Compare Your Connection With Lag Report

Introducing Lag Report: A New Tech Tool

TL;DR: Lag Report is a new tool that compares your League connection to others in your area, showing you which ISPs and network setups get the best results.

The internet is dark and full of terrors. If you’ve ever had connection troubles, one of the first things you do is try to figure out what the hell went wrong. We’ve faced these existential questions, too: is it my ISP? Which router settings should I change? Is it my roommate’s questionable torrenting habits? What is life?

For the next campaign in our righteous crusade against lag, we’re shining a light on the root causes of internet issues with Lag Report, a tool that scans the countless ways people connect to League of Legends around the world to find what gets the best results in your area.

We want Lag Report to help you get the most out of your internet; it’s a new tool for transparency that lets you see the best ways people are connecting to League in your area so you can make informed choices with all things internet-related. Check it out and let us know what you think. We’re excited to refine and improve this mad experiment, and the more data points and constructive criticism we get from you guys, the better it’ll be.

  • What is this tool? Lag Report is a website that provides you with visibility into the quality of internet connections to League of Legends based on actual games played. It also includes a bunch of tips on how to get the most out of your connection and breakdowns of what causes lag and ways to fix it.
  • How does it work? We’ve aggregated data from billions of games of League of Legends to allow players to compare their League connection against your ISP and other ISPs in your area.
  • Why should I care? Have you ever wondered how your connection stacks up against other players on your ISP? Have you ever wondered how your ISP stacks up against other ISPs in your area? If so, you’ll enjoy trying out Lag Report.
  • My score is low! Your connection score can be influenced by a variety of factors, however it is most significantly caused by high packet-loss and high jitter. If your score is significantly lower than your ISP’s score or other ISPs in your area, we have multiple recommendations in the “What can I do?” section.
  • What about a ping test tool? Lag Report’s a bit different - it’s not a minute-by-minute way to see your ping before entering a game, but it will give you a new vantage point to judge how good your connection is overall, and what to expect based on your past games. Future attempts at something like a ping tester will be more valuable because of the groundwork laid by Lag Report, and while we don’t have updates on that front right now, we’re certainly not finished with our quest to unmask and destroy lag in all its forms.

Head over to Lag Report and let us know what you think!

So, I just get an application error result... :(

Looks like it is getting slammed by users and is down.

Neat idea, but what I'd really like to see if a way to determine our in-game latency without actually being in-game. It sucks when you get in-game and realize you have horrible ping and basically just lost for your team.

I have issues with my connection going out temporarily, but visibly. It's not bad ping, packet loss, or jitter, it just drops completely but for usually short periods of time like 5-30 seconds. Often it will happen 2-3 times within a single minute, stop for a little bit, then go through the same cycle. Some days it happens a lot, others it doesn't happen at all. It happens to all computers in the house simultaneously, wireless or not.

Will this show up in the lag report? Comcast is known for having this issue (around the nation, not just in my area) but it's so intermittent that it's hard to measure or test in a meaningful way and makes it nearly impossible for their techs to see happen live. It averages out to a relatively small amount of down time in total, but can have a large impact if it happens during a game of League. I've had 4 techs come out over the years to try to deal with it, most have made things temporarily far worse and none have even remotely seen it let alone fixed it.

I unsurprisingly have the worst service in my area. But of course the other two don't actually offer their service at my address... [zombie-nunu-bummed]

I have to use a vpn cause comcast doesn't know how to route packets.

Excellent, Thank you riot!

Will this tool help to identify those seemingly random ping spikes players sometimes experience?

Typically my Ping is between 15-18.

However, from time to time it'll Spike to 700, then drop to 200 then back to 15.

Is it more on my end or could other people connected to my game be an issue? What about Discord? I seem to have issues more often when I'm running DC.

It says i have a 92/100, but last ranked game i played i kept spiking 500-1200 whenever i engaged... Should i be looking at my computer or something?

Scratch that, it said 70 when i logged in

Best score in the last 7 days is higher than the best score in the last 30 days.

I'd like to point out that ever since Riot made the announcement about becoming their own ISP my latency has more than quadrupled (with a clear downtrend over the years). I also went from a stable jitterless latency to one that is very volatile in it's jitter. The jitter is 10-20ms but the volatility is high.

Unrelated to network performance but a bug I reported in closed beta is still present and it is present on multiple hardware architectures (tested throughout the years). The client process doesn't exit cleanly, causing the mouse pointer shadow to become disabled.

I dunno if I trust this thing. Says my score is an 89 but I disconnected from 5 games yesterday and every hour or so my internet has been cutting out for a few minutes for the last week or so.

This tool has helped me a lot. After I saw just how bad my connection score was (41 on wifi), I decided to get an Ethernet cable and now my score is 93! Thank you so much riot for opening my eyes.

My summoner level is 92 and from my experience i do more good than bad, I had experiences where my router shuts down as in it doesn't turn off but if you were to DDOS, basically it froze like 2x this month which abnormal and i have a leaver buster? Is there a way to decrease the time at least of it instead of leaving it 20 minutes every time. Like i said i do more good than bad and it's unfair for players like me,(As in freshman year of high school, I abandon my matches purposely cause sometime family, friends, school, or sports got in the way. However, now I'm a senior and I play a lot more cause wrestling season is over, I've been playing a lot and i honor players and vice versa, and i don't abandon anymore other than the past 2x due to router freezing. Overally being a "good sportsman".) to keep having this long 20 min wait que. Can you guys some how create a system to decrease the amount of time of leaverbuster?

Bad connection? Stop using the goddam ( Wi-Fi ) and use a ethernet cable instead !!!

In the spirit of fair play, could we group players by ping. With this new tech surely in this day and age grouping player by rank then by ping stats just makes sense. Alternatively have a ping cap. so anyone with 20ms gets throttled back to 70ms or 60ms?
