Draven axes interacting with Base Gates

The linked video describes the interaction with base gates and Draven axes.
When Draven throws his spinning axe near a base gate or tries to guide an axe through the basegate the axe can disappear. I believe the axe will only disappear when it is supposed to land in the base gate area.
