Account hacked and Stolen Riot won't help

28.05.2018 my main account is hacked, (Greatness). I get disconnected at 4-5pm with an error saying, "your account is being logged in from elsewhere blah blah disconnected" I try changing my password but its too late the hacker had already changed it. I tried using my email account to try and change my password but that to was too late, it had been changed. My only option now was to contact Riot Support.

Riot sends absolute useless questions such as I quote.." First 5 champions purchased????? First 3150lp champion purchased??? First 4800 lp champion purchased?? First 6300 LP champion purchased?? Did you receive gifts on this account? These pointless STUPID questions which cannot even be answered because i made the account years ago and cannot remember are HOLDING ME BACK from getting my account returned to me! SO NOW some stupid hacker has my account and is demoting me!. I answered all of the relevant questions and wrote invalid to all the ones that had no relevance. Example: They asked questions about my paypal. I don't even use PayPal! I keep getting generic answers back saying this and i quote. "Now I know this can be frustrating, so please contact us again if you remember any more information about the account. As a small tip, you can always double check the information you've already provided, maybe you've missed something. Also, it would be great if you could reply as well to the questions you've left unanswered."

They do not answer the questions I put forward in the return emails.

They even requested my IP address. I gave them it. It would be so simple for them to look at my IP address, notice that it has been the same IP address that has been used for the previous 1000 games. Compare it to the IP address that is being used now and would see a difference.

As if the above wasn't enough. I gave them the details of my card used for transactions for Riot Points. Which they requested. THEY RESPONDED WITH THIS : Mighty Ted (Riot Games Player Support) May 29, 5:39 AM PDT Hello, When it comes to Account Recoveries we target specific information, I am afraid the one provided by you is not enough or only proves that you had access to the account and not that you created it. Therefore, I cannot provide you with information regarding the state of the account.

" is not enough or ONLY PROVES THAT YOU HAD ACCESS TO THE ACCOUNT" WELL DURRR ITS MY ACCOUNT!!!!

I am tired of the level of incompetence Riot Support gives. There is no number to call. There is no live support system. They just ignore emails and not don't respond to the questions I put forth and there is nothing more I can do.

I was a dedicated player and supporter of Riot. Buying skins and investing.

I want my account back and I want this hacker Gone!

Greatness.

Account security is your responsibility. You're asking them to fix a mistake you made. I'm sure they'd like to help, but under no circumstance will they ever transfer ownership of an account without being absolutely sure that they're giving it back to it's rightful owner.

Yes, all those questions are difficult to answer, but that's exactly the point behind them. They're not expecting that you get every question right, but you should answer those questions as best as you can and definitely not answer "invalid" because you think that question doesn't matter.

How is it my responsibility? What more could I do to have the account protected?

I'm asking them to give my account back which has been taken from me. It's not a mistake? Someone hacks your account with all of the necessary safety requirements is a flaw in the systems safety requirements obviously. It's their job to fix mistakes.

Difficult to answer. I bet if you had a multiple year old accounts that you wouldn't remember the first 6300 lp champion you bought. 4800 lp champ you bought or the 3200lp champion you bought. Therefore invalid questions.

Asking 3/8 questions relating to paypal is INVALID if I never used paypal on the account. How else should i word the answer to the question.

I gave them Ip address and card details. Which both match mine and they won't give my account back on the basis of not knowing the first champions i bought 6 years ago?????

There are three possible ways somebody stole your passwords. (Probably more, but these are the major ones)

  1. Your passwords was weak and somebody brute forced it.
  2. Somebody gained access to your computer, eg via a keylogger, and managed to read your password.
  3. Riot's database got compromised and Riot actually saved your passwords. (Which they most likely don't do)

The first two are without doubt your fault, the third one definitely didn't happen. Strong passwords and safe browsing patterns with regular virus checks do wonders to protect your info.

I've been playing since season 1 and still know my first 6300 was Syndra. But as I said, they're not expecting you to get every question right. They want you to give them something they can use to validate that you're the owner. Even giving them a selection of possible champions is better than nothing.

Asking 3/8 questions relating to paypal is INVALID if I never used paypal on the account. How else should i word the answer to the question.

Answer that you've never used paypal. Simple as that.

I have had the account for years since i began League. Never had any trouble. They needed to know my username and password which is crazy. My password needs to be written in so how does a keylogger just find it? IMO more likely the 3rd possibility rather than the first two.

How is it a valid questions if i must guess it? Seems like possibly the worst possible set of questions. Why not just give secruity quetions like other sites. "First girlfriends name..Mothers maiden name" Phone number?

Invalid and never used paypal seems similar to me. Invalid in the sense it is with my case. Its invalid because I don't have it on my account i use card for RP which i told them!

ClumsyFerret1 votes

Again, not invalid just inapplicable. Invalid would indicate that NOBODY could use that to their advantage. Inapplicable means it can't be applied to YOU in particular.

As for the reasons why your account got "hacked" Johurgurt is missing the most glaring/obvious reason: shared passwords. Think back to Twitter, Under Armour, Equifax, Uber, etc... SOO many data leaks in the past few years. If any of those passwords are shared, then they're exposed. Keep different passwords. I can garuntee you that the Riot servers were not hacked and you did not lose your password that way. You need to make sure your passwords are secure, not Riot, not your mom or dad, not anyone else. You. Change passwords every so often, even if you have to keep them written down somewhere.

You know if Riot just made a two-password authenticator all of that would be unnecessary. Many many games use it for a reason. Why is Riot, this large company that has millions, not invested in decent security? Their support system is an absolute waste of time.

DrCyanide1 votes

First off, use the Reply or Quote feature if you want people to be notified when you respond to them.

Secondly, the vast majority of instances where someone's League account gets "hacked" are instances where they used the same password for multiple websites/accounts, and a data breach in one of those other sites results in people getting access.

Third, Paypal questions would be better answered as "Not Applicable" rather than "Invalid". The question isn't invalid, it could help someone who has a Paypal, it just doesn't apply to you since you don't have Paypal.

Forth, from what I've been told you don't need to be super exact on things. You could say "I think my first champion was either Teemo or Annie (got both of them super early)", and make similar guesses on your other champions. Again, these aren't invalid questions, they're ones you just don't recall.

Riot asks all the questions they do to try and make sure you're not using them to steal an account from someone else. A new roommate would have the same IP address and potential access to your card numbers, while not knowing what champions you bought when you started out. Yes, it'd be better if they had 2-factor Authentication, and one can hope that the Clash authentication leads to that, but for now it's what they've got.

Greatn3ss1 votes

Sorry, didn't notice first time posting.

I understand will answer it better next time.

That seems so stupid to me. How can you just guess your way through the questions would make me seem more suspicious IMO.

I didn't think of that. But THEY KNOW for a fact that my ip address is the same as the last 1000 games. The hacker is using a different IP address! How is that not proof right there.. How is the card details matching not enough alongside all of the questions i answered which were valid to my account! Eg. Where are you from. Location of buying and purchasing.

Riot doesn't even respond to my questions in the emails i send. They reply with a generic response that they repeat over the 10 or so emails. Its beyond frustrating how such a large company can be so horrible on the support. No live support What is that all about... No phone call option???

DrCyanide1 votes

People go on trips or move. A change in IP addresses doesn't inherently mean an account is stolen.

At certain times of the day there's a live chat option with support, I've seen people post copies of that chat here. I can only speculate that a lack of a phone number is to help manage the volume of repeat requests.

Greatn3ss1 votes

If the ip address is the same as the previous hundreds and hundreds of games I played and then suddenly has a random IP address since the time i stated was hacked. YOU can be pretty Bloody sure I am teh owner of the account!

Never seen the option, where can i find it?

When I was much younger, I fell for one of those Phishing sites that could get you ingame currency free of charge. I was actually able to log into one of my other accounts and confront the hacker. I'll never forget "Thanks for the account BB xxoxo" Then he disappeared >.< I tried to fix all my passwords and it was too late, he had all of them, including the one to my email. I wish I coulda seen his face a week later when I ended up calling yahoo themselves and as long as you remember your security questions for your email, you can recover all of it. My lesson learned that week was to stop making all my passwords the same thing >.< [zombie-brand-facepalm]

Greatn3ss1 votes

Yeah, what a prick. Sorry for it happening to you mate.

I have a whole bunch of passwords that I use.

Yeah its a solid lesson learnt not using the same password for everything.

I had my account taken for one game, immediately contacted support, and was asked similar questions. My account is older than dirt, and i dont remember most of the things, yet i was able to confirm i was the owner of said account.

If your account is 9+ years old, they dont expect you to remember everything, just enough.

Greatn3ss1 votes

I answer the majority of the questions. How were you able to confirm you were the owner of the account in the end??

Pika Fox2 votes

Knew enough and was upfront about the age of my account (idk when it was created but i know the timeframe champion wise) and up front with what i didnt know for sure. I also know my first champion i played as, and know i ended up afking that game because it was a high skillcap champ against other level 30s and my friend said id just be more useful ulting from base after i died so many times.

Also of note i never lost access to my account; someone played 1 game and spent all my IP, so i wanted to get that refunded and remove any infractions on my account if they raged or w/e, as well as see what steps i needed to take to restore security.

Greatn3ss1 votes

You knew the Time frame champion wise? what does that mean?

Yea, I have been up front as well about the silly questions i don't remember answers too.

I know the first champion i bought for 6300lp that was all.

Ah so slightly different. APpreciate the help nonetheless

Did you have the account email verification thing set up? I wish league had a digital authentication thing like WoW that you can but for 10 bucks that is required for all log ins..

Greatn3ss1 votes

Not 100% sure what you are talking about. Explain it again please. Account verification set up? My account is old but i never got a pop up before saying anything about that.

Yes. I think the reason is because why doesnt anyone have any motive to hack another account. Being a silver talented played then hacking a diamonds means you are going to get stomped every game till you are back in silver. I agree though. Riots support and safety system is leagues behind any company that is decent.

Ztoka1 votes

When you go into account settings, there is an option for account email verification. If you try to log into your account from an unknown ip, you are sent an email w/ a code that you must enter to access your account. I tried to do it now from work and the computer isn't recognized so they sent a code to my email I had to enter to verify. Basically 2 step authentication.. I would think most folks would have enabled it since they used to offer a free ip/xp boost for enabling it to try adding an extra layer of security to the account.

Guessing they stole the account to a: clean out any rp you had b: sell it on an auction site. apparently folks buy accounts all the time. Imo, that is dumb because like you said, if you are silver and get a diamond act, you are gonna get stomped and drop quickly. Then again, most bronze/silver feel they belong in diamond/master etc and it is just their team holding them back. Not their 5cs/min and negative kda..

I never saw the option.

My brother has had contact with the hacker on my account and he got told my account was sold to him on a Chinese website called 5173.com.

I have literal screenshots of the msgs of him stating he bought my account illegally and that He is clearly not the creator of the account. Yet Riot still won't even respond to the msg's I have written and spoken of about this. They are so utterly useless.

Ztoka1 votes

Wow, that sold fast.. Sorry to hear things aren't worked out yet. If you sent that info to riot, the account will be perma banned sooner than later. Prolly had a ton of skins on the account too. Cases like this make me worried to spend rp. Lvling another account is np.. It's all those darn skins you have invested in that make this more lame.. Hope they somehow figure it out for u :/

Greatn3ss1 votes

Are there any other steps I can take in order to retrieve my account? Riot literally ignores all my questions and answers. I have tangible proof and they turn a blind eye and choose to not respond.

Surely there is another option rather than this one toilet hole of "support".
