Why do you can you only get 1 chest per champion per season

I was wondering why do you only get 1 chest per champion played because as a level 23 I only have few champions and I can't unlock chests anymore, which also mean I can't get essence for my champion masteries. It seems pretty weird to me as you don't get at all rewarded for playing champions you like/main by the Hextech crafting. Does this also mean that I HAVE to pay for chests? Or is there any other way for me to get chests without playing champions I don't like / don't play? Thank you for your time

If you get into a premade and you have lets say shaco (which does not have an S) and someone in your premade earns an S on shaco you will earn a chest for that champ (but will not be able to earn another s on shaco till s7)
