As someone who plays this game for leisure and fun, not really as much for the competitive aspect I am SO EXCITED for this. For the collectors and the "completionists" out there, it will be a game within the game to "master" each champion. Although I understand people's concerns with the word mastery being a slight misnomer given that it isn't entirely correlated with being "good" at a champion, I think this adds a ton of fun to the game by providing new goals for long time players. +1 Riot!

Very similar feelings here. I am not a Ranked person, but I would like to earn mastery on some of my favourite/best champions and this gives me a goal to aim for. My PvP isn't just for fun anymore, it's also going to have a purpose and I'll get better all the while.

even a ranked player, for those that are struggling to gain that division, this is some small reward they can achieve. like a consolation prize or something, plus its just really cool you get extra swag when you load in :P

People think Riot is only there to make money off of us, but that is untrue, they give us a ftp game and spend so much of their time and money to make this game ever changing, and allowing us to better see our own skills with the champs we love most. I spend a lot of time watching both my wins and losses to see my strong points and weaknesses so that i can be better at a champion. The match history with all of its many options and now this will help me as well. +1 Riot indeed!

I hope Riot acutcally does like skin unlocks to if you master a champion. That would motivate alot of people to try there best in learning the champ.

Asgardianknight3 votes

Riot games will not be making that idea into reality anytime. Remember Skin = $$ for them. And them skin for champs are making them money

CLTheBearsFan2 votes

but then again it doesnt have to be a super cool skin jsut something as a rewards maybe no even a skin like a call out or something of that sort

I like the idea of getting the champion icon as a mastery reward, you could show of your main or favorite champion while playing someone else. Other than that I absolutely love this idea, I used to play games as a completion-est and this would bring that idea into League. Gives ADC mains another reason to play top or mid to get a "full" experience of this game. Only issue I've seen is how the mastery icon pops up above the champions head, distracting or is that just me?

Tr13ky1 votes

They should give you a skin if you master a certain number of champs like if u mastered 20 u get a Garen skin or something

Panda Protector6 votes

what if when we reached max mastery level, we got the champion portrait as a summoners icon? i think that would be pretty cool. (ex.: this would be the sumoners icon for max leona mastery Leona )

John3yFlame5 votes

First of all the rewards should be a summoner Icon when fully ranked and some extra Influence points with an un mastered champion. After all champions have been mastered one free skin of your choice. Also it would be cool after you mastered say all ADC or Marksman classes you get a marksman border around your champion in loading screen and you can filter through all your borders you have unlocked.

I wonder if you do bad as a certain champion a bunch of games in a row if you will lose mastery points or something?

Underestimated1 votes

On the initial announcement, Riot Socrates said this in the comments:

There are no demotions planned currently. This isn't intended to be a ranked system in the same sense as leagues. The grading system does give players an idea of how they are improving with a champion via the per game performance evaluation. Also, performance and winning or losing does dramatically affect gains, so a high performing player will unlock rewards much more quickly.

S H A Y C 03 votes

i think its possible to master a champion and suck at league at the same time. knowing every little thing about a champion, what he can do, what he cant do, ability interactions, etc. Does not mean you know that wards are really important, at which point on the map is officially "overextending" what defines map control....the list goes on. So i dont think its even necessary to lose points for anything. As he said, if you suck bad with a champ you will gain very little, if you wreck face then you will max that champ mastery banner super quick.

This is some thing that riot has taken from another moba called SMITE it may be a shitty moba doesn't mean you steal an idea...

tdog217 votes

except smite gives out different rewards, and i don't think that just because they implement a similar feature that it's stealing, that's like saying that after one car company implemented air bags, all the others are stealing that idea, not you know realizing that it's a good bloody idea

I'm completely excited for this. Even though I don't like to play ranked, It's going to be great. Does this mastery update by playing normal games as well? Or is it just for ranked. I hope its for both so you can first simply play normal and when you master the champion, you can totally play ranked to crush people. and the fact that we're going to get Icons for mastered champions gets you confidence and also the enemies will show some kind of caution "he has the LeeSin icon, be safe people".

+69 to Rito Games for this. I'm going to test this on PBE for now =D

So How many games/wins does it take to master champion?

RawrGoesPandaAM2 votes

It would be cool as an reward to have the icon of your favorite champ that you mastered! RITO PLEASE! :3

Stereoraptor1 votes

This is clearly an interesting concept, but I still am confused. Will you or will you not view our games? Or will you use variables on game performance? Or maybe knows their way around the spells and builds for the champion? Or merely win rate?

Jarude2272 votes

Riot will definitely NOT be viewing each game. League of legends has over 27 million active players each day, that's 2.7 million games per day. If each game lasted 30 minutes long and Riot's employees worked 24 hours a day, 24 hours/30 minutes per game = 48, 2.7 million/48 game per employee = 56,250 employees. Let's say that each employee worked at Riot in California and was each payed minimum wage, 56,250 * $9 * 24 hours in a day= $12,150,000. It would cost Riot over 12 million dollars a day for them to watch and rate each player's match. This is paying them minimum wage and having them work 24 hours a day without medical.

so i lose all my masteries and have to get to lvl 30 again with all champions? i feel this is a step backward. im not sure this is at all a good thing but i have a few questions that i would like answers to so i have a better opinion.

  1. do all current masteries reset?
  2. why was this idea created?
  3. are there other rewards for leveling a champ besides the emote and the masteries?
  4. why do i lose mastery points if im level 30 but my champs not?
Siachi3 votes

I feel like you may be confusing Masteries (like 21-9-0 stuff) with this. Though I guess they use the same name, so it's a bit understandable.

Maybe a better way to describe the new system would be "Champion Skill Tracker"

I'm pretty 100% certain this has Absolutely nothing to do with your mastery pages or summoner level or anything like that: I think it just says "Hey, here's how well you're doing with this particular champion" and nothing else, with purely cosmetic rewards (As opposed to mastery pages, which DO affect gameplay a bit).

So you don't have to 'level up' a champion to make them stronger or to access mastery pages or anything like that.

It's just a way to say "You're doing this well with this champion."
