Getting forced out of Normal Draft Pick and getting the abandoned queue timer

Time: 11:05-11:10am CDT During the Pick Phase of champ select, the enemy team First picked Jax. During our team's first pick, the chat room stated everyone but myself had left the room. The timer still counted down on our first pick, then the game exited, and shut me out of League of Legends. When i logged back in, i had to wait 5 minutes for abandoning a queue.

Just happened to me. I'm not sure why there's more publicity on this- This is seriously messed up. I feel like someone found a way to work the queue to sorta grief people into wait times. Could be wrong though. And would like some more insight on whatdafuq is going on.
