SRU Concept Art Gallery

By Riot ForScience

Summoner’s Rift has come a long way since League’s launch in 2009, but our latest update to ol’ trusty was the biggest change in the map’s history.

While all updates go through iterations and testing, Summoner’s Rift required a huge team of artists to concept and sketch out art for months before we started working in 3D. To celebrate the end of SR’s beta run, we’re releasing a few of the concept art pieces the environment team created, complete with notes and insights from the artists themselves.

I like the new map but I really wish we could see more of a difference in the quadrants

RiotNightblueArt89 votes

Thank you very much for the feedback! We actually tried really different quadrants. The problem we ran into is that when quadrants are drastically more different, it becomes really tricky to blend them so the midlane wouldn't look funny with each side belonging to a completely different climate/atmosphere. We tried "fading out" from the center of each quadrant, but the map simply isn't large enough for the gradual blending we'd like to co-exist with maintaining a consistency within the quadrant. Hope my bad description is making sense :) Thanks again for the comment!

I wonder what grand a task it would be if you just made sort of a dividing line for the middle of the map, like a great divide, a 'no mans land' if you will, so that blending wouldnt be an issue and that it could still give us our... divide! Just a thought! Tryndamere also... some news and or updates of some sort for my man TRYN would be awesome, not quite the place to put it but still all the same!

Cryonicity4 votes

you could always have the middle be nothing and as you get closer to base deepen the theme. i think it would work best if you happen to make them like 2 soveirgn kindoms so that the closer to the capital you are the more rigid it looks. Takes the middle ages. the kingdoms in king arthur's time barely had any impact on the outer regions

Are you Nightblue3? Your name is very similar to him. Bard

Personally I don't see what the problem would be with having midlane look completely different on each side. I think it would be pretty interesting, give some variety to the scenery if you will.

BraveConq4 votes

Riot, if you could put up an example of what Riot Nightblue said about the middle looking funky, and let the players decide whether or not to have it, that would be gr8

would be awesome if viegars lore was he was once a lane caster minon but he worked harder than the rest to achive where he is today

Cipherium10 votes

I never read his lore, but just assumed that was it.

SpikedFruitPunch11 votes

He was a Yordle that was tortured and secluded to the point of insanity. You're a bit off with that assumption.

He was saying it would be awesome he isn't assuming anything.

I was curious, have you guys ever considered having a seasonal rift? I know in the past you guys had the Halloween themed rift, but I think it'd be neat to have a rift for each season. Also maybe include a day and night cycle? These are just suggestions, feedback would be appreciated.

Lil Dank5 votes

Ummm yes please, this would be the coolest thing ever not saying the map atm isnt amazing but if the map went through constent cycles like this i would never get bored of looking at it XD

Blind Minion4 votes

I'm less for the day/night cycles, but even just having a slightly different map for each part of the year (rather than instanced within a single match) would be nice.

Twitched3 votes

Day and Night cycles intrigue me immensely! I think DotA 2 does this but imagine Leona being stronger during the day but at night she weakens and the same with Diana! It would be nearly impossible to balance NOW but it if were implemented initially that would be really cool and drastically change the dynamic of all the phases of the round.

Shroom Thugs! Oh my gosh how adorable and odd.

Dear riot, plz make a HQ wall paper based on these designs. I for one would much appreciate it.

I've been wondering this for a while and was hoping for some clarification; are the two factions on Summoner's Rift meant to represent the Protectorate (South) and the Magelords (North) mentioned in Aatrox's lore? In any case, I LOVE this concept art, I hope to see more like this in the future!

UnKnownScrotem1 votes

The basic story about the rift is as follows: The league of Legends a assembled to settle wars in an arena as opposed to in the outside world. Some champions joined the league willingly, and some were abducted(mainly void-related champs) for the good of runeterra. You can see plenty of factions and groups as you read more lore, but the red and blue teams on the rift are totally separate.

Bloodborne 25 votes

Right, but I meant in the differing styles for the two sides' motifs and minions. The North Side (Red) looks very mystical, even sporting owls and using more Magicky-looking minions, whereas the South Side (Blue) features a more typical stout knight-like look, including a stag motif. Even picture 15 in this concept art references these various looks, naming them as Paladins and Mages. These names very much sound like they could be alt names for Protectorate and Magelords. I'd like to know if the two SR sides are meant as little stand-ins for these lore groups. Possibly not, but I think it has the potential!

The old lore says something along the lines of a big war between Noxus and Ionia was about to break out, so the summoners showed up to stop it. Zilean helped the summoners put everything into a temperol stasis (stop time in that area). This caused the forming of an unstable area, the summoner rift, the two sides are the opposing camps of Noxus and Ionia.

Legostrike2 votes

all of this is old lore, what about in the sense of the new lore? I think it's extremely likely it's the Magelords and protectorate.

Has there ever been a consideration for evolving terrain? Something that can be attacked or felled to block a path or simply grow-over some pre-existing route as time goes by, tightening it, or even fluctuating and gradually changing small pieces of the map? Maybe not a lot of it but a few things here and there would add a lot of depth to team-fight decisions regarding terrain, jungling, and escaping.

I do love the updated SR. I just wonder if the howling abyss or the twisted treeline would get some type of update similar to the magnitude SR got. i would love to see those maps updated, even if just a little.

F3stanie8 votes

those maps have been updated though. so hard. lol.

look up pictures, they seriously got whole visual updates just like SR. SR was the crowning achievement and those maps were the small steps up to it.

My best answer is that they did it for scale/Size. :)

beautiful! I wonder why you never put in the Owl and Stag designs

DeathByChunk224 votes

Someone please explain this to me I was just wondering if like this will actually take affect or its just concepts I am just confused help me please

Riotalex gonzales15 votes

The concepts are usually done before we make 3d in game models. Sometimes we make an awesome mind blowing concept, but it does not work in the game. Examples: The design is hard to click on. Or it does not fit the environment, Or it does not look like tanky enough? or look weak enough? The creatures have to look, in relation to each other, at the correct power level or defensive power level. An environment piece has to be cool but not distracting to champions or effects. All the concept work here is about trying to answer those questions. Does it work with gameplay? Does it fit the big picture? Art serves gameplay.

I hope this answers your question. GG

Imron Zackiev10 votes

if "defensive power level" is a thing i need to see some freaking adimentium armor on lategame skuttles. seriously that thing does not die unless you are an ad or ap hypercarry.

If you guys ever make changes to the jungle in that the jungle camps scale after spawning (like drake and Barron), then you could have "weaker" looking monster camps (e.g. sprites) at the start, then they eventually get replaced with "stronger" looking camps (e.g. Razorbeaks) as the game progresses, maybe with subtle changes in their attack styles or how the buffs work from Smiting the camps. Maybe this would make the jungle feel more alive than just a stasis where things spawn waiting to be killed; it can be a place where monsters kill or be killed and where only the strongest survive. Of course, the current state of the jungle might delay any fruition of this plan, but it's just a thought.

BREAKING NEWS: Ashe Has a secret twin, only just now being revealed. Refer to top right of picture #1 to see the evidence.

Riotalex gonzales11 votes

HEHE,

At one point during this concept we had at least 5 ashes copy and pasted on this concept. The reason for that was to help with scale. When we paint details next to a champ it helps with figuring how big to make things. How big should a pebble be? how big should a brick be? or a tree? or a grass blade? that sense of scale has always been a challenge since SR and dominion, We are getting better at it. :)

CthulhuChAn3 votes

i love how much effort they put into making everything :D especially the birds i didnt know there were many different ideas on what they could have put

RiotNightblueArt7 votes

Haha, finding a bird that doesn't flutter too much (too distracting) was quite a journey for the character pals :)

Raoul3 votes

I think it would really be cool if there was some look of burnt ground or walls inside the dragon pit. Maybe even a fire on a stick where he stands before landing on the ground at spawn.

Does anyone else see Stitch in 11/22?

What about a day and night cycle?? Could add interesting game play? Lets say wwWarwick gains bonuses during the 2 minute night cycle and loses them during the day?

I do think that top lane isn't very affected by Baron. I don't see much purple or blue other than in the river. I think having like some small purple cracks or just barren land in top lane would show Baron's eruption more effectively. Also, what if as the match progressed, the map looked more and more affected by Baron? That's probably really difficult to do, but what if the whole map started off lush and green, then as Baron spawning gets nearer, the map shows signs of Baron's presence. Just an idea :)item 3512
