Champion Update: Shen

Riot·1/4/2016, 11:04:02 PM·20 votes·311,700 views

Eye of Twilight

Shen’s a bit of an odd duck. He’s a ninja who likes to be punched in the face (spoilers: that’s not changing), and while bits of his kit are super unique and impactful, he also sports two painfully generic abilities. He’s been suffering from a pretty severe case of old-schoolitis, basically, making him a prime candidate for some champion update TLC. So we’ve given him some. Alongside brushing up the big guy’s model so it’s closer to his awesome splash, we’ve also spent a bunch of time updating some of his abilities. Now Shen's power manifests as a ki blade that joins him as he enters the Rift, and which he controls with his abilities. Here's his new kit:

Abilities

Passive: Ki Barrier

After casting an ability, Shen gains a temporary shield. The shield has a relatively long cooldown which is significantly reduced if one of his abilities affects an allied or enemy champion.

Q: Twilight Assault

Shen calls his spirit blade, empowering his next three basic attacks to deal damage based on a portion of his target’s max health. If his spirit blade collides with an enemy champion on its way to him, Shen deals increased damage and gains greatly increased attack speed. All enemies struck by the returning blade briefly suffer reduced movement speed when moving away from Shen.

W: Spirit's Refuge

Shen’s spirit blade creates a protective barrier that allows Shen and his nearby allies to dodge all basic attacks for a few seconds. The ability triggers when there are allied champions in the zone - if there are no allies are in the zone, it waits to start until one gets close enough.

E: Shadow Dash

Passive: Shen recovers a flat portion of energy whenever he deals damage with Twilight Assault or Shadow Dash.

Active: Shen dashes in a target direction, dealing damage to all enemy champions in his path and taunting them briefly.

R: Stand United

Shen channels as he prepares to teleport to an allied champion anywhere on the map. As he channels, he grants his target a shield, and once he arrives, he brings his spirit blade with him.

First things first: Shen’s staying largely faithful to his original design. He’s still a tanky energy-based champ, and his E and R are pretty much identical. You’ll still be able to pull off your last-second ults to save a teammate from death, and still surprise your enemies with those fancy-pants taunt -> flash -> taunt moves. Or y’know, accidentally flash -> taunt absolutely nothing -> spill drink over keyboard, if we’re being real.

Then there are Shen’s other abilities. We wanted to put into effect a pretty fundamental change to his combat patterns by giving Shen and his opponent more things to do and think about during each game. His old Q had some neat interactions with other champions, but ultimately it was basically a point-and-click damage ability with some bells and whistles attached. Feint - his old W - had aged even worse, and was basically a pretty bland shield (because practically no-one built AP on Shen) that just interfered with his otherwise precious energy pool. We quickly identified both abilities as prime candidates for the champion update team’s efforts. Basically, we’re fine with Shen engaging in extended one-on-one duels, but we want those fights to be a bunch more engaging and skill-based than they were.

We wanted to give Shen and his opponent more things to do and think about during each game.

So how’re his new abilities different? Well, his new Q - Twilight Assault - completely changes how and when Shen wants to fight. He’s purely melee now, obviously, so can’t bully or last-hit from range. Instead, he’s all about positioning, maneuvering around his opponent so his Q casts pull his spirit blade through his enemy. His opponent wants that to not happen, obviously, resulting in the two tangoing around their lane for positional advantage. Shen can force the issue by Shadow Dashing in, landing the taunt, then pulling the spirit blade through. This gives him a pretty big boost to his damage, and opens up Spirit's Refuge to parry his opponent’s reply. His new W has serious implications in teamfights, too, giving his entire team the means to dodge incoming basic attacks. Again, this all requires positional smarts, and the ability’s cooldown means he’ll only really get one shot with it per late-game fight. It’s a strong ability, basically, but only when it’s used properly. Finally, Shen’s new passive shield is a key part of the big man’s repertoire, particularly come late game. Past level 16, his shield literally has no cooldown when he lands his abilities on other champions, meaning smart and dextrous Shen players get to morph into mighty unkillable supertanks.

Shen’s all about positioning, maneuvering around his opponent so his Q casts pull his spirit blade through his enemy.

That’s about it for Shen’s changes. We’re kicking out a couple of his old abilities and replacing them with more interesting tools that should give him clearer goals during each game. At the same time, we’re brushing up his visuals, refitting him with a new model and better particle effects across the board. So jump onto the PBE now and let us know your thoughts on Shen’s new kit. We’ll shadow dash back in a couple of weeks for the big guy’s release!

WHY DOES SURGEON SHEN HAVE CROCS??

Quibli1/13/2016, 10:00:41 PM159 votes

Shen is one of those champions that I feel was masterfully crafted to be a top laner with some of the coolest unnoticed interactions in the game IMHO. I doubt many people know that having your shield [W] up will reduce the cooldown of your passive by 2 seconds every auto attack instead of one. I am sad to see him go and I don't understand why he needed to be updated. Heavily under appreciated champion.

To clarify Spirit Blade idle behavior:

  • Spawns next to you at game start and respawn
  • Despawns on death
  • Snaps to your position when using any global teleport (Shen ult, recall, Tahm ult, etc.)
  • Snaps towards you (but still pretty far away) if you move very far from it (talking off-screen distances here--keeps Q cast times manageable without affecting on-screen play)
  • Q turns it into a homing missile towards you, and it lands on the ground when it reaches you

Maybe I'm just a hater here, but I greatly dislike this rework. All I see is riot messing with perfectly functional, good champions. There are many dysfunctional champions with "generic," abilities that they could just as well work on, but they chose not to. What's more, they are adding in more and more spells with little to no counter play. Shen's new w and Tahms w, are prime examples of this. This new w, pretty much counters all adcs in the game, where as Tahms counters a heaping majority of single target cc. This is a worrying trend in my opinion.

CyberSecs1/13/2016, 8:56:46 PM124 votes

Dear rioters, I hope one of your reads this, simply for a brainstorming here.

I dislike the fact that this shen has ZERO reliable poke and ranged farm, or lifesteal/sustain. When you create overpowered champions like Ravioli in the top lane, shen is GARANTEED to lose lane almost always now, and if he does, he can't safely farm/poke anymore. He will be reduced to begging for laning phase to finish (lose a tower) just to get some farm without getting fully bursted.

This also killed the marked/sustain that was very important to him. Especially when his blade position is barely controllable, and relies mostly on aggressive positioning to get the blade on a pathway to proc its effects.

I think that his Q needed to have two parts (and mark my words, it will be fixed to this one day): Q (first press): throws the blade towards a TARGETED enemy, but deals NO DAMAGE to champions. The blade lands behind the target. Mark all enemies it passes through them. Q (second press) : SNAP the blade back towards you. If an enemy champion is hit by the returning blade, apply the Q stuff you posted here. IF the enemy CHAMPION was marked when hit by the blade, then apply the second part of the Q stuff you mentioned in this post AND allies gain X health on hit on marked enemies for Y seconds. (similar to the live shen's Q).

Why? Because shen needs sustain at least early game. You can apply part of the things i mentioned to his underwhelming passive instead of his Q btw. But I'm pointing this out after talking to some people who mastered shen.

Another thought would be to make the W move the blade to target location before applying dodge, but that would be very confusing for ori players.

I did not see this coming. It appeared liked a Ninja.

What the hell... Shen gets an update? SHEN?!?

You need to seriously reevaluate your priorities Riot. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Shen; meanwhile, there are tons of unbalanced champions and outdated kits that desperately need updates/fixes.

Get it together.

Hey listen, Riot. I know you have 1000 employees but judging by this update not a single one of you has ever heard this before so I'm going to let you in on a little knowledge the rest of the world knows which may help you in the future. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You're welcome.

Mrfckles1/13/2016, 7:18:29 PM105 votes

That Q rework is bad imo. He is gonna get harassed like crazy and have next to no cs. Shen might be tank but he has no sustain! Pre 6 is gonna be scary.

Why? Shen is great the way he is. I main him and this kinda upsets me.

ŽeroGravity1/13/2016, 9:52:57 PM70 votes

@ Riot!...Vorpal Blade as is... Is key for Shen...It plays a big role for support/top/and jungle...By removing Vorpal Blade Riot is limiting Shen's potential...Shen/support/Vorpal Blade allows Shen to poke and dash to get in and out along with getting that ks if the opponent use's their turret as a shield and the ADC is unable to finish the job...Shen/Top with out Vorpal Blade Shen is useless top lane he lacks true DMG/attack power... although the new dash does dmg it forces him to dash forward leaving him open to take more dmg meaning he will not be able to kite/hold a lane alone forcing him to be stuck in the world of support...Shen/Jungle may be helpful as the new Shen but vorpal blade gave him the ability to kite minion's along with opponents...Riot should keep vorpal blade as it is... It's bad enough that Shen isn't played as much as he used to be played...Now you are taking top lane from him and slowing his jungle game... LOL has plenty of support tanks...But Shen isn't just a tank/support in his current stat his also a warrior..."RIOT HAS ALREADY FAILED WITH THE LAST 2 NEW HERO'S STOP DESTROYING OLD ONES!" IF ITS NOT BROKE DON'T FIX IT...

This legitimately pisses me off as a Shen main. I have 100k mastery with Shen, and I've been playing him frequently since S1.

The change to Q is going to push him out of toplane even more, on paper it might look like that Q+W is going to do something meaningful in trades - but it only blocks basic attacks, but that's not going to exclude empowered attacks or on hit effects as those will still go through from what I understand.

Here's the gist of it:

  • Shen can't poke anymore
  • Becomes a toplaner with a W that is situational and wont block any kind of damage like it used to, instead it blocks only basic attacks - and yeah it helps allies, ok... so what how does that help the laning phase as a top laner are we trying to push him into a support role?
  • New passive means he deals less damage overall, as late game tanky shen could do a good chunk with a single, now he needs to hit multiple times to do damage consistently...
  • Loss of sustain from Q in trades.

This doesn't seem like a fix to the champion, it seems like the next 'olafed' iteration courtesy of Riot games.

With all the mobility creep in the current state of the game, he was in a rough spot as it is but you could make it work with the current Q & W.

Your Used Tampon1/13/2016, 10:35:47 PM60 votes

Please Riot. I know you don't listen to your players when it comes to things like this, but i really dont want you to rework shen.

Shen's kit is simple AND THAT'S OKAY! Not every champion needs complicated mechanics or big playmaking moves. Not every champion needs to be interesting...

There has to be room for the "niche" champions - the simple champions who are always there when you need them. With simple mechanics and simple abilities, but a lot to offer - shen is a perfect example of this kind of champion. A targeted damage dealing ability with sustain, a small shield, a dash with some nice cc and an ultimate to help the team out. He doesnt need more...

Furthermore i think what you have done with his Q is absolutely disgusting. It is counter intuitive. That and he no longer has any sustain, which was a big part of shen for me... Oh, and surprise surprise - you gave him a fucking 3-hit passive.

If you absolutely had to change something about him, it should only be his W, but even then i feel it's too much.

Please Riot, stop changing champions we love and just make new ones instead.

RIP Shen 2010 - 2016

Can Blood Moon Shen have red particles? All the other blood moon skins do and it would be really fitting, imho.

crabface51/13/2016, 7:35:00 PM52 votes

Personally, I like Shen how he is rn. I have the feeling this will weaken Shen support. His q really helps in most stages of the game. The shield, though, should be reworked. I don't like any of this percent health nonsense. I mean, really? I feel like it makes him a little like a top lane melee Vayne. Glad they still have the ult and w relatively the same though. Just keep everything, but fix his w. I do like the fact that it blocks auto attacks. It would make laning against attack speed adcs a lot better. Debate with me though, what's everyone else's thoughts?

Walks up to surgeon Shen WHAT ARE THOSEEEEE!?!?!?item 3671 item 3240

Kittase1/13/2016, 10:34:47 PM40 votes

I can honestly say that I'm not a fan of this change. I feel like Shen's core mechanic was a tanky bruiser with a lot of sustain early game. The kit synergized really well--your passive cooled down faster by attacking things (doubly so with your shield up), you could trade when you used Q to harass, but you had the ability to farm minions as well.

The new Shen isn't going to have any of that. You're going to have a blade you need to keep track of which has a very long range. Your sustain is baked into your new passive--a shield that triggers on abilities. So that's nearly entirely pointless with your W (since you'll be immune to auto-attacks anyway). You are going to get more damage with the new Q, but if you were taking Shen on your team it's because you needed a brick with a taunt, not a damage threat. None of these abilities are going to give Shen any real staying power in lane.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I liked Shen because he had great sustain in top-lane. I could out-last virtually any opponent and wear them down. Mid-game, I have the ability to make an engage or turn a skirmish around into a kill. Late-game, I'm a front-line force that's making engages or peeling effectively for my ADC. These changes seem like you're taking those core mechanics away, and replacing them with a knock-off ball spirit blade.

Why change Shen? He's perfect the way he is.

KetiaX1/13/2016, 10:22:21 PM29 votes

Insanely disappointing. No sign of him being an actual ninja. Spirit Blade practically does nothing since he's obviously more built as a supportive tank. Dodge mechanics work NOTHING like an actual ninja would dodge things. All in all, this update changes nothing, Shen will probably still be that champion that's either broken as fck because of his base stats, or useless as fck because of his base stats.

Oh, and he looks more like a Samurai than a Ninja now. Another thing that makes me feel disappointed. This update is a massive failure in my book. But who cares, right?
