Cannot go past champion select

For about 2 weeks now, I have been unable to connect normally to the game. Before that I have never had any problem with LoL. So now after champ select I get an immediate crash to desktop with bugsplat. Hitting the reconnect button ends up the same way. I found a workaround but it is very tedious since I need to do it every time I connect to the client.

  1. Create a custom game vs 1 bot
  2. After champ select, crash to desktop, send error report
  3. Quit and restart the client
  4. If there is no message saying something like "we restored lol to a previous patch", repeat step 2 and 3, else go to 5
  5. Log into lol client, CTD (since the game automatically tries to reconnect you)
  6. Reboot PC
  7. Log into lol client, wait for custom game to be over (a few minutes)
  8. Now I can play normally.

So basically I need to start a custom game so that bugsplat happens which makes the client go back to a previous patch. Then when the custom game is over I can play as usual. For some reason I also need to reboot my laptop.

I also noticed something weird, right after champ select and just before CTD, the League of Legends logo that appears in the middle of the screen suddenly goes to the bottom left part and gets bigger. This looks like a change of resolution. My laptop is an Alienware 13R3 with a 2560x1440 native resolution but I prefer to set lol resolution to 1920x1080.

My guess is that the latest patch (7.10 ?) changed some configuration files which makes the game crash the first time I connect into a game.

Of course I made sure that my graphical drivers (Nvidia) are up to date, that I have Microsoft .NET 3.5, and that there is no problem with DirectX. As I already stated, I had absolutely zero problem playing lol before.
