State of Champion Update

Hey guys,

We thought it would be a good time to do a deep dive into the Champion Update Team. Similar to the “State of the Season” Devblog that Meddler puts out, we wanted to try doing a “State of Champion Update.”

We currently have four small teams on Champion Updates: two focused on the large scale reworks, one focused on our big class updates, and a small team of illustrators (in house and outsourcing partners) that are going through and updating old outdated splash art. I’ll be going over our future projects for all four teams and talk about what the goals for the projects were, as well as reflecting on the goals of our recently released projects. For the sake of clarity we can call them Team A, Team B, the Roster Team, and the Splash Team (though writing this makes me realize that we need to come up with cooler names for the teams).

Roster Team - Class Update Team

Recent Project: Mage Class Update

Our goals with the mage update were similar to previous class updates. We wanted to take a group of low mobility mages and give them all distinct gameplay from each other. We also wanted to give them the tools to survive in a new world of LoL where mobility was King. After the results of previous projects, we also put a stronger emphasis on cohesion. This means we wanted to make sure the changes felt thematic to the character.

Currently we're seeing increased or similar playrate on most of the “big six.” A lot of the mages are perceived as being more viable and distinct after the update as well. These are all big wins but we also don’t think the mages had as big of an impact as previous roster projects. Vel’koz in particular we don’t think we pushed enough. After some recent changes he is back to a similar playrate and is a bit more strategically distinct (that true damage), but all in all we think we could have pushed him further than we did. We also think we should have done less mages in retrospect but pushed the ones we did push further. Malzahar could have used even more work on the game health side and Brand would have been even cooler if we could have fully reworked his Ultimate.

Current Project: Assassin Class Update

Our goals for the Assassin update are to give each Assassin a unique gameplay role, put the entire class in a healthier place, and give Assassins more ways to help their team. We also believe that Assassins really embody the “Skill fantasy” in our game. We want Assassins to have greater outplay potential but also be able to be outplayed. By making them less reliable we can also make their success cases stronger.

One of the big difference with Assassins is that we think we went too safe on the mage changes. We want to really push these characters thematics/play patterns. We found that the projects we put the most time/resources into ended up our most successful projects. With Assassins, we aren't taking the approach of “What one thing can we do to improve this champion?” but rather “What would we have to do to make this Champion complete?” This means we'd have to take on fewer projects, but that each project would have a bigger impact. We still want to do small changes to most of the Assassin class, but we want the main projects to be larger in scope. We're excited to see how this new strategy pans out!

Splash Update Team

The splash update team is a pretty small group of illustrators that is primarily focused on updating our old skin splash art as well and creating new splash art for our big VGU’s. (We even did a cool new Malzahar splash for the Mage update!) The most recent projects have been the Nidalee, Tristana, Trundle, and Sion skin splash updates you’ve seen recently. Not much to say here except that we feel these have been super successful and the player response has been outstanding—who doesn’t like awesome splash art? We are currently very close to finishing Fiora’s skin splash update and also have begun early work on updated skin splashes for Twitch.

Team A - Large Rework Team

Recent Project: Ryze

Our goals on Ryze were to update Ryze’s art/lore to modern standards, give Ryze healthier gameplay, and also give Ryze a unique strategic identity that wasn’t just “do a bunch of damage.” We also wanted to make sure he still felt like a “combo mage.”

Overall we feel we did a pretty good job on hitting our goals with Ryze and that he's in the best place he’s been in a long time. New and old players alike are enjoying the Ryze rework, and we feel we have better levers in place to balance Ryze in the future. We also feel that the team teleport really put him in a unique place among or cast. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy watching the abundance of Ryze Teleport videos on social media? Could this be the final rework for Ryze? We sure as hell hope so!

Current Project: Warwick

Shortly after Ryze wrapped up, Team A jumped onto the much anticipated Warwick Rework. So what are our goals with the Warwick update? Currently Warwick is very beginner friendly. We actually want to embrace that and push it even further than it is now. We want Warwick's gameplay to actually teach new junglers how to be an effective jungler. Right now Warwick can’t gank until level 6, but what if Warwick's kit actually encouraged players to gank often and early? We also have heard loud and clear that player think Warwick’s kit is kind of boring and outdated. While we don’t want to raise Warwick’s skill floor, we do want to increase his skill ceiling a bit and add more depth to his gameplay. We also want to bring Warwick's art and thematics up to modern Riot standards by giving him a proper place in our world. We think violence is an important theme for Warwick and we want to see how far we can push that thematic.

Team B - Large Rework Team

Current Project: Yorick

Let’s talk about Yorick! Yorick just hit PBE and should be raising undead armies against hapless players all over the world, but let’s talk about what the goals of the project were. Once we got the team together on Yorick, we started to break down what we thought was absolutely important for him. We read tons of player feedback and had countless meetings. At the end of all that, the three things we thought were the core of Yorick were that he summons Ghouls, that he is a beefy juggernaut with a shovel, and that he is kind of the “good guy” of the Shadow Isles (or as good as a Shadow Isles character can be). We feel pretty confident that we hit our goals, and we can’t wait for you guys to get your hands on him so you can let us know how you feel.

Next Project: Galio

I’m happy to announce that after looking into a few projects, we finally got a solid direction on the next project that Team B will roll onto after Yorick. It's the champion people love to forget, Galio! Currently Galio has a lot of problems. His theme, gameplay, and art hasn’t aged very well at all. This gives us a pretty wide canvas to paint on and Galio will likely be our largest transformation to date. So what are our goals with Galio? With Galio we want to see if we can really deliver on a mid lane focused tank/mage , as we think that opens up a lot of interesting strategies (not that he has to be played exclusively mid of course). We also think that him being some sort of statue/construct is super important as well as his strong ties to Demacia. DEMACIAAAAAAAA! (Had to get that out of my system.)

Final Thoughts

So that’s what Champion Update has been up to and where we are headed in the future. Would love to hear where you guys thought we did or didn’t hit our goals, as well as what you think about our goals on future projects.

I think it would be cool if Galio interacted with towers in some sense. Have him interact with structures, buff/debuff, rebuild, gold from tower kills, control a tower, fly to towers, temporary change to have towers heal allies, or even had an ability where the tower shoots him and empowers the laser eye beams and he has a countdown timer before if hurts him. While a rock champ is not new the main ones tend to have more elemental Taliyah Malphite interaction with rocks. Galio just feels like he should be the one guy that is a guardian and you don't want to meet him on his turf. And from his lore he is made to protect others and hes all sad that he failed so hes got great abilities and wait...does he flap his wings and make you go faster? A stone creature can make a tornado thing? Why not try towers. He is artificial life brought to stone. The towers are not so different in the lore are they?

Well this was fun. Thanks for reading and I look forward to his rework.

I noticed there's no mention of Urgot anywhere in this list. I recall Urgot being listed as fairly high priority for rework/update quite a few times over the past year or two, and thought I remembered seeing him on the upcoming list not long after Poppy. I'm curious as to what this means for him, and whether he's being pushed back due to other champs being seen as higher priority, if there's difficulty coming up with a new kit and design, or if they've just thrown in the towel and decided to keep him as is.

While it's great you're working on champs that need a rework (Yorick), but what about Nunu? I think he's due for a rework considering all of the changes happening. His mechanics is completely outdated and an ult that you could pull off once in a blue moon.

Great blogpost, thank you. I think as a whole, the entire company would benefit more by releasing more dev blogs from more teams. This is great communication, thanks.

I love that you guys have such detailed plans for the future, and thats awesome.

But I think you guys need to take a minute and look at your past projects. A lot of them were supbar as you've admitted. When will you take a look at those champions? Karma, Morde, Shen etc.... when will these guys get some proper love? They were honestly better before your team touched them.... and these guys are the reason people are hesitant to trust you with their mains.

I know you guys are booked solid, and thats cool I understand. But you should really find some time to fix the champions you've frankly made worse.... the players deserve updates which improve the game and their favourite champions... and you should honestly feel obligated to fix your mistakes.

I know there are higher priority champions on your list (urgot galio eve etc), but what scares me is that you wont look at champions you've already dealt with for years, even though they "missed the mark". I dont wanna play a half baked Shen or Morde for another 5 years.... I honestly want to play a thematically cohesive and fun champion. Dont you think the players deserve that? Or is that too much to ask for?

Another thing we discussed earlier was dealing with champions with healthy gameplay kits, but severely outdated graphics/textures (talking MS Paint lvl stuff here). For example Orianna is desperate for a fresh new look. How many more years do you think it will take for these champions to get a makeover? Is she gonna go for another 5 years without any love ? There are other old champions that need to be overhauled visually. You need to find some time for them eh?

Finally, why did you decide to release two easy to play / simple champions back to back? (IE, yorick and ww). I know a lot of people will love these characters, but honestly I've played League so much that simple/ boring / monotonous playstyles dont appeal to me AT ALL. I know many players will love the new Yorick, but frankly he was way too boring for me to play. Now you're saying that the next project (ie warwick) will be similar in difficulty?

Note that so far, in my opinion, you're net improvements are negative. IE, your team has done more harm than good so far.

When I started playing League I gravitated towards the simplest champions: Shen, Warwick and GP. In my honest opinion, Shen and GP missed their marks and are not really fun to play anymore for me. I cant even stand to look at Shen (you know my reasons), and I dislike GP's barrel mechanics a lot. Please, please do not fuck up warwick. That would make you personally responsible for wrecking 3 of my favourite champions.

I will hold judgement till I see what you guys do with the assassins, but frankly you need to step yo game up.

Cheers, and have a great day!

PS: Some of your projects were really good. Taric, Sion, and Poppy are good examples of successful updates that added to the champion's thematic and strategic niches... These were net positives that didnt take anything AWAY from these champs but instead ADDED VALUE to them. The other ones .... not so much.

Dont take this the wrong way, I still eagerly await the next update. (Minus Yorick, he literally put me to sleep when I played him on PBE).

TLDR: Fix your mistakes before working on new champions. Find time to visually update old champs with healthy gameplay (Cho, Orianna etc)

Where does Evelynn stand on your rework priority list?

Galio update?

I-I'm so happy that you're updating one of my favorite mid laners...! Currently, I think that his W is outdated and awkward to use; I'd rather be focused on my damage than my shield when my jungler comes to rank my lane.

While his Q is very slow, I think that the amount of damage it can cause correctly rewards nice predictions of enemy movement. His E also has very nice speed control, and is very versatile. In short, he kind of reminds me of Orianna; in fact currently they're really alike. Galio just seems to be a weaker of her.

His ultimate is great for team play, and I find it difficult to use Galio to his potential in normals because people rarely follow up on my CC from my ultimate. Also, Galio is supposed to be a tank, but I find myself usually getting obliterated by Le Blanc or Fizz, even if I build straight magic resist. I hope you can make him more tank AND mage-like, and more fitting in the current state of the game! [slayer-jinx-wink]

Rofl these guys think they did good with the Ryze rework when they don't realize he's still at 40% winrate or so

Wordofmask8/31/2016, 6:17:13 PM7 votes

what about Swain? will he planned for rework next year?

Mishli8/31/2016, 8:37:06 PM5 votes

overall did enjoy the mage update and really looking forward to the potential of the assassin update, couple questions though:

  1. I don't see Ekko or Zed listed anywhere, i know ekko "still needs tuning" and heard the both of them were slated for some tweaks during the update. is that no longer a thing? or are they just not listed as they aren't a 'primary' focus for the update?

  2. don't get me wrong, i Yoric's new ultimate is cool, i'm just genuinely surprised. when i heard an update was coming, the only 2 things i expected to stick around was 'he uses ghouls' and his ultimate. I always thought it was interesting and unique, kind of like a reverse morde ult (you ult your adc to get more damage and potentially 'save' them (cough give them a chance for revenge cough)) and am really surprised. what made you get rid of it?

also, just to throw my 2 cents in as a long time ekko player. I would love to see him still stay as an assassin style champ, but i feel the way he currently is almost requires a tank build of some sort (roa/rylais, etc) just to let him survive long enough to do anything, unless you literally have precognition, or can constantly rewind time (i know ekko can, but us mere mortals can't) it's impossible to get off most of his kit without just getting lucky as 9 times out of 10 you can't survive long enough to actually pull off any cool plays.

"Warwick’s kit is kind of boring and outdated. While we don’t want to raise Warwick’s skill floor, we do want to increase his skill ceiling a bit and add more depth to his gameplay."

So... does this mean that with the new update, Warwick will have many ways to outplay the enemy and have some other things to do outside of his ultimate/when his ult is on CD?
