Something weird happened to me aswell, I was top lane vs a Camille and she somehow got blue wards at lvl 4 and was able to use them...
I've seen this happen before. It was a Sion, but he seemed just as confused as everyone else. Not sure what caused it since I was buying when he got through the gate. Perhaps it's something with the gate not loading immediately on the map? Kind of like how characters models don't load in right away?
