First Wave Minion Bug [Gameplay] [6.8] (with video!)

Someoneelse4··19 votes·1,977 views

The first wave of minions used to spread their damage evenly (as per 5.24) but since the 6.8 patch they almost exclusively focus the first minion to lane. Usually the focused minion dies within ~5s of the lane crashing for the bot or top lanes leaving a much smaller window to leash the jungler without loosing xp. I suspect this could be intentional but I didn't see anything about it in the patch notes so I'd like a rioter to confirm.

UPDATE

Looks like the bug was fixed! Not sure if it was in response to this post or not, but thanks Riot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8OhSifJ0so

There was a change several patches ago to minion agro in the first wave. It was to make the lane not push in a random direction without interaction. i.e., if nobody attacks any minions they should stay roughly in the centre. Presumably this is a consequence of that change.

It sounds like you're describing the "First Minion Wave Equality" changes in 5.24

We made some behavioral changes to minions in the very first wave of the game when no enemy champions have interacted with them. Left to their own devices, the minions will spread damage evenly and avoid randomly focus-firing a single soldier. The goal here is that you should be able to more predictably realize whether or not you’ll lose a minion when you get to lane late. This actually went out in 5.23, but we figured you’d like to know!

FIRE EVERYTHING Minions won’t gang up on a single enemy minion when no enemy champions are present.

It explicitly says minions will NOT focus a single enemy minion and there haven't been any published changes to minions since they got rid of minion blocking in 6.4. Pre-6.8 minions would spread damage evenly, allowing the side lanes to leash to their jungler without loosing cs. Now if you give your jungler a strong leash, you're likely to loose the first cs or even loose xp if you leash red or blue.

It seems their goal in patch 5.24 was to help us "predictably realize whether or not you’ll lose a minion when you get to lane late" but now players are heavily punished if they leash their jungler too hard.

Try doing it but stay somewhere out of experience range, it might be that due to a champion 'being present' it allows normal aggro

It does it regardless of range https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SiVTDV3Qa0

Believed they changed it so when no player is in lane the minions attack randomly to keep the wave equally pushing, but when a player is in lane they'll focus a single minion?

I replied to BloodyTompon's post regarding this, for the sake of brevity I won't repost

I have also noticed this in ranked lately, it really sucks being on red side and the other team getting level 2 first
