Item permanently disabled from hextech

I had an extra unit from carousel on the board because my bench was full, the round started and my varus items got disabled from hextech, mid round i sold something from bench and my varus got benched mid round while his items were still disabled and it stayed like that for the rest of the game. I couldn't add any item to his current (disabled) items to combine it. tried selling him and the item just disappeared . In conclusion, item get's perma disabled if you sell a unit while being overloaded and having 6/5 unit from carousel , thous making one of your units going to bench mid fight and that unit had been hexteched .
