Malzahar ult not suppressing right away

I've been playing malzahar a lot recently, and I have noticed that sometimes his ultimate (nether grasp) does not suppress right away. I get that there might be a cast time for his ultimate, but quite often I find that the animation is there, I can see the beam, it does one tick of damage, but then I am stunned or interrupted in some way by my opponent and it is canceled. It is as if it does not actually suppress until one tick in to the channel. Is this intentional? the tooltip does not say that it is delayed.

One thing to consider... "Nether Grasp's suppression can be removed byitem 3140 Quicksilver Sash, Alistar Alistar's Unbreakable Will, Gangplank Gangplank's Remove Scurvy and Olaf Olaf's Ragnarok," as well as if you are interrupted since it is a channeled suppression. http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Malzahar/Strategy

If unrelated... Which map do you notice this on? Or N/A? It almost sounds to me like the enemy, such as alistar or poppy, charge at you right before you ult, and they finish their spells interrupting your sustain. Is this the case, or no? Because, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think his sustain cancels spells. I'm not completely sure about that though. Reminds me of how sad I was when I realized Amumu's ult was just a bind, not a stun ): I found this out when ulting on kat's ult... didn't do what I expected haha.

that's why you, E,W,Q then R = KO, and your Q will silence them last letting u Ult FREELY

Update: After reading a fair bit, it seems this is a very common occurrence against renektons as well, although this would be OK if it does not interrupt an already cast ability, as renecton's stun is a move that attacks twice quickly then stuns right? so it's all one move that goes for a certain duration upon the next auto attack... But it happens way too often it seems for it to be just that people are constantly ulting just as renekton 'w's
