Windows 8 PVP.net kernel crashes

Did a forum search and unsurprisingly, its a known issue. Since setting the program to run in "compatibility mode" I can now log on, but it gets stuck trying to download something. Its now saying I have a 2400 mb download that has to go through. Not sure whats going on here, but Windows 8 is a steaming pile of crap.
