thresh autos

thresh's auto attacks are considered ranged all the way up until patch 5.22 until then he was able to purchase and use runaans hurricane. now thresh is unable to purchase runaans but is able to buy either of the hydras normally i would not care but with this change i find it odd that thresh is not able to execute minions with relic shield as to buy either hydra you must be a melee champion. so now i find myself wondering if thresh is melee or ranged as both of these things contradict.
