Bugfixes

We've been fixing these bugs over the course of Nexus Blitz's time on live. Now seems like a good time to recap!
FLAMMABLE MATERIALS Teams can no longer win Bardle Royale events by hopping in the Battle Sled and doing donuts in their fountain until the other team burns to death
HEAT EXHAUSTION Tanks with tons of regen can no longer outheal the burn from URF Deathmatch and Prize Fight, making those events take an eternity to complete
NO RUNNERS Sion, Nunu, and Kled can no longer leave the URF Deathmatch and Prize Fight rings
ACCESSORY Riders in the Battle Sled now properly get mission credit for enemy champion knockups
LOOKS WEIRD Rengar's health bar no longer bugs out if he dies during URF Deathmatch with gray health available
FLAT TIRE Rift Scuttlers no longer sometimes get stuck above the first rock in the Scuttle Race event
RED LINES Turret targeting lasers no longer sometimes get stuck on champions
OVERLY ULTRA RAPID FIRE Champions can no longer get more than 80% cooldown reduction in URF Deathmatch
WRONG NEXUS Killing an inhibitor during Sudden Death no longer lets you kill the enemy's actual nexus instead of their walking nexus

The Map

Nexus Blitz is played on a compact map with two lanes and a jungle. Teams are comprised of three laners and two junglers.

Duo jungling

Monster gold and experience are shared and increased when taken by multiple allies, and buff camps grant their boons to two players rather than one. This spirit of cooperation unlocks jungling for the entire roster as long as they've got a trustworthy partner. Jinx jungle? Try it with Braum!

Upper jungle

  • Invulnerable turrets (you can see 'em between Gromp and Murkwolves above)
  • Red buff
  • Wolves, Raptors, and Gromp
  • Rift Herald (Taking Rift Herald also grants your team the minion-boosting effects of Baron Buff!)

Lower jungle

  • Blue buff
  • Rift Scuttler patrols around Blue buff
  • A second Gromp

Top & bot lanes

  • Lanes! With turrets! Bot and top lane converge toward the base and share an inhibitor.

Events

Nexus Blitz's claim to fame is its event roulette. Every few minutes, one of several map-wide events kicks off with all ten players participating! You'll get to see the first event in champ select, and once you're in game, there'll be a 30-second warning before each event letting you know what mayhem is about to ensue.

The event lineup:

  • Bardle Royale: Both teams battle it out in an ever-shrinking circle of death until only one is left standing. Word of advice: don't recall once the event starts or you'll instantly burn to a crisp.
  • Bardle Royale (Juggernaut): It's Bardle Royale but one member of each team gets increased health and the On-Fire buff!
  • Bardle Royale (Paranoia): It's Bardle Royale but really, really dark. You won’t be able to see either enemies or allies until they’re right next to you! Everyone also gets flat penetration stats to make it the other kind of dark too (murder).
  • URF Deathmatch: Urf the Manatee blesses everyone with insane buffs, including massive cooldown reduction and removed mana and energy costs. Everyone gets three lives. Last team standing wins!
  • Loot Teemo: Chase a giant Teemo around the map and hit him to take his gold!
  • Loot Veigar: A more dangerous Loot Teemo. Dodge the Dark Matter and Event Horizons that Veigar casts around him!
  • Push the Cart: Stand near the cart to push it toward the enemy team's base and blow up the first building it touches. If the event goes too long, the cart gets impatient and decides the next person to touch it wins.
  • Push the Cart (Attack/Defend): A time-capped variant of Push the Cart. Only the attackers can push the cart and their objective is still to shove it into an enemy building. When time runs out, defenders claim the win by shoving all attackers off the cart.
  • Arena: Teams face off in a gauntlet of 1v1s and 2v2s. Strongest vs strongest, down to... less-strongest vs less-strongest. The team that wins the most prize fights takes the event!
  • King of the Hill: Stand on top of the hill until your team claims it. If you push the enemy off, you'll drain their progress before adding your own.
  • Scuttle Racing: An innocent race between two Rift Scuttlers turns nasty as both teams interfere. Use speed boosts and shields on your crab; CC and damage on the other team’s crab. If a crab dies faints, it recovers after a few seconds.
  • Sudden Death (Nexus Blitz): At 18 minutes, the Nexuses get impatient and walk toward the center of the map to fight it out. Win the game by destroying the enemy Nexus, but watch out—someone taught them how to cast abilities. Death timers are reduced during Nexus Blitz!

For Nexus Blitz vets, we've done some tuning to make events feel more fair. Most notably, events won't spawn right on top of turrets anymore! We've also made a bunch of UI improvements to better track who's winning on an event-by-event basis. Finally, the Snowball event has been removed, which is a little ironic since it's now Snowdown.

Rewards

Winning an event grants one of several wild rewards. Here's the prize wall:

  • Catapult of Champions: Click the giant cannon next to your fountain to launch yourself across the map!
  • Blessing of Blitzcrank: Gives your turrets and cannon minions Blitzcrank’s Rocket Grab.
  • Poro King: The Poro King arrives to aid your team, pushing through top lane! Fluffy helps you siege enemy turrets, breathes fire on baddies, and periodically heals nearby allies. Long live the King!
  • Battle Sled: The whole team can pile into this vehicle, with the first player to click acting as driver. Take a leisurely cruise around the map until you hit something and the sled explodes, damaging and knocking up nearby enemies.
  • Guardian Angel: Your team gets a temporary, one-time Guardian Angel.
  • Statikk Shock: Your team gains Statikk Shiv. Zap!
  • BF Shield: Your team gets big, friendly shields.
  • Mega Cloud Drake: Your team gets mega out-of-combat movement speed.
  • Mega Ocean Drake: Your team gets mega regen.

Those of you who played Nexus Blitz the first time around may notice some omissions. Cursed Minions, Blessing of Caitlyn, and Wrath of the Hunter (brush stealth) have been removed.

On-Fire

Racking up a killstreak lights you on fire, granting mana and energy regen, tons of damage, and shorter cooldowns, but increasing the damage you take and reducing shields and heals received. Being on fire also puts a sizable bounty on your head which the entire enemy team shares.

Items

Nexus Blitz features an armory of items from seasons past. If any of these icons stir up waves of nostalgia within you, hop into queue and relive the olden days.

Starting items have been retuned for the mode, including a new Doran's item for enchanter supports (the blue stick). Support items don't upgrade, there's no Spellthief's item, and there's only one jungle item (which upgrades Smite to Chilling Smite when you enchant it).

Finally, there's one item we developed specifically for Nexus Blitz:

Stat-Stick of Stoicism

B.F. Sword + Vampiric Scepter + Zeal + Needlessly Large Rod + Kindlegem + Aegis of the Legion + 1127 gold (7,777 gold total)

  • +250 health
  • +250 mana
  • +100% base health regen
  • +100% base mana regen
  • +30 armor
  • +30 magic resist
  • +120 ability power
  • +70 attack damage
  • +50% attack speed
  • +30% critical strike chance
  • +10% lifesteal
  • +10% movement speed
  • +20% cooldown reduction

Bans

New to our second test, champ select kicks off with a ban phase. Everyone gets one ban and bans champs at the same time!

Mode-Specific Balancing

Nexus Blitz features a bunch of mode-specific balance changes for champions and runes to accommodate the faster pace, smaller map, and frequent fighting. We'll have at least one follow-up balance update after the mode goes live.

"Mode specific balancing"

Cries in ARAM

Who else would prefer urf this snowdown... or just as a perma gamemode? This to me is a downgrade from last years snowdown.

Riot managed to take something that wasn't broken and break it.

Is URF gonna be available this christmas?

How did the gamemode go from "Fun and enjoyable with friends" to "The Most un-enjoyable toxic wasteland"? I loved when nexus blitz came out, it was fresh and fun. This patch it's when Me or someone else wants to play a champ that seems fun, we go against a super stacked 5 man running a perfect comp.

Some may say it's not like this every game, but it really is. People play the champs who can solo carry and dominate lane, regardless of fun, all 5 players spam emotes/taunts, screech in /all chat (even after muting they find another way to just make the game not fun and 1 game in; Nexus Blitz isn't fun anymore.

Even playing on a smurf, or main, nothing changes. This nexus blitz has problems with pacing, too. you can have a 15 kill lead, but nexus siege happens and that now 20 kill lead is nothing since 1 person made a wrong play. Bounties make comebacks way too easy.

Hope this never becomes a permanent in full opinion.

Next.

I've played a lot of this gamemode the first time it was around and I loved it, i've been waiting for it to come back ever since. But with all the new changes the gamemode doesn't feel nearly as fun as it once was. The more I play league and watch riot implement changes the less and less I enjoy this game as a whole.

Colorful Dream12/6/2018, 5:40:20 PM10 votes

So I played this mode twice to try out, and it's awful for me. I thought ARAMs were bad enough with not allowing fairness, but this mode has far too much damage. The games are decided within the first few kills. Which happen very early. I get it, it's Nexus Blitz, it's meant to be fast, but I didn't expect it to be as fast as it is. Then, once game is decided, the team that's ahead wins every event, yet it still takes another ten minutes for the game to end. I'm glad folks are having fun with it; it looked like fun from the outside; but it's 0% fun for me. I hope I'm in the minority.

Sterry12/7/2018, 12:22:48 AM9 votes

I am in loveeeeee with the changes you guys made from the first testing. A ton more fun then before! Great Work

Phryxia12/9/2018, 12:36:58 AM9 votes

This mode is terribly balanced and 100% not fun. I can't believe that Riot introduced it in this state. I'm playing it solely to get the poro pet...if I can manage to stomach enough games that is.

Riot has mentioned that they no longer do URF because players quit after. Well, I'm thinking of taking a nice long break from League after this shitshow of a mode that they are shoving down our throats. If you want something quick and casual take a look at Vainglory - at least with their Blitz mode I have fun, win or lose. Guess I'll be playing Vainglory instead soon.

They did URF in All-Star 2018, will it be on live server?

Eleshakai12/6/2018, 5:40:38 PM6 votes

Is this live now? Or when will I actually be able to play this? I keep logging in to see if it's available yet, sighing in discontent, and then playing another unsatisfying series of ARAMs to get my first win. lol

You know I never post on these things, but I am extremely disappointed/pissed there is no Snow URF. I wont even try Nexus blitz do to the fact that they don't want to get to like something to have it taken away, AGAIN.

Daeron the Good12/8/2018, 10:27:23 PM5 votes

Awful changes. The alpha was 100000% better in my opinion. This is just another ARAM. In the alpha objectives were more spread out, so junglers could skirmish, while laners square off against one another. Now the buffs are packed right next to the lanes so its just a 5v5 fiesta the whole time. I wanted a quicker mode that had potential to use other strategies to win rather than just ramming heads over and over, and that is exactly what nexus blitz has become. Riot really screwed this mode up.

WTF is wrong with all of you people? IDC what any of you say, this game mode is fun. Mad props to RIOT for coming up with something original that has the ability to last longer than a week. This for me is more fun than Summoner's Rift. It's random, it has mini-games and appeals to my short attention span. I don't need to spend 30 minutes killing minions and testing the waters for well thought out team fights. The games are sometimes entirely one-sided and the team that wins everything still can manage to lose. It's consistent. It's everything that the community has bitched about NOT HAVING in years. You're seriously all impossible to please. Holy

Clears Throat . . . . WHAT ABOUT SWORD OF THE OCCULT

I didn't think they would make it worse, but they did. Arena is boring as you sit there for so long doing nothing. ARURF ruins the game if it happens first - whoever got the most champs to 6 auto-wins the event and the rest of the game. The other events are OK, but dull. A lot of people I play with don't even bother with them. The map has too many choke points - cc usually wins. It is a lot less fun than last time.

As a support main, I've always been interested in how supports do in other game modes. In new blitz, its trash.

Now, this is meant to be a fast game, with stuff happening like crazy, but it seems to be a bruiser/assassin fest. I loved the new scuttle race. Didn't love the arena in 1v1.

I'll play another 5 or so rounds before I start officially stating that only certain champs are viable. Hopefully that's not right.

I know the whole story around URF being on rotation was that people came back in droves for it and then trickled away just as quickly, implying the takeaway was "people get withdrawal from not being able to play URF in any of its blighted variations." Yeah, I'm gonna have to side with Phryxia and Daeron and Squitter on this; I've actually had a lot less fun with Nexus Blitz for much the same reasons as URF: once you start the snowball rolling, there is just no coming back from it, or so little coming back from it that it's just a miserable experience to try and claw at it. And a "deliberately unbalanced" mode becomes a lot less fun when people "solve" it, and it really feels like a lot of people have started to "solve" Nexus Blitz like they did for URF. I even have to say it, Nexus Blitz was actually the mode that not only killed itself for me, but dragged the rest of the game with it. It was just that miserable a time that I'm about done. Just wanted to explain why this player suddenly stopped playing, so that they don't think I'm having "withdrawal" from not getting to torture myself in that goddamn out of season April Fools Day mode again.

WHERE DO I FIND THE MISSONS FOR SNOWDOWN I'VE LOOKED EVERYWHERE?

Worst game mode ever, so bring. Wont play if no missions, and missions are too hard to complete.

Hrmm everyone seems to hate it. I love it. Definitely too fast paced to play too many of these in a row before risking a heart attack.

please for the love of runeterra, when nexus blitz is ready to be a fully fleshed out gamemode with its own theme, make it a VOID themed map! <3 it would be amazing and give players the taste of being in the void the thirst for!

could really open up some good chances for hints at future void champs and events! and give players a good look at what the potential of being in the void would be like!

plus a fresh feel for new jungle monsters and i new look for "minions" instead of the classic look.

I used to que jg but got tired of having to solo so now I que lane and get jg anyway cause no one want's to jg. jg is fun when you are not stuck with the guys that don't do it, when you are it isn't fun at all. just sad.

i know people are going to act how they act but there has to be something.
