[FIX] If you're having periodic screen freezes, try this!

Hey guys! A while back I was suffering from extremely annoying screen freezes, specifically on starting teamfights and regardless of graphics settings. Because they were anywhere between 0.2-0.5 seconds long, it took me some time to figure out it was a performance, and not a lag issue. I couldn't find any way to fix it for some time since all my hardware was sufficient (oh how wrong I was) and support couldn't help me either. At the same time I was playing WoW and had been having serious issues with advanced combat logging, a feature that writes every single combat event to a text file. It was killing my fps to about 2 (from 40) in raids. I suspected the same happened in League, leading me to conclude it was a HDD issue after eliminating every other possibility. Upgrading to an SSD (a new HDD would have solved the problem too, I suppose) ultimately resolved my 2-month issue.

TLDR: my HDD was defective. This can happen to any HDD. If you're experiencing screen freeze issues, be sure to check your HDD healthiness with a third-party tool. It might very well be the solution if you're also suffering:

  • Longer-than-reasonable load times when playing video from your HDD (very noticeable)
  • Mystery performance issues regardless of graphics settings or thread priority
  • Excessive performance loss with logging features (e.g. WoW advanced combat logging)

While it isn't Riot's responsibility to accomodate for hard drive issues, it might be a good idea to include this suggestion in some form or another in their standard troubleshooting list. Here's to hoping I help some people solve their issues :)

Thought you might have saved me from this issue that I've been suffering from for months. Turns out my SSD and 2tb are both rated "good" according to the CrystalFreeInfo app. Thanks anyways.
