Viktor not evolving talent in aram

I just played an ARAM game as Viktor on a smurf account. Before I had leveled any abilities I purchased one hex core upgrade, following which I put one point into each ability and evolved the laser. The ability showed that it had evolved, however never had the explosion following the laser (neither the animation or damage).
