Unit disappeared from board after a fight

I had upgraded a Mordekaiser to level 3, then won a match versus someone. After the match, Mordekaiser and the two items he had on were no longer on the board. At the beginning of the next match, he wasn't there and a random unit from the bench was placed in a different slot on the board.
