Is it just me, or are people horribly misinterpreting the atmosphere and mood surrounding Kai'Sa?

Just considering her backstory, her home, family, and everyone she's ever known was killed by the void when she was a child (must have been traumatic), she grew up in a dark underground world where the only light came from things or structures created by things that wanted to obliterate/eat her (must have been traumatic), and to survive, she wears the half-alive zombie-corpse of one of the things that wanted to eat her. And then when she finally gets back to the surface where she came from, her people treat her like a monster, like the monsters she's been running from and fighting all her life.

And everyone has these chibi and bright and shiny anime representations of her as if she's some sort of happy-go-lucky magic girl or something. As if her life hasn't been hell or like she's not on the brink of going insane (which I dunno if she is or isn't, the stories don't say, but I can't imagine that kind of solitude in those conditions can be healthy).

The closest thing to what the mood might actually be is the Sinister Kai'Sa, but even that one is frustrating because according to the story, she's not evil, nor does she take pleasure in the hunt.

I am the frustrated! [sg-shisa]

Maybe share some blame with the designer who makes her look like a high-fashion super model. Obviously, the inspiration for all these fan arts are based on the splash art-- which is a beautiful, buxom, badass space agent-type.

Count Buffon8 votes

Yeah, it really doesn't look all that horrible and scary. Cassiopeia is also supposed to be hideous, but is still mostly hawt.

The lore is written more in line with (Star Craft) Kerrigan's visuals, but the execution here is "hawt body suit void chick, 9.5/10 would bang". Kind of thematically iffy here IMO.

Gut reaction isn't "omg scary hideous, would instinctively shun". It's "kewl edgy anime hawtness, want angry purple waifu nao plzkthx". Lore claims that we're supposed to experience the former.

GoldTracer2 votes

Well what sells will sell but in terms of the actual lore, I don't mind. Everybody goes through horrible things and we shouldn't ever keep it that way. Finding beauty in even the worst of situations is an amazing thing to do. It honestly helped me get through a lot of the stuff I have been through. I choose to find inspiration through these "symbols" not degrade them.

Besides art is the seeking of the beautiful. If you had amazing skills, would you prefer to spend time on something you adore to make it ugly? You wouldn't make your car look like crap especially if it was a Corvette, etc.

MiMidna3 votes

I have to totally agree, look at the other beings that came into contact with the void like her own father. There isn't anything lore related as to why her body stays youthful or so "human" like in the void thanks to the symbiote.

UberChayChay3 votes

Maybe not in League lore, but there are plenty of examples in nature and other fantasy universes of beauty being used to draw in prey. I could see the symbiote maintaining or enhancing her appearance over time (she's had it on since she was a girl, so the organism affecting her physically in such a way makes sense to me) as another way to attract prey. Now granted, the void monsters she hunts probably don't give a shit, but I'm sure the symbiote wouldn't mind some human sized snacks.

MiMidna1 votes

Not interested in this character outside of league lore since that's where she exists. Maybe if that's what the writers, Riot universe expanders intended and it definitely should be explicit in their lore if that's the case.

Jet is Alive18 votes

That's a problem that a lot of the artists seem to have at Riot. From the broken back poses to the gravity defying boobs, it seems as if the only women that are capable of being champions are the models. Only exceptions being children like Annie and Zoe and the Amazonian Illaoi. It's depressing that a character like Taliyah is groundbreaking because her nose structure is different. I remember reading a bit that explained that the facial structure of every female league champ before Taliyah was basically the same. That frustrates me a lot. I don't even think the hollywood-beautiful is all that attractive. The way they have only one template for them is so disappointing and disingenuous. [sg-ahri-3]

Zenbuuuu9 votes

Don't forget Kalista. Her visuals are fittingly grotesque with her character. But yeah, the lady champs tend to fit a tight formula. I'd be interested to take a look at all the male champs and see how they vary in comparison.

Count Buffon8 votes

Indeed, Kalista gets the award for being the only halfway-scary humanoid female in the game.

There are some less-swimsuit-model-proportioned champions, and a couple somewhat older champions among them:

Illaoi Lissandra Taliyah Shyvana

The rest of the female humanoids are all yordles, children, or hawt chix (as far as I can remember off the top of my head). And it took YEARS before those entered the game (and they're all cool and unique in their own ways).

Riven almost made the list by being sort of androgynous, but the bunny skin thing sort of threw that off a bit.

Not Sexy is something they finally learned how to do after three seasons or so, starting with Shyvana.

Sexy monsters:

Cassiopeia Elise Zyra Kaisa

Even Human Form Elise has, like, a sexy BDSM spider lady costume, even though spiders are naturally scary. Zyra? Not all that changed by the transformation. Cass is still pretty hawt considering she got a Curse Of Unsexy while temptressing around and stealing magic stuff from the wrong dude.

Kai'Sa's lore/visuals mismatch is an unsurprising slide into the old, comics-inspired "always err on the side of sexy" style of thinking. She does have a cool look, but her look is more in line with, say, a bounty hunter who intentionally innovated the void to use it as a weapon against them or something. She does not look like some monstrosity who fought her way home from hell only to be rejected by family.

Some really creative, visually compelling, scary things COULD be done with transformations like these, but hawt anime lazors are the default fallback.

Rônîn5 votes

You must have forgotten that Rek'sai is a girl or that the lamb part of kindred is represented as a girl. Plus if we are talking about unrealistic representations of beauty, then how about every male character too? I would love to be super buff like Darius or as skinny as Ezreal or have the confidence to show my extremely cut bruce lee looking muscles like Lee Sin. Its every character, not just the women.

We haven't had a model champ in a while. They have been getting pretty diverse and better with their designs because they are trying to avoid syndra-figure cutouts. I personally like having a model champ every once and a while.

yaboydanny5 votes

Should we make the counter argument about all the male characters in the game? No? Because no one cares.

Yes. Exactly why skins are a thing. They're a different take on a champion, even in an alternate reality or universe. Your post is correct.

Tessel84 votes

I think primarily 2 things play into this.

1:The art and story don't play it off as if she's traumatized, broken, or hell bent. She's portrayed as righteous in many ways, and far from vengeful or even spiteful towards the void. I feel like the story tellers could've given a little more anger in her character, more sorrow from her past(or current standings with civilization), or both, and given her A LOT more emotional/psychological depth. Rather than someone who essentially embraced the void and now is fighting it for the greater good.

2:Communities often like to take characters out of their natural scene. If something appears bright and cheery, a community will make depictions of twisted horror and nightmares. If something looks terrifying or grotesque, people will make it happy and chibi. This can partly be explained by the simple want of having a character depicted in all scenarios, kinda like the emotion panels where it'll have a character when they're sad, happy, mad, etc. If a character is already happy and excited, they'll need to create an image where they are sad or angry, etc., etc.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents on the topic.

Sol Sovereign6 votes

What are you even on about? People will draw "cute" creations for whatever champions they like. Be they male, female, eldritch horror. Look at all of the cute and fun images of Vel'koz or Kayn (despite their lores and what they are). I honestly have no idea where the blind spot on people like you comes from. Shove off. As long as Kai'sa is well represented in game, and in the lore, who cares how others show their infatuation for her? What a joke.[slayer-jinx-unamused]

Jet is Alive1 votes

I don't have a problem with cute and sexy renditions of a champion. I have a problem with ALL OF THEM being cute and sexy renditions, especially when the artists of Riot ALSO perpetuate that same trope. It makes it boring. It's why hollywood-hawt physiques aren't that attractive. It seems disingenuous to her lore, which is my biggest issue. So if people wanna make fan-fic new renditions of Kai'Sa and all the others, that's fine and awesome, but none of the images I've seen seem to be anything close to what her world ACTUALLY looks like.

Sol Sovereign2 votes

Just watching that video I had seen one "dark" image, 3 neutrals, and maybe 2 "cutes". Kai'sa hasn't been out long enough to even get enough artwork for complaints. DA only has around 140 images (many just being wallpapers of her splash) and pixiv only has 12. Conventionally attractive doesn't ≠ hollywood. From a lore standpoint she could look like anything so I'm not sure how Kai'sa being conventionally attractive breaks her lore. Going by her dialogue I'd say she's rather optimistic to say the least. I mean, one would have to be to not go insane by such circumstances.

Kayn and Varus are far more attractive then men in hollywood and I see no problems with that given that they hosts for super demons. In my estimation, Azir has the most heart-breaking lore and if he can be drawn and be presented with levity, then anyone in this game can. I brought up Vel'koz from before. Almost all of his are is silly and cute. Is there a trope causing that or... what?

Just a few "serious" images of Kai'sa just by googling it.

Xeniphon3 votes

Hmm, I don't find most of the female champs to be sexy or cute. Maybe thou protest too much methinks? What one person finds sexy, another might find meh. Not to mention... LoL is all over the world. Go look what some people in a very different culture find sexy/cute and you might be surprised. Also, I would guess most of the champs are aged 15-35 so apart from a couple of exceptions (like Annie whose what, 10?) I'd expect the blossom of youthful female bodies to be present. Also, typically, who wins the most fights to get in to the hardest competitions? The fit iron abs chicks. Look at the girls in UFC and such, they aren't fat or grotesque because they focus on their bodily health. That pays dividends in the attractiveness department. The only argument I see that you could really use about them being too sexy would be the age old 'super skimpy bra armor gives more protection' principle, assuming you're into huge amounts of cleavage.

yeah i was wondering why people were like interpreting her character like that

So what you're saying is that she was born in the dark underground. Molded by it. She didn't see the light of the Rift until she was a woman

Ok. Does anyone else think that Kai' Sa Reminds them of Samus Aran from Metroi? The hunting female protagonist, the suit's look, and its ability to upgrade itself. Even Kai' Sa's login theme and Super Metroid's theme sound similar.

You are not alone! Thought the exact same thing. I'm ok with it. :) Metroid is both an astounding set of games with some of the best VG music around.

Bio-booster Armor Guyver. Far and above. Definitely some Samus similarities but this is definitely a very, -very- Guyver champ. Sorry, maybe that anime and manga (and live action) series is a bit before the time of some players, but man... ignore the rest, check that out. There's even a suit with the giant shoulder blasters. Quick Edit: and that isn't a bad thing, I loved the Guyver stuff when I was younger, so this is only a positive in my eyes [slayer-jinx-wink]

Okay lets nerf Rammus next please and tanks in general. There is no reason for level 6 Rammus to be one shotting people before his taunt wears off. That can't honestly be what you guys are intending right? Tanks are just more useful in every aspect compared to other melees who build damage, and even ADC. If you're building full tank you should be more useful in team fights, you shouldn't be able to 1v1 damage champions like Tryndamere, Fiora, or ADC's.
