Kicked me out of game to accept the demacia icon?

Idk if this is really a bug or even if this was intentional but yesterday I was around 20 min into a game and suddenly my ping went up really high. This happens sometimes where my ping will jump to around 600 and then come back down after around 15-30 seconds or so, so I decided to recall and buy some items cause I needed to anyway. It returned to normal after around 20 seconds and I started walking down mid but then my ping spiked up to around 2,000 and I disconnected. I use the legacy client so it went to the screen saying there were problems with connection and the reconnect button, but before I could press it, the gift message with the chest popped up and inside was the demacia icon. Around 2-3 hours earlier I went on the league website to unlock the new icon. I wasnt really that mad because we were already failing before I DC'd but im just confused???
