Chogath Void buff after death

Not sure if its intended to work this way or not, but with void (4) buff active, my chogath ulted, but died before the ult did damage, and it caused the ult to do normal magic damage instead of true damage. happened multiple times throughout the game , just curious if this is intended behavior or not.
