Client Beta Update #3: Closer to Completion

Hello good people and also Yasuo mains,

Recently we've been talking about why we have to replace League's legacy client. We've got a number of highfalutin technical explanations, but it boils down to this: The sooner everyone's using the updated client, the sooner we can start delivering cool new client features.

Last month, we introduced our plan for replacing the legacy client. We've just completed Phase 1 of the plan and begun Phase 2, starting in Oceania. Below is an updated look at the plan.

The Legacy Client Replacement Plan

NOW COMPLETE: Phase 1 - A small group of randomly-selected players from Oceania, Russia, Brazil, and the Latin America servers were automatically upgraded to the new client, although they still had the ability to launch the legacy client from the login screen. No big problems were encountered during this phase.

MONDAY, APRIL 10 IN OCEANIA: Phase 2 - All players in Oceania were automatically upgraded to the updated client, with the legacy client turned off. We've begun Phase 2 in some shards in China and Garena regions as well.

Phase 3 - Assuming Phase 2 goes well, more regions will be automatically upgraded to the updated client, and the legacy client will be retired. This will happen automatically when players launch League without requiring the download of additional files (beyond that of the regular patch for that week). Soon after Phase 3, we'll replace the legacy client with the updated client on all publicly-hosted game download pages.

Phase 4 - We'll automatically remove legacy client files from your machine to free up space.

Note: This gradual rollout will give us time to monitor player feedback and make adjustments in response. We'll alter these plans or delay the rollout if we find that more significant changes are necessary.

SO WHAT'S NEXT?

That's a good question, imaginary caps-lock person. After each phase, we'll evaluate how the updated client is doing compared to the legacy client. If it's performing at least as well or better than the legacy client, we'll move forward to the next phase. If we see serious problems (like widespread bugs preventing players from getting into games) we'll slow down the client rollout process to address the issue. Removing the legacy client is the most crucial part of this process, and we want to be extra careful about it.

Assuming Phase 2 goes well, the next step is to officially end the client beta in all other regions, enacting Phase 3 and upgrading all clients in all regions. If you've opted into the client beta—as over 90 percent of players worldwide have already done—this process won't affect you beyond removing the "Launch Legacy Client" button from the new client's login screen.

Got questions? We'll stick around in the comments.

I have a question, when will the new client integrate build pages? I miss the days of not having to type into the search bar the items I want to build.Nautilus

Will our classic and ARAM ranks (games won, cs score..) be implemented, as well? I always liked seeing how many classics or ARAMs I have won in total!

The new client is still so slow though, to the point where I almost get kicked in champ select because the client freezes when I try to change my summoner spells... and no I don't play on a toaster

For the love of the gods, have you made the mastery/rune pages into tabs like on the legacy client, or do we have to suffer through drop menus? Drop menus are probably the least efficient way to navigate.

Thought of this quote, as I went to hit my very last "Log Out" button on this old client.

You can't seriously be thinking of releasing this to the public... There are still so many problems with it, so many bugs and performance issues. You assume anyone who reports the client being slow and unresponsive have low-end computers. I have a very high-end PC and run into all of these issues. Your "upgraded" client is nowhere close to being ready for release. You still haven't even made champion purchasing possible on the champion page. Please, for all of your fans, spend at least the rest of 2017 making your client actually usable. League of Legends is the most played game in the world by far, so the fact that your client is still so shitty after more than a year of it being in beta is honestly pathetic.

As a dev myself, when I first downloaded this game a few years ago and noticed that it was using fad languages like Adobe Air, and pando media booster and stuff I was totally confused... why wasn't the whole thing just written in C# or C++? I'm glad to see it's being put into a framework that's a bit more timeless :).

But I thought Riot was going to wait until more issues were resolved before forcibly rolling out the new client. I'm using it for the most part (because of how damned beautiful it is), but it is super buggy sometimes.

I would have hoped the dev teams would have done the following things at least before forcing us into the new client:

  1. Reduce game start glitches and bugs. I still get lots of issues with it not showing the champions when it should, though I've only dropped from probably 2 load screens, that's still 2 load screens too many imo. Nobody would call mine a 'low spec' computer, so I didn't even put a second thought to changing to low spec mode when I saw the option... perhaps you should think about putting a different label on it ("Simple Graphics" for example).

  2. Re-Create the item sets section. I use them constantly, and this is the main reason I switch back to the old client sometimes... I did see in another post that there are some 3rd party sites that help make them via the API. Might be a good enough work-around for now but I really wish it would be integrated into the client again.

  3. Please, for the love of god-fist, fix the store. The store should never 'time out' it's been like that for literally years, but it's worse in the new client. I have to actually close and restart the client to get the store to come up most of the time now. Same with the loot section. I have to reboot to get into it sometimes.

  4. Oh man, you have to do something about those notices going in front of the store/loot button and not having a close on them. I'm talking about those little pop-up messages that say that a summoner dodged or something that go over your loot and store buttons on the home page. If you are planning on keeping them there, I need to be able to close them faster so I can get into the store and loot buttons. They are very annoying.

What will happen to those with low spec pc that cant run the new client without game breaking lag? the legacy client did a great job to make sure that the client could be run smoothly on almost any computer Jhin

When will my shop be back? For PAX, Lunar Revel, Snowdown, what?

Is there any word on whether the 'advanced' stats will be available at some point in the new client? The one where it shows your wins/losses with filters for individual champs? It also tracks your pentakills and total damage taken, etc?

It's still available on the legacy client, but I haven't seen it anywhere in the new client.

yo fix it when i select a game mode I don't accidentally click and pannel over to twisted treeline because my cursor was close to it but not on it by mistake

Fourthfifth4/14/2017, 7:35:15 PM2 votes

Why do item sets even matter? Do people not notice the recommended builds page in the in-game shop? Besides shouldn't you be itemizing for the game as it plays out not just a static build every game...
