Mordekaiser ult's status effect is being given to his target before they are morde's ghost

When I cast a morde ult on someone and they kill me, Children of the Grave shows up as a status effect dealt to me by my killer. Shouldn't the status effect become active when they are my ghost, not while they are still alive??
