[MODES] ARAM should give you option of keeping previous hero if someone dodges

Not sure where to post suggestions for game modes where Riot will read/consider them, and this really should be considered a bug, so posting this here.

I can't tell you the number of times I've played ARAM when I've FINALLY gotten my favorite hero (tonight, Sona) and someone dodges. Next game, I don't get the hero I want. Or even close. Then next game, I get an awesome hero AGAIN (whoohoo!). Tonight, Sivir. And someone dodges. AGAIN. Then (again)I get a super awful ARAM hero.

So I use my reroll. Get another awful hero. Reroll again. Another awful hero. So now I've used both of my rerolls only to play a hero I don't want, when I had, without using any rerolls, already gotten TWO of my favorite ARAM heroes -- only to have it ruined by dodgers. It makes me consider dodging myself, because this really sucks.

It feels like 80% of the time I get one of my favorite ARAM heroes, someone dodges, and ruins it for me.

THIS HAS AN EASY FIX. When someone dodges, all other players who didn't dodge get the option of keeping the hero they had in the previous game OR rerolling (for free, once). For the 4 players who didn't dodge, this is only fair, right? They get what the would have had anyway.

For the player who dodged, there should be a penalty: they should be given the same hero they had when they dodge and NOT have the ability to reroll, even if they have rerolls.

RIOT THIS NEEDS FIXING. I can't tell you how frustrating it is -- and how much it makes me want to stop playing ARAM when this happens.

What should happen is that the dodger gets stuck with the champion they had until they play a game with it. That would solve the problem instantly.

This was submitted through the feedback channel. The response I was given by support was that they are unable to pass reports directly to the developers and that this should be posted on the forums. That seems a bit counterproductive for feedback, but whatever. Hopefully someone who can discuss this with the dev team sees this. I would have posted on the Howling Abyss forum, but there hasn't been any Riot activity there since November.

Queue dodging is a problem in all game types. Sometimes it's justifiable (RL emergency, completely intolerable champion selection chat experience, accidental misqueue), but often it's just selfishness (someone didn't get his preferred champ/role). Having an increasing delay between dodges is extremely useful, and does the job pretty well in most cases.

However...

ARAM is a special case. The game mode revolves around a random selection of champs. You have even included a game function that allows people to earn and store up to 2 rerolls. In other words, one of the key features of ARAM is the possibility of getting stuck with a champion you don't want or don't know how to use effectively. Dodging defeats the purpose of the randomized selection, since it almost completely circumvents the common* occurrence where you are given the "wrong" champ. Not only that, but it potentially upsets people who have gotten lucky enough to get a champ they like... just before being thrown back into the queue. Furthermore, it wastes people's time and makes them wait longer to get into the game.

* Since it is so common, it's also common to be requeued constantly due to dodgers. As evidence, here are three threads from the first page of the Howling Abyss forum complaining about dodgers:

This is my suggestion for how to mitigate queue dodging in ARAM (in addition to the standard time penalty):

  1. If a player dodges, save the currently selected champion and automatically choose that champion for the next time the account queues into ARAM.
  2. Reset the account's ARAM Rerolls to 0, with 0/250 Progress.
  3. Disable the ability to trade a dodge-locked champion to someone else on the team so that people can't trade, re-dodge, and then trade again for a better pick.
  4. If two accounts with the same champion dodge-locked are queued, don't place them in the same game. This potentially increases the queue time, although realistically it probably won't due to the pool of players.
  5. If an account has a dodge-locked champion, don't let it queue into a premade group. This will prevent people from building a team intentionally by dodging until each of their accounts has the desired champ, then playing a game as a premade group.
  6. Once a game has been completed with a dodge-locked champion, the account can continue using ARAM normally.
  7. Remove the dodge-lock every week when the free champion rotation occurs so that someone doesn't end up with a champion locked that is unavailable.

Steps 1-3 prevent people from abusing the dodge as a makeshift reroll, and losing their progress to legitimate rerolls will encourage them to stay in game.

Any thoughts from Rioters and other players are welcome.

I posted this over a year ago. Step 7 could be removed completely if the entire roster is made available for the mode.
