Lag in champion select lobby

Recently started playing league again after some time off. For some reason my game lags so much in champion select, its nearly impossible to select a champion and quite often I select the wrong champion because of unresponsiveness in the lobby. This seems to be a new problem, does the game now require more RAM than it used to in champion selection?
