Game didn't load

I was in champion select, and as it finished and the game started to load the client seemed to freeze. I waited for a couple of minutes in the prepare yourself the match is about to start screen, and then figured something went wrong so I should restart the client. When I logged back in it said I had dodged the queue and blocked me from queuing again. This has never happened to me before, is this a common problem? If so what should I do in the future, just sit with the apparently frozen screen until it loads?
