Spyglass3 votesYeah, all said and done, IP chests get you 12 cores - enough for the PROJECT skin shard you get, or two cores (one RP chest) from finishing two of the first-strike borders. Basically, the only thing with no strings attached is the random PROJECT skin and the random skin shard you get from the free augment cache.
If you're already spending RP, it's actually a really clever way to get you to spend just a bit more to get a second project skin for that Border you can almost afford, or to grab a couple chests to get a border for that skin you just got.
Aeszarck7 votesNo, because the Augment Caches are excellent value. 295 RP for two pieces of loot, a chance for an Augment Cache, and two PROJECT Cores. Compare that to a Hextech Chest and Key, which are worth 250 RP and have one piece of loot in them and a chance for Essence or a Gemstone. Augment Caches are worth far more, and if you bought the bundles that they were in, you got even more out of them.

GloopMaster2 votesHextech Chests only give one piece of (random) loot with a potential bonus gemstone though; Augment Caches give one guarenteed skin shard and one piece of random loot, as well as 2 project cores and a chance at a gemstone or augment cache fragment.
100 more RP for the guarenteed skin shard alone is worth it; let alone the chance for the augment cache fragment to get even more bonus loot.

Spyglass1 votesYou can't re-roll it (since you'd need 3 of them, and the shards from the PROJECT event are different from normal shards), but Riot promises that we'll be able to disenchant all the extraneous PROJECT loot to clear our inventory out later.

Aeszarck1 votesYou can only craft one thing if you don't plan on paying, either one PROJECT border+icon or the random PROJECT skin. If you want to craft more, then you need to purchase Augment Caches.
