It says it would drop as a skin shard, but it should say a skin permanent!

A skin shard means you have to spend orange essence to unlock it. A skin permanent is automatically unlocked with no need to spend essence. All Mythic and Ultimate skin drops are skin permanents, not shards.

Pretty sure that's not true unless it happened recently. I got the Lancer Zero Hecarim skin as a shard and had to use orange essence to upgrade it to permanent.

It happened earlier this year, though I don't remember when exactly. I wouldn't say "recent" but it was after Hecarim came out for sure.

From the Hextech Crafting Guide currently:

Big Drops, Free Unlock: Ultimate and mythic skins drop as auto-redeeming permanents (no orange essence required to upgrade them). If you already own the skin, you'll be able to disenchant them for orange essence.

I wish these hextech skins actually looked good for how hard they are to get. Exclusivity is not enough for me. Cool splash art though.

I think the renekton hextech skin looks really nice though. If I played more Renekton I would probably get it

I have opened 8 gemstones total since they became available. Is there any way to get these skins without buying the boxes and gambling that you will find enough?

Buy the guaranteed Gem Stone bundles? I usually go for the 10 Capsule bundles and always get at least one gemstone from them. It's 30+ chances for a gem drop with like a 2% drop rate.
