Ask Riot: Easter eggs and books

Welcome to Ask Riot!

This week, we’re talking easter eggs and lore books.

Are there any hidden easter eggs in League?

I can’t speak for the rest of the game, but as someone who worked on the Summoner’s Rift map update, a few things come to mind. Looking over the map, I remember Easter eggs were something we wanted to add in FOREVER, but because we had set such a high standard for our ourselves to finish the art, we kept pushing it out. After every sprint, we'd say “I'd love to put in this or that Easter egg.” At the end of development, we finally got a couple of weeks to jam on it and the team went nuts. My personal favorites are the immortalized old 'sock puppet baron head' and Helmet Bro's helmet sprinkled around the Rift. :D (video content discovered/created by users)

Though I can’t confirm or deny any specific finds, the community has done a great job of investigating the map and coming up with theories, like in this video.

Will we ever get books about the characters of League? Or a book that tells the whole history of League?

It's certainly something we've talked about, and many of us (myself very much included) are keen to do at some point - though there are no solid, locked-in plans just yet. We definitely want to tell more stories. For now, we feel that shorter stories like Burning Tides: The Reckoning, Shadow and Fortune, Bird and the Branch and Bloodline are a little more accessible, able to be created quicker, and are a good way for us to see what players think of them, what resonates, etc. As long as you are reading them and enjoying them, we'll be looking to do more.

Ask Riot

We promise to read every question, but we can’t guarantee they’ll all get answers. Some questions may already be answered elsewhere, and some won’t be right for Ask Riot. This isn’t the best place to announce new features, for example, and we might skip conversations on issues we’ve talked about in depth before (though we can clarify individual points).

We are listening, though, so keep asking. We’ll make sure your questions are heard by the Rioters working on the stuff you’re curious about.

I'd totally buy a book of League tales. I love when games expand their universe via literature, like Halo and Gears of War.

I would just like to say, I am in fact reading and enjoying the short stories. So please keep looking to do more.

In the Star Wars universe (before Disney purchase), there are canonical books written which had to be approved by a board of Star Wars peeps before passing into canonical history. Would Riot consider something like this? I would LOVE to work/write for Riot, and if a committee was made, you could help individual writers get published, whilst saving on internal workspace being filled up with writers trying to come up with concepts. Edit: sidenote, other entities, for example Wizards of the Coast (Magic the Gathering) have books for their overarching storyline, just as another example.

Can we get more cosmetic buff easter eggs? It broke my heart when the Pirates v Ninjas buffs were removed. Need more like the, or even the Sunglasses buff or Zilean v Volibear.

I honestly think that a story about the whole Xerath vs Azir thing could make a great book.

Question! I know you may not be allowed to share full details, but I was wondering, does Riot intend to put more side quests with rewards into the game? Such as the "Thrill of the Hunt!" and "Battle for Freljord" quests? I don't know about anyone else, but I would LOVE more character interactions in game!

I don't want to see Runeterra get constricted by 'official' canon too much. Long running storylines (spiderman, xmen etc) frequently get so weighed down by their own lore that there has to be a 'reset' and everything gets scraped back to zero. Something like the 'Thieves World' anthologies would be nice. Stories on different champions that don't necessarily lock into an overarching plot would allow for a lot of character exploration that doesn't carry over to Summoners Rift.

Would it be at all possible for a league movie to be brought to life (preferably not live action) or a short mini series, similar to that of Halo: Forward unto Dawn or Halo Legends. I could definitely go without some in game events for a while if it meant we got a movie. [slayer-jinx-wink]

In my opinion the lore of League of Legends is often neglected, which led to Riot writing shorter, less relevant lores for many of the newer champions. I think that the community needs to know more about the lore and appreciate it as one of the core parts that makes the game what it is. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to have a sort of novel/series which ties in the lore of the different champions with a sort of plot? Upvote if you agree, because I know of someone who is really keen to make one with me - and if the community wants to help (will be credited if we use your ideas), tell me about it. If a Rioter sees this, we actually have the beginnings of an novel/idea already, so tell me if you want to see it.

I would LOVE if they had graphic novels for League of Legends. Just like Transformers and Star Wars! Their artists have the amazing skill to do this type of stuff but sadly I guess it takes more effort than a book(?) [slayer-pantheon-rainbows]

There are a ton of undocumented easter eggs. Like Gnar's "Jay Watford" saying (audio guy there). Really surprised more people haven't found them as there's tons.

So summoners rift can have easter eggs but graves can't have a cigar?

EvilUnicornLord10/21/2016, 4:30:12 PM2 votes

It's not just Easter Eggs that are present around the map, but it has some insane details that are just overlooked while playing the game. And I think it's pretty cool having champion teasers in the forms of Easter Eggs (such as Bard's face appearing in the river prior to Bard being announced, bushes rustling before the age of Kled and Skaarl, and the very obvious voice of Ivern whenever you kill a jungle camp), I'd like to see more of those in the future so we can guess what the next champions will be like.
