Riot Pls: Dev priorities and the League client

Riot··13 votes·86,356 views

Riot Pls is our ongoing effort to share our vision for League of Legends and to keep players in the loop as to what’s going on back at Riot HQ. To see what we’ve discussed so far, check out Riot Pls #1 (the sandbox one) and Riot Pls #2 (the solo queue one).

ScuttleChris and New001 – leads on League of Legends – here again to talk a bit about what’s coming next for League and where Riot’s development teams are pointed. Let’s get straight into it:

The League client update alpha and its impact on development

The League client update is officially in live alpha. We’re looking forward to finally delivering on one of the longest-coming and most-requested features in League’s history, but we still have a long way to go. Our highest priority right now is getting the updated League client into a fully-functioning release, at which point we can switch all players over to it from the legacy client.

While it may seem like we’re just doing house renovations (and if we’re good, that’s what it’ll feel like), the League client update is a deceptively large and complex project. Beyond the visual and architectural replacements (which would make it just a Very Big Project), we’re also rethinking how we build and develop features as a company. Organizational structure can be a boring topic, but consider this: The legacy client was built in a small room by a small team in 2008, and its architecture was fine for a company of ~50. At the time, we had no idea how League would grow and over the years we’ve found we just can’t work as quickly or independently as we want. Things were (are) getting successively harder to add and maintain.

We’re evolving portions of our dev organization at the same time we deliver the League client update - all with the expectation that it will be ready, on day one, for everyone to jump onboard. Everything we’ve added to the client over the last seven years has to be rebuilt and ready in the updated client, both on the player side and on the backend Riot side. It’s two large undertakings: the tech work, which you’ll see in the form of a new client that’s more responsive and reliable, and the organizational work, where we can build future features (or games), faster.

This priority also comes with a few behind-the-scenes shifts: In order to get the updated League client out the door, we need to stop adding features to the current client. More specifically, if the feature you want to access is tied to the client (so... all of them), chances are high the team who owns that feature is transitioning from making new things to porting their old ones into the updated client. This means fewer new things until the full launch of the updated client (and some time afterward as teams spin back up). Every feature we add to the legacy client is something we need to remake for the updated client; focusing development on porting features instead of creating them will help get the update to you sooner.

Here’s a quick breakdown of priorities as they stand today:

  • Matchmaking team: One of the few core development teams (that is, a team focused on developing new League features) not focused on porting features. They’re committed to resolving issues with high-ELO matchmaking, match quality, queue times, and solo player recognition (check out our latest post here).
  • Content/Balance teams: Work as usual. Balance, champions, and skins will continue on. These teams have always focused on the live League experience, and we don’t gain much by putting concepts artists and champ designers on this project.
  • League support teams: Most teams who are more focused on supporting the game and community vs. developing new features (i.e. esports, network improvements, anti-cheating, player behavior) are still doing their thing.
  • All other core development teams: League client update.

We’re still committed to improving League by building new features, including a few long-awaited additions. However, most of these will be built or launched after we’ve made the full switch to the updated client. This isn’t what we consider a perfect scenario (compared to, “Hey, we made X new thing and it’s live right now, surprise!”), but we believe the long-term importance of the new client outweighs the short-term gain of shipping a feature we’d just have to rebuild in a few months.

The League client update alpha is also an experiment in transparency. By opening the alpha (and it is an alpha, to be clear) to thousands of testers, we’re hoping to share our thought processes, development progress, and the hurdles we face as we push closer to launch, all while collecting feedback we can use to improve the updated client as a whole. Pls pardon our dust. And please, sign up to test the client and give us your feedback. The updated client will launch stronger (and faster) with your help.

He doesn't want people to think he's a hipster so he's super lowkey about his vaping habit. But if you saw his collection you'd be hella jelly: his most prized pen has four built-in heat settings and the battery is mad fresh like 100 full heat cycles between recharges.

Graves don't play

A pen? No, he has to use a mod.. probably one with at least as much power behind it as his firearm.

Holy crap.. I just realized what his Smoke Screen is O_O.

So here's a question I have: Why is everyone so irritated Soloqueue is gone now? like, my roommates up at Gold and I actually rather LIKE Dynamic Queue better, or am I missing something? Is it just whining and moaning that Riot removed something, and people are acting like, for the first time ever, Rito's going to go back on something they've done because people whine enough about it?

Why do peoplelike Solo Queue better than Dynamic Queue? there's nothing better about SQ

  1. 5 single players vs a 3,4, or 5-man premade leaves the 5 solo players at a huge disadvantage. The premade is coming into the game with knowledge of their teammates, playstyle, champ pool, stuff like that and can build around it to make a more effective team comp and such. On top of that, the premade will have more cooperation, coordination, and often times a voice chat set up so that they can relay information quicker, more precisely, and without the risk of getting attacked while typing.

  2. Premades make it much easier to boost your friends thus drastically unbalancing ranks and matchmaking. For instance, my brother and his friends boosted somebody who was fresh 30 and new from bronze 5 who had a 32% winrate in bronze to gold by playing as a 5 man group and carrying him.

  3. This is a personal gripe with Dynamic queue however I cant be the only person this happens to. When I end up on the same team as a 3 or 4 man premade, I am consistently forced to deal with being ignored or flat out screwed over by the premade. In Mid lane, especially when the premade has the same clan tag, the other team will notice if only one person does not have the same name as the rest of the group, I check for this every game as well so that we can take advantage of it, and leads to constant camping while the premade jungler only ganks for the premade. However it is much worse as a Jungler. I have had issues ranging from the premade refusing to leash for me to taking smite themselves and stealing my buffs at level 1 and 2 leaving me very far behind.

The primary reason people are complaining is because they think premades have an unfair advantage if they're on voice chat. And they probably do, although the advantage is slight.

IMHO the solution isn't to keep people from playing with their friends (aka trading Dynamic Queue for Solo Queue). It's to give solo players more communication tools so the advantage premades might have is minimized or eliminated.

That means we're sure as shit gonna have to make ship some new features

MaximumWifeSteal23 votes

Solo queue weeaboo walking in here, I have to disagree with this a bit. See, solo queing in dynamic queue is absolutely the pits, not just because of communication (although a built in Dota esque voice system could be cool) but because of friends. Don't get me wrong friends are cool too. But going from the same principle as the honor system, as said in its post, its easy to be nice to friends. Ergo honors from people on your friends list mean like nada. The same logic applies here, when you solo you usually end up with a team of four friends, (and thanks to the new system I congratulate you on) against a team of four friends and another solo. Now, I propose this. If that team of four carries, and play together all the time, they will do well. If the team of four on your side don't, they will not. And worst of all you end up in the middle of it. So they won't really listen to you and the enemy team just bulldozes your nexus. Anyone can work well with good friends. But if you don't have any, you have to rely on your own power and attempts to reach out to them to get anything done. The point is this: as the system stands, it enforces a "Bring friends or go home." sort of issue. I want to be able to play alone and not have to worry about their entire team deathbushing the whole map because no one will listen to me or ward, and their team is on point with it. When you play with people you know, VoIP isn't always necessary, because you know how the support thresh, for example, will always flay them into you and ult if he lands a hook. If I solo adc, I don't know anything about that thresh. And if I manage to climb and do well in spite of that, that should mean something. Now, I do respect the badge system for displaying this, and I appreciate the effort Riot puts out to its toxic players XD. I just wanted to bring another perspective as I continue to weep and mourn solo queue.

Are you considering an expanded ping / in-game communication system to allow players to communicate more concepts without having to type (or speak)?

For example, being able to quickly indicate "let's set up a trap here" / "let's gank here" / "assassin please flank from here", etc.?

LOL just no, Cactopus. People are not just complaining about the premades, they are complaining about how it is ruining the experience for them to climb in ranked and get better as a solo player. The advantage for premades is more than just "slight," it's ALOT. They also are complaining more and more as they hear the bullcrap reasons why you won't bring SoloQ back. Also, I don't want to hear your numbers about the majority of players "like" DQ and what not, as those numbers can be easily questioned in their clarity. The majority of players DO NOT LIKE dynamic queue and want it out of League.

EDIT: And all of you downvoting me should be ashamed of yourself.

LOL just no, Cactopus. People are not just complaining about the premades, they are complaining about how it is ruining the experience for them to climb in ranked and get better as a solo player.

Isnt that just complaining about the premades

RiotRiot Cactopus88 votes

RiotRiot Cactopus259 votes

No disrespect SnugglePuggle94, but like we're pretty much moving past the "most people don't like it" argument at this point. It's just not true—it's a small but vocal (and very passionate) minority that's super upset about dynamic queue. Lots of people always wanted the ability to play ranked with more than one friend, and lots of people are fine with DQ now. The upset vocal minority has some very legitimate complaints about dynamic queue, so we're gonna bust our asses to try to address those criticisms and make ranked better for everyone. That means new features, more communication tools, better matchmaking tuning, and on. That's where we're going now. Again, this isn't to say that we're ignoring the criticisms of dynamic queue. We hear you. And we're gonna get creative to make things better for all players.

Hold my hand SnugglePuggle94. Together we're gonna go on a magical journey

Talk about a prideful child. Solo wasn't amazingly better than DQ. I played Solo Q for 4 years. I think DQ is fine, Although I don't play with anybody during ranked, The "slight" advantage is not crazy high or anything. You can easily overcome it. And the emblems are more for players to see who had teammates boost them to higher elos or if those players climbed themselves, It is a step in the right direction, and they said its the first of many. I'm sorry that your Bronze 1 self has such a hard time. Git Gud.[slayer-jinx-wink]

SnugglePuggle9417 votes

Excuse me? Do not attack people using their rank. That's mean. Downvoted.

Again, emblems will let premades be able to see who is solo and therefore abuse them even more, making solo experience even worse. It's not a step in the right direction at all.

Brockinroll12 votes

I don't care about your rank. I've been there. But you're attacking riot without any info to back what you're saying that most players hate DQ, Most players don't hate DQ. And It is a step in the right direction, One reason a few people dislike the DQ is because people can Climb the ladder easier with playing in a premade, That being said, Giving players emblems. You will know what players earned their rank by climbing alone or climbed by being in a 5 man group. And no Emblems will not let players "know who is solo". Them emblem is factoring your past 25 games and how often you were grouped to not grouped. Just because a player has the solo emblem does not mean that player is alone every game. The emblem will not make your game turn into a gangbang on the solo players. And you do not fight premades that often. Don't say it happens 1/10 games or anything. Unless the player is around Diamond+ its a very rare occasion. Premades fight other premades 99% of the time. The main reason I brought up your rank is because it does not make sense that you;re so frustrated with Premades if you never fight them. I'm looking for a link to the article about premades fighting premades**couldn't find the main article but here, http://na.leagueoflegends.com/na/site/2016-season-update/ranked-improvements.html, at the start of the season was 95% and has gotten to around 98%. Riot is a good company, I agree DQ has its problems but your anger does not match what you play. DQ is better than Solo Q as a whole.

SnugglePuggle949 votes

I've found my info from all the boards posts. Most people I see hate DQ. On one hand Cactopus said on a thread last week that in the survey results "most people enjoy DQ" but I don't think the results have much clarity. To me I think most people who said they like it during the time of survey didn't see all the downsides when the premade factors started rolling in. It can be a number of things but DQ has been hated or disliked for the majority of posts I've seen.

I have been playing with lots of premades. Even today I've had some duos on my team, who played awful. But I've had many games where I've been stomped by fucking 3+ premades, and camped ridiculously hard by them.

And yes, the emblem will let premades see that a solo player is solo. They will attack that person harder because they know they are a solo player and can take advantage of it. Not all of them will do, but most premades have that intention. So yes, I have the frustration of premades in my rank. I fucking lost my s5 promos to them.

And no, DQ is not better at all. I climbed better in SQ. I was able to have more fun in SQ. Everything was better in SQ compared to this bullshit of a system.

Brockinroll6 votes

One of the sole reasons I don't use the boards anymore. It has become a circlejerk of people complaining about DQ. Check the subreddit for more information. https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/44cb2w/the_circlejerk_on_solo_queue_vs_dynamic_queue_is/. The boards isn't horrible , but it has just become a place for memes and people complaining. Everything you post in boards gets downvoted whether its a champion idea, Saying you accomplished something, or upvoted if you say something is broken.

SnugglePuggle949 votes

I know that. I'm constantly getting downvotes. But I won't let that stop me from saying what's on my mind.
