Blank screen during champion select after spectating friends

I was spectating my friends game, hoping to join their game afterwards. After their game, we get in queue and when the champion select begins, i just have an empty screen on my client except the chat box is still there. I was unable to ban someone and got kicked. Some of my other friends have had this happen too.
