What’s New in Ranked 2019

Riot·1/19/2019, 2:08:37 AM·3 votes·312,280 views

Ranked 2019 kicks off with a new look and a few upgrades. New tiers, new rewards, and a position rank preview join your pursuit to the top. The competitive season begins on January 24. Here’s everything you need to know.

Placement Games

This year you’ll get a provisional rank after your first placement game. Your provisional rank shows where you’ll start the climb and updates after each placement game. Provisional ranks are only visible to you until you complete placements. You can’t lose LP during placements, so your provisional rank can only go up. Wins earn accelerated LP and you skip through promos. After eight placement games in a position (ten games in Flex queue), you’ll get a starting rank. New accounts get seeded at the bottom of the ladder with a fresh opportunity to climb.

Splits & Rewards

There are three splits this season. Over the course of a split, you’ll earn Split Points for wins to unlock split-specific rewards to show off your rank in and out of game. Split Points reset after each split. There’s no break between splits, and playing games over multiple splits increases your rewards. Splits will last about three months each, the first ending in mid-April.

Ranked Armor evolves to reflect your current rank and achievements earned through Split Points. Split Points upgrade your armor, so even if you’re 100+ games in Silver IV, your wins shine sterling. End-of-season rewards aren’t affected by Split Points, and you can still expect to sell your soul for a Victorious Skin.

Position Ranks and Position Rank Preview

Position ranks are live in Korea and North America only for the first Ranked split. Position ranks give you a rank and matchmaking rating per position. With different ratings for each position, you won’t be punished if you get autofilled or branch out from your one-trick Draven to show Riven some love top.

Crushing it one position can help you make gains across all of them. After each game, LP splashes into the other positions you’ve completed placements for, reflecting your overarching performance. Loss streaks cause negative LP splashing, so even in an off-position, playing to win matters.

Following the preview in Split 1, every region will have the same Ranked system. We’re tracking both position ranks and single ranks globally to make the swap at the start of Split 2. Send us your feedback throughout the preview and see our devs go deeper on position ranks.

Tiers & Divisions

This season welcomes two new tiers, Iron and Grandmaster. Every tier now has four divisions. With fewer divisions and more tiers, your rank more accurately reflects your skill and improvement. The first new tier, Iron, starts below Bronze. The second new tier, Grandmaster, sits between Master and Challenger. GG Bronze 5.

Master+

We want reaching Master+ to feel like a super meaningful achievement. But the huge difference in number of players per region meant the accomplishment wasn’t universally comparable. We’ve adjusted Master+ to equalize this difference so top players across regions can play in tiers matching their skill level. You’ll see larger or smaller groups of Master+ players by region.

In Master and above your position ranks collapse into a single rank. Demoting from Master reinstates position ranks. Upgraded visuals boldly point out when you are promoting and demoting in Master and above.

GLHF on your climb.

I sincerely hope you reconsider this position ranked, as a fill main, this is an extremely toxic change to my playstyle. While I do have a preferred role, I don't really care what position I play.

This change already reinforces negative stereotypes for players and encourages players to type cast themselves rather than investigate new roles, new positions, and strategies. It accomplishes the exact opposite of what you hope to inspire. When the already existing 1 tricks get autofilled they will care less about the victory because they already only care about playing their main role on their main champion creating more toxic games as higher skilled players fill lower tier games on alternative roles.

I could honestly not think of a worse change... Well maybe thinking a 5 base movement speed nerf to Irelia is an appropriate nerf to a champion that can dash near infinitely with no mana concerns whatsoever.

Wait... You state that the change to fewer divisions and more tiers means "your rank more accurately reflects your skill and improvement." But the number of "slots" a player's skill level can fit into has remained the same:

Bronze 1 to 5 + Silver 1 to 5 + Gold 1 to 5 + Platinum 1 to 5 + Diamond 1 to 5 + Master + Challenger = 27 different ranks

Iron 1 to 4 + Bronze 1 to 4 + Silver 1 to 4 + Gold 1 to 4 + Platinum 1 to 4 + Diamond 1 to 4 + Master + Grandmaster + Challenger = 27 different ranks

Basically, I see two changes from this: Statements like "I'm ranked Platinum" become slightly more specific, as each tier now encompasses a smaller portion of the playerbase. Players will need to play more 5-game promotion series for the same amount of progress up the ranked ladder.

Hey, Riot. I'm pretty excited to start playing season 9 ranked. Hope it goes well.

As someone who only plays 2 roles this different rank per position thing doesn't make sense to me, as getting filled will just make me not care, and with ranked lp splash will also hurt my rank if i lose, so at the end if the day it seems to me like it hurts my ranked experience no matter what, and as most of the comments or opinions i read or hear on the subject seem to be opposed to the idea, it makes me wonder if riot actually reads half the comments on these boards. i'm sure they do, but it seems like they don't as they haven't really addressed the back lash much other than saying they'll test it out instead of making it all season long

Still don't see an answer on how system deals with swapping roles and autofilled. I don't care that their MMR will tighten up as they swap more. I care that I will have this diamond swapped jungle in my silver games. And so far I see nothing to save this from happening. Same for trolls. If this lp splash is around the same as lp loss for dodging. You gotta be really naive people won't troll. So we need to see what exactly you mean by "lp splash" before season starts and we realize it is -3 lp.

GFREEMEN1/21/2019, 6:00:30 PM7 votes

Riot how are you going to deal with those that just throw games that are autofilled because it does not affect their main role much? ANY number of games like this will hurt the entire team that did NOT get auto filled as they will lose FULL LP while the Troll will lose little.

You say you will be watching players for this and adjust their main roll LP loss but ANY number of games where they lose less is toxic to those of us that got our main role.

I'm honestly really excited about the prospect of position ranks. I can't wait to see how it plays out!

In history... doesn't the Iron age come after the Bronze Age... come on now guys

I like the position ranked changes but I truly wish that more than just winning or losing was considered in your ranking. Being on a good team is completely random especially at lower levels. Feeders also play a huge role in whether you win or lose in the lower levels. Therefore, I wish there was a way to also include individual performance in your ranking points per game. Maybe the position ranking is a step towards this. It shouldn't be that difficult. Riot already has so many individual stats that you can see and already gives you a grade for your in game gameplay. Just one more step...

Talon Gerrard1/19/2019, 10:47:55 PM5 votes

Riot I know you spent a long time on this whole position rank thing, but why do you even think this is going to be a good idea? This just makes things even more confusing. If anything, I think it would be better to keep the rank system itself as it is, but have the positional rank there on the side as a type of rating system. You still climb normally, but you will be able to show off how you do in each position as the game keeps track of what position you play each game. You win a game? You still rank up like the way we do now. But now the game adds to your record for the position you played that game. Someone can look at your profile and see "oh this guy is high gold, and going by is position ratings he's about a 54% winrate in the mid lane and has a lot of games played there and a 75% winrate in the top lane but he doesn't have nearly as many games so he just happened to win those matches he actually went top more than he happened to lose." And they would see all of your position rating in one spot.

What happens in promos if you get your secondary role? Do you just have a non-promo break game?

Also, with all these positions, do you have to play a shit tonne more promos?

C9 Zanthyr1/19/2019, 1:50:01 PM5 votes

I'm not sure how i feel about new accounts starting at the bottom of the ladder. You'll have silver-challenger level players in new accounts playing against the Iron tier players. How are they supposed to stay relevant?

MagiccNoodlez1/20/2019, 4:45:19 AM5 votes

So hypothetically, with these position ranks, I could be a platinum support player/rank, and go top where my rank is then iron (because of the new position ranks), and I would go against another IRON top laner?!?!?! That doesn't seem fair at all...

ChimneyCrasher1/19/2019, 7:31:41 PM4 votes

the thing about people starting at the bottom of the ladder really encourages smurfs to smash

ngl I don’t think irons would like smurfs to smash

ShadowScorpionX1/21/2019, 6:41:24 PM4 votes

hey with 700 million lost this year over previous, do you think maybe it's time to make mmr public or start matching people up according to their rank so that it's easier to climb out of that rank?

LoFat Yogurt1/19/2019, 6:33:31 AM4 votes

If I read the word split one more time in a split sentence, split paragraph, my split personality will show in a split second. Good Lord!

Refuse Felix1/21/2019, 11:11:05 PM3 votes

I would like to know when the season starts, how long it will last, and/or when it will end. If you want to split the season up further than a year-long season that's fine. When does the next split start after the first one? How long is each split going to last? I think you have done poorly at disclosing this information, and I don't understand why it's difficult information to decide on, and then disclose. "The competitive season begins on January 24. Here’s everything you need to know." No, this is not even close to "everything I need to know." You have not even covered the basics.

FearedDevilTTV1/24/2019, 2:03:04 PM3 votes

Okay my biggest question is about how the Armor and Split points are going to work. Because it is said that you can use your points to upgrade your armor. But i want to know where will these points be shown and when will you allow us to spend these points. Will you guys be making us wait till the end of the splits or will you guys be allowing us to upgrade them at anytime. Because i feel as a player if you make us wait till the end of the splits it will put a massive bummer on the whole armor as a whole. Because when i first saw the armor i thought wow it looks amazing yet when it came out it was kind of a let down to me. Seeing it in the pictures with the swords and spiked helmets looking amazing but instead we got some very basic helmets with nothing. So I was hoping it would show up in our loot area so we can watch out points go up. So that when we see we are getting close it gives us even more incentive to climb and play.

why does individual role rank exist...so a high elo player can switch roles and be placed with lower tiers? why should i have to plat against a plat 1 as a silver 3 just because they are off role?

Honor Jungle1/19/2019, 7:58:54 AM2 votes

what time does the season start

darkles1/25/2019, 5:03:56 AM2 votes

What even is this ranking.. as if the climb wasn't hard enough last season, now it seems impossible. This has completely taken any ounce of fun out of League. How is possible that I went 10/1/18 as support my first game of the season, we won within 23 minutes, and I was immediately placed into Bronze 4? Won 6/8 games and am stuck in Bronze when I was Silver 3 last season. Makes me not want to even bother because I know I will never get anywhere now. I was super excited for the new ranking, and it's so disappointing.

It is neither strength nor rarity, as Diamonds are plentiful through the planet as of 2012..... the people controlling the supply are what makes them expensive as crafts , but they are NO LONGER rarer than gold/platinum.
