Challenging Smite Didn't Grant An Assist

I'm pretty sure this is a bug: I was jungling Nautilus on blue side and had built the cinderhulk enchantment on the red jungle item that grants Challenging Smite. I was chasing Zed up top lane who had <150hp and cast Challenging Smite on him right before ally Draven ult came and killed him. The smite didn't grant me an assist, even though there was about 1 second from my cast to his death, and the animation clearly went off, and smite went on cooldown. Pls rito fix ty.

challenging smite doesn't damage the target by itself (unless you hit him), the damage reduction is to you only, and applies no CC . I'm guessing it just really doesn't count as an assist because of those reasons. It does give vision of the target, but then again ashe's E and (AFAIK) blue trinket / claryvoiance don't give assists either, so I guess this is "intended"
