Xerath Q not responding right after casting W

As part of a combo, after casting Xerath's W I then try and activate his Q afterwards. However at times the cast range for the minimum range of his Q shows up but doesn't charge up at all. There's no sound and it just sits there for as long as I hold Q. It won't cast properly unless I recast.
