Can't change registered phone number in client

In general settings in the client I go to remove an old phone number I DO NOT have anymore, however, in order to remove the old number, you have to submit a confirmation code FROM the old number to change it. What? is this a bug or something? where can I go to just flat out REMOVE this number so i can add the NEW one I have?
