More than Game Music: Making Warsongs

Riot··2 votes·42,070 views

Music has the power to tell incredible stories, and we’ve always been interested in finding new and exciting opportunities that harness this power. Smite and Ignite was a celebration of all things metal. DJ Sona was our way of exploring music that impacts gameplay (and vice-versa). So when we finished work on The Music of League of Legends, Vol 1. and started thinking about our next project, we knew we wanted to go big.

Riot Records, our internal name for “the team that does album stuff,” had just the idea: an album that could serve as the soundtrack to the 2016 ranked season.

Playlist origins

Warsongs is meant to be music that amps players up for League and puts them in the ladder-climbing mindset. Riot Records producer Tyler Eltringham explains its origin: “We released a metal album, and a soundtrack. So then everyone started thinking, ‘Okay, what next? What’s the next big idea?’” Those conversations took the the team toward the idea of an album designed to evoke a feeling of competitiveness and forward momentum. “What, we asked, would inspire players to push harder, to queue again?”

...Riot Records actively looks for musicians who love games and can find inspiration in League for these cool collaborations.

Electronic music felt like the natural choice, both because of its popularity in the League community and because of the number of EDM artists with close ties to games and gaming culture. “We’ve seen so many streamers listening to EDM while they stream,” says Eltringham, “and we knew there were tons of artists in EDM who are either huge League fans or huge gamers. It already feels like a natural part of the game.”

Dev manager Toa Dunn adds, “A lot of EDM musicians trace their influences back to hearing music in games—it seemed cool to have it all loop back around on itself this way.”

“Besides, part of what makes Riot Records unique as a team,” says Eltringham, “is that most of the effort is focused on finding people to work with externally. We have amazing in-house composers working on music for the game, but Riot Records actively looks for musicians who love games and can find inspiration in League for these cool collaborations.”

With the genre decided, the Riot Records team was ready to move into production.

For games, but not for a game

The team started by building a list of potential artists for the project. Says Dunn, “It was basically a blue-sky collection of people we’d love to work with.” From there, the team vetted each artist based on their gamer creds, musical style, and understanding of the project. Dunn says that the team asked questions like: “Do they play League, are they part of gaming culture, do they ‘get’ the League community? Will this person be accessible, and does it feel like an authentic fit?”

What would be the point if artists were forced to match some sound the team imagined? It would be an insane waste of talent and probably would limit the album, quality-wise.

Eltringham emphasizes the importance of finding artists with genuine connections to gaming, saying, “It wasn’t about finding big names for the big names. It had to be musicians who really connected to what Warsongs was trying to do, who had a sense of ‘This is how music gets me excited and hyped when I play games I love.’” The team also placed a big emphasis on the idea of variety—with “EDM” being more of an umbrella term than an actual genre, it was important that Warsongs run the stylistic gamut from big room anthems to dirtier dubstep, progressive house, and more. “Good gaming music to one person might be the opposite to another,” says Dunn, “so the team focused on sound diversity within the album.”

The Riot Records team also stresses the importance of letting each artist’s sound shine through in their tracks. “It was tricky,” says Dunn. “A lot of artists are used to working with companies who are like, ‘Take this and make a video game song.’ That wasn’t the goal here.” Artists needed to take the core idea and run with it for Warsongs to hit its full potential.

"What would be the point if artists were forced to match some sound the team imagined?" Eltringham adds. "It would be an insane waste of talent and probably would limit the album, quality-wise.”

Getting hype

Riot Records designed Warsongs from its foundation to be something that exists outside of League while still being inextricably connected to it. “It would be so cool if players take the album and bring it outside of the game, to their workouts or wherever they need to feel amped,” Eltringham says, “and to have this very League thing end up in places far beyond a second monitor or tab.” Riot Records, as a team, is just hopeful that players like the album as much as they do, and that it provides players the extra energy they need to climb the ranked ladder.

“If you go to a basketball game, you hear jock jams, right? Those songs say, ‘It’s game time.’ Hopefully, Warsongs can be that for League—fuel for the fire,” says Dunn.

@Riot - You should make an in game client that will let us create a soundtrack to our adventures, and add these to the in game music.

Illiad9 votes

sounds like something a 3rd party app would add on

S H A Y C 019 votes

maybe, but it needs to have in game menu functions for selecting playlist and skipping tracks.

I feel as though your previous comment was well enough, but with your new statement it provokes the thought of "Why not just put on an internet radio station, or listen to an album you have at home?"

I imagine that a toggle in the settings interface, that you could choose a preferred genre of music to have in game, or in champion select, would suffice (not to say this idea is the only thing I want from LoL or to sound like a needy ass hole, I'm just responding to ideas with ideas) many peoples wants from the music. For instance, I would toggle on metal music from Riot Records for my game play, and a good friend of mine would probably choose the EDM or whatever it's called. (Dubstep? I digress.)

Well, here's my input on such things.

The thing is ,Riot has a bunch of music that gets us pumped up and is tied to league, tied to worlds, tied to xpeke backdoors, champion reveals and tons of epic league events. This stuff should be in the client. Secondly, its not too demanding on the pc but you still have to have a second application running, which splits your resources, and adds volume control complications. The client is already playing music, the resources are already in use. Just put more music files and let us control which ones play.

if you play Teemo , you must listen to where the hood at by dmx, on repeat until you win a game

Try overwolf. It has an app called 8Tracks, you can select and switch your music without even minimizing the league client, in game our out. It's free :)

Too many copyright issues if it's to add any music, what they could do though is create a playlist menu option that includes all music produced by Riot, where you can pick however many you like and those get added randomly to the in game music rotation.

S H A Y C 02 votes

Id be fine with that. there is a lot of amazing music riot has the rights to, this new playlist for example, the sona tracks, and any other music theyve done for champ load screens...it would be refreshing.

AttackOnPaopu2 votes

I agree with all the songs they've made and loading screen songs, but not the Sona tracks. It would kinda make having the skin in game kinda pointless.

gothic5o3 votes

no they wont get any copy right problems because they aint claiming the song as their own and the songs we can play or riot lets us listen too it would be only to listin to as an audio track

40Grit JMcAfreak3 votes

You don't have to claim a song as your own to be infringing copyright. Just the simple use of the song without permission would be copyright infringement. I'd also like to mention that all songs are "audio tracks."

mUyQWcmx5o2 votes

Thats a pretty good way to lose elo lol, I dont think there could be any way to implement that without people being distracted from the game.

gothic5o3 votes

riot should let us add our own soundtracks so it could make our game more interesting and to add a button to let which teamate listen in like the mute mute button...

Dravener10 votes

Logged in just to upvote. They should indeed do this with the Pentakill album and the other albums they made. But as others said, not the Sona music of course. What advantage would we get for having the skin if we could just listen to it everytime.

Knowing that riot has released a soundtrack to fit the mood of intense ranked matches...it fills you with determination.

The back-foundation music creates throughout the world and in games and other media is often forgotten or overlooked but, its effects as the starting point of feeling and emotions for a user are astronomical. You all at Riot Records do a amazing job with your music, and in a surprisingly short amount of time. As someone who used to be a musician I hope project like these keep happening and you seek to fulfill them to the best you can. Cheers!

All the music done by Riot is fantastic. Whoever makes all this happen is doing an awesome job. I'm a very critical musician but am constantly impressed by Riot's music--especially the login screens. Kindred's was A+. Keep up the good work!

that link is a troll leading back to this page

Whiffle Ball Bat6 votes

Actually, it isn't a troll. The link was intercepted by Riot's unsafe link filter... however the text of the url is fine if you cut and paste it into your browser. Soundcloud is a fairly well known music site, and the soundtracks are there.

I love this, keep us posted on which EDM artists make music please? (Will Sparks, Bang La Decks, Timmy Trumpet, etc.) Keep it up riot, I know an increasing amount of people get on you about how you are updating the game. But they haven't been in your shoes and don't realize how stressful it is to keep up on a game that is INTERNATIONAL and can't summoner 4 From one point to another.

It would have been cool to integrate these with DJ Sona as like song packs, but oh well

I MEAN SPOTIFY

steelerspengo1 votes

The page where they have the music has the Spotify logo there in addition to other platforms like soundcloud, so one would assume it would be on Spotify. But I am sad for I cannot find it.

RiotTummers5 votes

It will be on Spotify! Just takes a couple of days for stuff to pop up everywhere.

Jikosei2 votes

Ah, okay cool, no wonder I couldn't find it on Spotify.

  1. Maybe you could collaborate with monstercat and nocopyrightsounds. As many league players tend to favor their music. In addition if you someone wanted to they could switch between settings if they liked the more traditional league of Legends sound track with an optional 2 provided by going into the general settings depending on if they were in a mood to play a bit more risky and pumped or a bit more calm, and for those individuals who have ever received a pentakill in a Ranked scenario they would be honored with the pentakill theme song as so many of those who have responded in your chat have though that including the pentakill theme song would be a great idea. Anyway I hope something spectacular happens and you could take my comments into consideration
RiotTummers2 votes

Hey guys! I'm kind of a dummy and didn't realize this might be the first thing people see about Warsongs! If that's the case, here's the link for the actual reveal and download: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/site/warsongs/
