Tahm Kench devour possible glitch?

Its seems that sometimes when I try to use devour on an ally champ it simply doesnt work untill i try it again a few more times. It seems to work more often if the champion is further away though. Its kind of annoying in teamfights when you need to do stuff quickly and cant make mistakes but its not a giant problem. It always works on enemy champs so its fine there.
