Ask Riot: Honor Edition

Welcome to Ask Riot!

It’s been a month (that was fast) since Honor launched, and in the first couple weeks alone more than 56 million honors were awarded. Now that we’ve all had a few games with it, let’s kick off an all-Honor edition of Ask Riot.

What if I already own the Warwick and Twitch skins? Will I not be rewarded at all?

You’ll still be getting key frags, loading-screen flairs, end-of-season rewards, and the rest of the goodies in Honor Capsules. We hear you that they’re not quite as exciting if you have those skins already, but the good news is that we’ll add new things to the capsules over time, so more stuff is coming.

Why can you only honor just one person in the new system?

The goal was to make Honor feel good on both the giving and receiving ends. Honoring one person per game prompts careful consideration of who you give your vote to; Honor should not feel like the equivalent of shaking everyone’s hand at the end of a game. Think of it more like an award you get each game to give to a teammate. It’s also why we have categories. When you get an honor, you know that someone chose to award you the only honor they had in that game for a specific category.

Early on we did look at concepts that involved multiple choices, but we ultimately went with a single choice to make it feel more valuable and also to keep the voting process quick, since now you do it every game.

Do you plan to replace Honorable Opponent? Enemies can be honorable too!

Enemies can definitely be honorable too, but generally when you play League, you chat with your team much more than with the enemy team. You have a better ability to judge how honorable players were on your team than the enemy team, so we wanted teammates to be the focal point of Honor. Also, we wanted to simplify the Honoring process and make the decision-making as straightforward as possible. Choosing among two to four options is less taxing than choosing among five to nine.

We are exploring some options that allow opponents to be recognized, but don’t have anything concretely in the works yet.

I had hundreds of Honors in the old system. Now they’re all gone. What gives?

We feel you. We’re planning a small gift for folks who were big into old-school Honor. In terms of design, we want to tip our hat to folks who really cared about and engaged in old-school Honor. We’re still ironing out the details and we’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready.

What’s the best way to level up? Why isn’t there a level up meter?

The best way to level up is straightforward: Get games in, steadily rack up honors, and don’t get penalties. The whole team gets a small bonus when all teammates give honor in a game, too! The meter question has a more complex answer:

It sucks to feel like you’re not making progress towards leveling up, and missing feedback about your forward progress is a clear pain point so far. It’s something we want to fix, but not with a progress bar. Since Honor levels are meant to stretch across a whole season, a slow-moving progress bar might feel like an awful grind.

The answer to the problem is most likely more clear and more frequent notifications about the honors you’re receiving as you move onward and upward. These notifications can give you cool info, like if a majority of your honors are around shotcalling. Tidbits like that can help you sharpen your strengths as a player, while signalling forward progress in the level system.

Have a question? Head over to Ask Riot and sign into your League account. Check out the Dos and Don’ts, then ask away.

Ask Riot

We promise to read every question, but we can’t guarantee they’ll all get answers. Some questions may already be answered elsewhere, and some won’t be right for Ask Riot. This isn’t the best place to announce new features, for example, and we might skip conversations on issues we’ve talked about in depth before (though we can clarify individual points).

We are listening, though, so keep asking. We’ll make sure your questions are heard by the Rioters working on the stuff you’re curious about.

Why did you remove the option to honor an opponent?

I love the new honor system but i think there should be some sort of honor gauge so people can see how their honor is improving or diminishing.

I really like that this edition of Ask RIOT addressed the honor system. I think the responses are good and that RIOT is really on the right track with honor.

It probably helps that a lot of players are seeing level 3 honor, which is a nice direct feedback for them. I understand that you don't want progress bars, but I'm also glad that you understand the problem with not having clear feedback (many players posted on the boards asking about seeing their honor progress and a lot of posts were made constantly asking if anyone hit level 3 honor yet). I'm reassured to read that you guys have ideas about how to solve that problem with some sort of notifications. I also really like the idea that those notifications can give players an idea of the types of honor they have been receiving, which is something a raw progress bar wouldn't necessarily show them! I look forward to seeing what shape these notifications ultimately take (whether it's based upon hitting certain honor progress thresholds or based on every so many games played or based on real time passed). There's probably lots of ways to give those notifications and lots of potential triggers to sort through.

Keep up the excellent work!

Will you continue to tweek the system, or is it now set in stone for a while?

The GG <3 category is leading people to honor whoever got the highest score in many games. We all "love playing with" people who carry the game, but simply getting a good score in the game shouldn't be worthy of honor. ADCs almost always love playing with their supports and vice-versa, so the pair almost always trade GG honors. That doesn't really feel like the intent of the system.

To me, the categories should be reworked to encourage good behavior. "tilt proof" is... mostly clear. Some people think it means that despite having a heated argument you still played well, which I don't think is good. "Leadership" is even more ambiguous --- does it mean you took the lead and carried the game, or that you were great at pinging and saved people from danger over and over? GG is just making honor meaningless.

Instead of "tilt proof" maybe we could have, "Ignored the troll" and "Contributed despite being behind". Instead of leadership we could have, "good game communication". GG could just be a <3 checkbox for each player that is simply added up and displayed at the end for each player so everyone knows how many people loved playing with that person.

Regardless, thanks for the new system, it HAS made things better.

Why do you restart at level 1 honor when you finish your punishment?

Does dodging games or timers affect honor?

ever since the honor leveling system had been in effect i had been the same level honor 2. I have not once gotten chat restriction or had any kind of bans at all, i have been honored multiple times as most honored on my team. I have a lot of games played!! I would say close to 225+. I think 225 games, is enough to at least level to honor 3 from honor 2. So please someone explain why i have not leveled up? I do understand you do get honor per game whether you get honored or not. With this many games it is clear to me and from what I have read about this honor system from the patch itself the discussion boards from moderators to players that I should have at least leveled to 3.

Add to the Honor System change the Honor for opponents option again... It was one of the best things ever... "GG WP ALL" is just not the same thing. If you really enjoyed and liked playing against those opponents you are going to care enough to actually go make an extra click before "Play Again"....

Riot I have been dishonorable for quite a while now when it clearly stated in the major big update a while back that in the season restart, honor will be reset. But I have not grown at all. Please explain.

Just want to clarify if honors are worth more in ranked compared to normals and aram? My bro just got Honors 3 but plays a lot of ranked but doesn't get much honor, I play a lot of normals and arams and get at least 1-2 honors per game and at times 4 honors and yet I'm stuck at honors 2.

I'm glad that he's honors 3 but if you progress faster in ranked compared to the other game modes then it seems a bit crummy. So if anyone can confirm that honors are worth more in ranked please let me know.

Thanks
