It's happened two times in a row for me now so I'm sure that it wasn't a fluke, but when finally opening a chest after earning my chests and key shards I've gotten a champion shard. Both times it's been a champion I've already owned. It doesn't bother me at this point because I need to disenchant them anyway for the shards, but is this really supposed to keep happening?
It happens if you get unlucky. If you don't own all champs consider re-rolling them for a random champ when you get three of them that you don't want/need.
(If you do own all champs re-rolling after a new champ is released will auto-give that champ.)
What is in each box is completely random. Its still new and RIOT is trying to figure out things. If you hold on to the champ shards you can reroll 3 to get a random champion you don't own gaurenteed.
