Chromas, Yorick and Champ Mastery in Ask Riot

Riot··13 votes·142,192 views

Welcome to Ask Riot.

This is a space where we focus on your questions and give you answers.

This week we will be looking at Chromas, Yorick, and Champion Mastery on ARAM and TT. We reviewed over 9,000!!! (specifically 9,743 we’re not just memeing) questions in dozens of languages last week and picked three topics that were important to you. A full quarter of the questions asked had to do with skins, Yorick was the most asked about champion, and a lot of you wanted to know what the hell is going on with Champion Mastery.

Have a question (or two) yourself? Go to ask.leagueoflegends.com and sign into your League account. Read the Do’s and Don’ts and then ask us something. We’ll be adding a repository of the answers to the web once we’ve accumulated a few of them.

We’re committed to reading every question but can’t guarantee we’ll answer every one. Why not?

Some questions will be answered elsewhere or won’t be right for this space. (We won’t be launching new products here or taking away from existing conversations.) Even if your question isn’t the one being answered, we’re listening and we’ll be sharing with the Rioters who are working directly on the things you’re curious about.

Why haven’t there been any new Chromas lately?

We believe Chromas are a great way for you to celebrate your passion for a skin and the alternate fantasy it represents. There’s a lot of potential for Chromas and our first offering of them didn’t meet that potential. We also listened to your feedback about the variety of chromas available, pricing, and having to get them in packs of three. We want to improve on all of these areas for the next version.

Until we can deliver on that experience, we’re not releasing any more until we’ve figured these things out and we’re actively working on this solution. – SuperCakes

Is Yorick ever going to get his rework or should we bury this champ forever?

The short answer to this is, YES, Yorick will be getting a full rework! No need to bury him, the Yorick rework is actually in full production right now with a pretty large team digging away at him.

To give you more context, the way Champion Update works now is that once a champion goes into full production there is a very small chance that it will be ‘iceboxed’ (or delayed for a long period of time). Early ideation on Yorick actually started in the second half of 2015. We have a team called a “Core Pod” that starts ideation on a champion very early. This is comprised of a designer, a narrative writer, concept artists, and the product manager. Together, we try to put together a new design, visual concept & narrative for the champion. We’ll share this development with stakeholders periodically to keep them updated and gather feedback on the work. Typically, there are several of these happening at once.

This is the point in production where it is very possible for a champion to get iceboxed if we can’t come up with something solid. That’s why we don’t really talk about champions at this stage very often. Once we have the design, art & narrative approved, we are greenlit to go into full production, and at that point we add it to the Champion Update Schedule. For example, Warwick was recently greenlit but won’t actually start full production until after Ryze.

Another question I have heard is, “Why was Ryze put ahead of Yorick? Why are you delaying Yorick more?” The answer to that is, the Champion update team now has 2 separate rework teams and Yorick went into production after Poppy finished. The team that worked on Taric is working on the Ryze update, so while Ryze recently popped up on the champion update schedule it actually hasn't affected Yorick's timeline. However, Yorick’s rework is on a much larger scale due to him being a “Minionmancer” and the additional models that need to be created which make them take longer than your traditional characters. Things can and do change, but I would expect to see him some time after Ryze, but some time before Preseason, if things go well.

Yorick's update has many similarities to Taric's update in that he has a 100% new kit but will occupy the same role as he does now. Yorick is still a toplane Juggernaut with a focus on summoning minions, though his kit has been heavily modernized. I hope you are excited to see the new Yorick as we are to show him to you! – Reav3

If or when is there going to be implementation of the champion mastery system to ARAM or TTL?

We are close to delivering mastery for ARAM and TT to players, but don't have a release date locked down yet and will be sharing some additional details in the coming weeks.

Player grades in champion mastery are determined by looking at your performance stats at the end of a game vs. the global averages for your champion and position. ARAM and TT are very different from SR, so a special set of rules had to be developed to measure and rate player performance in those modes. This took us some time to develop, which is why it hasn’t been added to those modes, while champ mastery was added for each rotating game mode as it was released.

As some of you have pointed out, mastery level 1 to 5 are as much about continued play on a champ as they are about skill mastery, great play just accelerates gains. Mastery level 6 and 7 have a higher competitive bar as far as performance requirements. Alternate game modes are intended to offer variety in play with a less competitive standard for players. We want to maintain mastery levels 6 and 7 as achievements specific to high performance in competition, so they will only be achievable in SR modes. - Riot Socrates

Let me get this straight - I can get a Level 7 Mastery for spamming Shaco on URF, but I can't even get a Level 1 Mastery for mastering a champion on Twisted Treeline or playing them over and over again on ARAM?

You can come up with a Champion Mastery grading system for half a dozen Featured Game Modes, but still haven't managed to come up with one for 2/3rds of your Permanent features?

That's completely backwards! Scrap mastery from Rotating Game Modes completely and double down on getting ARAM and Twisted Treeline Mastery! I don't care how much I played Shaco in URF, I'm not magically better with him now because URF was on Summoners Rift!

Forbidden Siren36 votes

I got Cassiopeia to level 6 JUST for playing URF alone on one weekend. So yeah, I'm scratching my head a bit after I read their contradictory explanation.

Boy Patrol3 votes

How? Lvl 6 masteries weren't out during URF weekened.

Neale6920 votes

The last one, yes it was. It was just last week or the week before.

Destructificator27 votes

[zombie-nunu-bummed] all of the champion mastery i have is from playing URF as i find only urf to be fun, and aram isn't too horribly slow. it's really pathetic when it's been over a year and aram still doesn't have mastery. it's just vanity. it's not like the world will end if people have mastery from something else than the dull and boring summoner's rift.

Nocturnal Heart7 votes

yep, was level 5 with shaco before urf, level 7 after a day of urf xD

Adding onto this,

Mastery level 6 and 7 have a higher competitive bar as far as performance requirements. Alternate game modes are intended to offer variety in play with a less competitive standard for players. We want to maintain mastery levels 6 and 7 as achievements specific to high performance in competition, so they will only be achievable in SR modes.

what about ranked Treeline? Is Riot seriously saying that normal blind SRs have a "higher competitive bar" than ranked 3s?

it makes me sad since I worked really hard to get my mmr in 3's had a game with Meteos a while back it was fun

TurquoiseYoshi20 votes

It gets better: You can get Level 5 mastery from playing Poro King, but you can't get Level 1 from playing ARAM. Even though they are almost exactly the same mode.

DarkRitual71 votes

"ARAM and TT are very different from SR, so a special set of rules had to be developed to measure and rate player performance in those modes." But random game modes with insanely different rules got mastery implemented in them when they released? If you can't figure out how to assign mastery properly in game modes with more known variables, how could it have been ready for all the random modes in RGM?

Forbidden Siren37 votes

Yeah, I feel like they kinda contradicted themselves there. I still don't understand how Poro King and Hexakill: TT gets a mastery system first before the regular game mode of ARAM and regular TT.

Kürama27 votes

I'm sorry but limiting ARAM and TT to Mastery 5 is bullshit.

frafdo1213336 votes

I disagree, half the time I run TT people are afk and run ghost heal like they're level 2. Not to mention games are a lot shorter so they might not show real skill rather than a lucky play 10 minutes in

Kürama14 votes

Those are bots. If you played against real people it'll be almost like SR. Game being shorter has nothing to do with skill.

I'm really looking forward to a Mordekaiser visual (and possible audio) update to put him in line with many of the other champs in League, a.k.a., no triangle feet (or breaking the 4th wall). Based on the info here, I can't imagine any date on something like that, but is it something that may be considered/in the works?

Thanks in advance!

RiotReav331 votes

Mordekaiser is on our list to get a full Visual & Gameplay update one day, probably the size of Taric/Sion. We feel like the Death Knight Thematic is very strong and we aren't delivering on it very well right now. We aren't actively working on it right now though, but he is definitely on our list!

Since 6.11 now marks a full season of no balance updates for TT will riot announce they are overhauling it or removing it at the end of season 6 it harbors things such as team sellers, reward sellers, scripters, etc.

In the current way TT is I don't see it ever being balanced as it always recieves balance updates from SR which are not meant to be on TT since you have less champions these numbers are not always the greatest for the map.

In 6.9 riot did a change to jungle experience [jungle monsters no longer share experience based on range only experience to killer] killing a meta that 3v3 had called support meta where it was 2 top ADC+Support and 1 AP bot.

When season 6 started 3v3 MMR was also changed so it was fairly easy to place diamond I if you have high MMR from last season you would place it 5-0 while the teams that were placed could only place a max of Silver I (This was highly likely a bug but riot doesn't put resources into 3v3)

RiotReav39 votes

Sorry, but I am on the ChampUp team, can't really answer any TT questions.

Kade Stormvale4 votes

I'm scared, will Mord keep his pet dragon?

DarkRitual1 votes

Not likely. It doesn't even feel right anymore with the elemental dragons. Morde just gets a generic dragon pet instead.

Wesleys Theory10 votes

um? I mean, there's a clear difference in each elemental's ghost version's attacks. If anything, since the elemental dragons, Morgekaiser's pet dragons fit far better.

Menstruating3 votes

What about Evelynn

RiotReav318 votes

Yup! She's on the list as well. I would say she is higher priority then Morde, though not sure when we will get to her.

Ultîma6 votes

Is there any plan to increase the momentum of Champion reworks?

There's a lot of characters that need attention, and few releases per year. At this rate we won't even get to see a dozen reworks by the time League is 10 years old.

RiotReav38 votes

I think you will find that we have been increasing the momentum by quite a bit. The time between Poppy and Taric was much shorter then previous VGU's. We have Ryze and Yorick in the pipeline right now as well. Even if we only got those 4 out this year that would be way more big VGU's then we have ever released in one year.

Toa of Death1 votes

and Cho'Gath? is he on that list.

RiotReav36 votes

He is, yes

Brutusness1 votes

{quoted}

He is, yes

So if we get about 4 full reworks this year? Can we expect an even greater number next year?

RiotReav35 votes

Not even sure if 4 will be the number this year. Could be more could be less. Different champions take different amounts of time. Yorick being a "Minionmancer" for example has a higher scope then most champions. Some champions like Gangplank or Ryze took less resources since we didn't feel as much needed to change.

The point I'm making is attaching a number is hard since it's unclear how long/short different projects will take, just saying that we have a bigger team now and are trying to increase the cadence of our big VGUs.

Brutusness1 votes

So I was wondering if you could answer something that I haven't been able to get a clear response to, Reav, and to me you're one of the best Rioters when it comes to responding. If Swain isn't planned to get a VU for a long time, say, until 2018, then he should be up for a skin, yes? But I also see some Rioters saying they'd rather wait until he's gotten a VU, because they say his rig is too old. Then which is it? Does this mean Swain's going to have to wait a long time for any kind of skin, even after we've waited four years since his last one? It seems like if a champion is in such a need of a VU that they can't get a new skin at all, that they'd be high on the list of champions soon to get a VU. Even Mordekaiser, a champion with one of the oldest models in the game, and who is apparently on the list of champs looking to get a VU, got a 750 RP skin last year that is honestly pretty cool. Couldn't Swain get something like that, one that wouldn't be too much of a hassle to change come his far-off VU, but would still come soon enough that Swain mains won't have to wait even more years for something?

RiotReav31 votes

Sorry, Brutusness, wish I could give you a better answer. I can't really speak for the skins team though. I know that they tend to avoid champions that are high on our list for big updates though. It's not a trivial amount of work for Champion Update to remake the skins from scratch.

What I can say is that Swain is pretty high on our list to get to. I wouldn't expect him this year but there's a high chance we could get to him sometime next year.

Can you give an idea of who is on the high priority list for next year? So far I've heard Evelynn Galio Swain

RiotReav327 votes

Sure, not sure who will get to on this list but champions that are high for us right now are.

Galio Swain Urgot Chogath Irelia Evelynn Mordekaiser Pantheon Rammus DrMundo Nunu Akali

We obviously won't get to all of these next year, and there will probably be others that get added to the list overtime. There are probably others I'm not thinking about right now as well. But since u asked I through some up.

Is the Yordle-unification process still ongoing?

Just curious to know if Teemo , Corki , Veigar , Kennen , Rumble will still get some love in regards to a visual update someday soon? Tristana, Poppy and Heimer were all made much more popular since their reworks and would be nice to see how the other Yordles will fair as well.

RiotReav35 votes

On day we will most likely get to those. I can see Corki and Kennen making it onto the full VGU list in the next couple of years. Overtime champions that look good now start to look more and more dated, so it's hard to say who will be on the list 3-4 years from now.

Photos of Ghosts4 votes

Teemo is a potato. Actually, he looks dumb enough to be defined a popato instead.

GreenLore4 votes

My thought on those:

Galio I think he should definetly become a warden(though mage could be his secondary role) as his whole lore basically is about how he is supposed to shield others.I'd also hope that his ability to turn into stone will be kept in some way since its just so fitting for a gargoyle.

Swain The mage update helped to nail the "strategist"-theme a bit better(and the warlock theme was already fitting before),but his W still feels really clunky(and like a much worse version of Sorakas E).I really hope he'd get his update next year mainly because I think a vampire swain skin is something that has to be made for a halloween skin eventually.

Urgot yeah the poor guy still didn't get one,I kinda feel pity that he has to be in such a bad state for so long

Chogath I feel like cho'gath isn't terrible right now,but he has so much potential that he just doesn't use.Though I hope he doesn't get turned into a mindless killer machine, maybe something more like smaug(at least once he is big enough),in that he is brutal and evil, but still intelligent.

Irelia Again I think she doesn't use her full potential I mean she is this champ with levitating blades but her kit barely uses that.(also her character feels kinda bland).

Evelynn I think she is one of the champs in the game whose general theme is one of the weakest,I mean she is pretty much just an "evil sexy woman",which isn't really anything special, especially since we already have another evil redhead from the shadowisles with elise. Her kit also feels all over the place with lots of abilities that fit a fighter(or even tank) much better.

Mordekaiser would love to see an update, since the last one kinda failed and in terms of visuals he is one of the last champs who still have pizza feet. Though I think his character and lore are already pretty solid thanks to his updated story.

Pantheon Similar to morde he is one of the few champs with oversized feet. And a VGU could do wonders for him in terms of character since his new lore barely gives us any information about his personality.

Rammus While I think he isn't that bad in terms of visuals or gameplay he isn't really great either as his gameplay is kinda monotone.

DrMundo could really need an update. His kit feels rather boring and I think his personality has the potential to be very interesting(his kinda goofy character creates a nice contrast to his brutal and sadistic personality, which could be explored)

Nunu He is honestly my least favorite character right now, largely because not only his character is rather uninteresting, but also because his kit seems to be kinda all over the place and is rather unimpressive.

Akali I think thematically she is one of the weakest characters in the game(together with Evelynn).I mean her big theme is that she is a kunoichi, which basically means that the only thing that sets her apart from the other ninjas is the fact that she is a woman(at least kennen has the honor of being THE electro champ of the game). And storywise she feels like she is simply Shens sidekick(though kennen suffers from the same problem)

King Shane13 votes

I think that chromas are interesting but not worth paying for. In the end, you're essentially the same champ with a different color. I think that if chromas were part of the hextech crafting, then that would be cool. or maybe once you reach mastery 5 or higher on a champion you can get chromas as a reward for dedicating so much time on a champion.

"This is the point in production where it is very possible for a champion to get iceboxed if we can’t come up with something solid."

I am super excited to see a much needed updated Yorick But there is a chance of his rework being scrapped D= but why? I'm sure riot can come up with something, they can't just scrap Yorick He is the biggest pun in league of legends, I hope that is being considered in his rework as well D=

RiotReav314 votes

What I was saying in the post is that Yorick is far past that point. I was saying that we have other champions that we haven't talked about yet that are at that point. Once we add a champion to the update schedule and start talking about them there is a pretty small chance of them getting iceboxed. It is always possible though as we would never release something we didn't think was high quality, it is just very unlikely. So far I don't think any champions that have been added officially to the champion update schedule have been iceboxed.

Wind Whistler2 votes

Oh god, this is a big relief. I thought Yorick was going to get Sion'd. Thank you for realizing Yorick's identity and who he is, and wanting to keep it that way.

RiotReav319 votes

Yeah, we feel Yorick is similar to old Taric, in that his fantasy and role match up, he just needs to be heavily modernized. Sion acting like a AoE Mage and Poppy acting like a Assassin we felt were thematically mismatched.

I still build Sion AoE Mage :^) I am happy about these clarification reports though!
