Punished for accepting an invite?

So maybe this situation has never happened to me before and I didn't know how to approach it. I was in champion select for a normal draft game, and I got an invitation to play from a player I just played with. I didn't know I could be invited after I was already in champ select. so out of curiosity I selected accept. Well that's when the fun started. everyone got kicked out of champ select and I was the only person left, and then I slowly watched the opponent's ban timer tick down until it finally hit 0 and kicked me and then I got a dodge penalty. Is this supposed to work like this?
