Patch 9.17 notes

Riot·8/27/2019, 6:00:22 PM·3 votes·171,542 views

Hey buff herders!

We're still holding off on going too crazy with balance changes until after 9.19 (the patch that Worlds will be played on), but we do have some bigger adjustments to Aurelion Sol and Kayle this patch. Mainly, we're helping them in the respective spaces they're weak in and that make them difficult to be seen as viable or reliable picks. Overall, Aurelion Sol should now be more comprehensible with more satisfying signs of successful play and Kayle should have more of a laning phase without feeling like a complete wet noodle.

That's all folks!

Mid-Patch Updates

Collection Changes

To be more consistent across all the places that showcase our amazing champion art and to ensure space for future additional details in the Champions tab, we made changes to Collection, which you may have noticed. We're outlining the changes below for your reference, including some bugfixes.

We also added an in-game stat panel button and a Progression tab in Collection that would have allowed players to check their Eternals progress in game. However, we're disabling this button and the tab until the feature is live. Keeping the button and the tab in the live client helps us enable it in PBE though, so head on over there to test the latest and greatest on Eternals and give us feedback!
IN-GAME UI DISABLE The in-game stat panel button that will allow players to check their Eternals progress during a game has been disabled
PROGRESSION DISABLE The Progression tab under Collection that will allow players to check their Eternals and Champion Mastery progress on the client has been disabled

Collection

PORTRAIT SIZE Champions' portraits are now larger and matches what's shown in the loading screen and Skins tab more closely, with some space for additional information in the future
MASTERY CHEST BORDER REPLACEMENT Champion portraits no longer have a gold border to indicate that a Mastery Chest was earned on that champion for the season. Now, portraits will have a loot chest icon, matching what's in the champion tooltip
FILTER OPTIONS Champions are now viewable in groups by different categories, including most popular position, similar to Champion Select
BLANK CHAMPION BUGFIX Blank champion portraits, labeled "None", are no longer showing up in the Champions tab
MASTERY BUGFIX Mastery levels are properly showing on the champion portraits in the Champions tab
TEXT BUGFIX Fixed some text on the Champion tab and Collection so that they do not incorrectly wrap to the next line

Champions

Aurelion Sol

Passive damage decreased; AP ratio now flat; stars are no longer disabled by CC. Q cooldown now scales; movement speed increased; star will keep up with Aurelion Sol. W now expands stars and rotates at a decaying speed; cooldown increased early, decreased late; cost no longer increases over time. E passive movement speed removed; range and cooldown increased; speed now scales.

We're making Aurelion Sol more vulnerable to counterplay in the early game so that we have room to buff his scaling and presence in the late game. His adjusted W should also help make him a more approachable champion to those new to him, with clearer indicators of success and more satisfying in-game payoff.

Passive - Center of the Universe

DAMAGE 20/23/26/29/32/35/40/45/50/55/
60/70/80/90/100/110/120/130

MOVEMENT SPEED 10% 20%
newCATCH ME CATCH YOU If Aurelion Sol is faster than his star, the star will speed up to keep up with him

W - Celestial Expansion

newLET IT RIP When Aurelion Sol pushes his stars out to the Outer Limit, they gain increased damage and rotate at a high, but decaying speed. After 3 seconds or if Aurelion Sol reactivates it early, the stars will retract and grant Aurelion Sol 40% movement speed, decaying over 1.5 seconds
COOLDOWN 6/5.5/5/4.5/4 seconds 8/6.5/5/3.5/2 seconds
MANA 40 mana + 22/24/26/28/30 mana per second it's activated 70/80/90/100/110 mana on cast

SPEED 600 600/650/700/750/800

Galio

Q cooldown decreased. W min and max damage increased.

Galio's been underperforming for the last few patches so we're helping him out to keep him competitive against other choices.

Base Stats

Rounding out an unnecessarily gross number

MANA REGEN 9.335 9.5

Q - Winds of War

COOLDOWN 14/13/12/11/10 seconds 12/11.5/11/10.5/10 seconds

MAXIMUM DAMAGE 30/60/90/120/150 60/105/150/195/240

Kalista

Base attack damage, mana, and mana growth increased.

Buffing Kalista in this specific way so she can succeed more in the hands of an average player and generally in a wider range of games.

Base Stats

ATTACK DAMAGE 67 69
MANA 231.8 250
MANA GROWTH 35 45

Kayle

Passive bonuses adjusted for all four forms. Q now refunds mana; cast delay, missile speed, and range decreased; cast time updated; enemy shred decreased, but duration increased. E bonus damage decreased later, ratio increased; on-hit ratio updated. R cost now scales; radius increased.

We're shifting power into Kayle's early game at the cost of some of her late-game carry potential. Kayle should still be a weaker champion early who ascends into a god, but she (and her opponents) should now have more influence on whether or not she gets there.

Passive - Divine Ascent

FORM LEVEL ORDER Kayle ascends to her Aflame form at level 6 and Arisen form at level 11 Arisen form at level 6 and Aflame form at level 11
ZEALOUS BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED 15% when Exalted and moving toward enemies 8% when Exalted in all directions

RANGE 950 900
RESISTANCES REDUCTION 20% of the target's armor and magic resistance for 3 seconds 15% of the target's armor and magic resistance for 4 seconds
BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Radiant Blast wouldn't pierce as far if it hit its target at point-blank range

E - Starfire Spellblade

BONUS MAGIC DAMAGE 8/10/12/14/16% (+1% per 100 ability power) of the target's missing health 8/9/10/11/12% (+1% per 50 ability power) of the target's missing health
ON-HIT RATIO 0.1 total attack damage and 0.2 ability power 0.1 bonus attack damage and 0.25 ability power

R - Divine Judgment

COST 100 mana 100/50/0 mana
AoE RADIUS 475 500

Leona

Q cooldown decreased.

We're letting Leona really lock into the engaging supports that she fares well against to keep her a good counter against those specific match-ups.

Q - Shield of Daybreak

COOLDOWN 6 seconds 5 seconds

Lucian

Base AD increased.

Giving Lucian a bit more power in the early laning phase to punish champs who have been able to run around freely without fear.

Base Stats

ATTACK DAMAGE 61 64

Neeko

Neeko can now deactivate her passive without taking damage or casting another ability.

Giving Neeko a QoL change so she can return to her own form without having to expend a resource or take damage.

Passive - Inherent Glamour

newI'M BEAUTIFUL When disguised, Neeko can select herself to deactivate her disguise, putting it on a 2 second cooldown

Pantheon

Q Thrusts now grant execute damage. E monster damage reduction removed.

Even after the removal and decrease of the monster damage reduction on his Q and E, respectively, jungle Pantheon is just not as strong as his other roles. We're following up by entirely removing the monster damage penalty on his E, since it appears we were being too cautious regarding his jungle prowess. This and the change to his Q Thrust shouldn't swing his balance too much, and only help those who are struggling with relearning him.

Q - Comet Spear

newTHRUST DAMAGE Thrusting Pantheon's spear (releasing the ability within 0.35 seconds) now also increases the physical damage on targets below 25% of their maximum health (matching a fully hurled spear's bonus damage)

E - Aegis Assault

removedMONSTER DAMAGE REDUCTION No longer reduces damage against non-epic monsters

Qiyana

E base damage decreased. R cooldown flattened.

Qiyana's early trade damage makes her stronger than she should be in lane. That coupled with her near constant ults later is a bit too overbearing throughout the whole game.

E - Audacity

BASE DAMAGE 70/105/140/175/210 60/95/130/165/200

R - Supreme Display of Talent

COOLDOWN 120/100/80 seconds 120 seconds at all ranks

Ryze

Base magic resist increased.

Now that Ryze has proven he can be useful without Overloading his enemies in competitive play, we think it's safe to give him a smidge more survivability.

Base Stats

MAGIC RESIST 30 34

Zyra

R cost flattened; cooldown decreased.

We're giving Zyra more opportunities to burst down her enemies.

R - Stranglethorns

COST 100/120/140 mana 100 mana at all ranks
COOLDOWN 130/120/110 seconds 110/100/90 seconds

Free-to-Play Champion Rotation

In 2017, players asked us to expand the weekly free champion rotation beyond just 10 champions. As a result, we updated our model to include 10% of the total number of available champions to the rotation and increased the number to 14. With Qiyana, we're officially at 145 champions! As promised, we're officially increasing the number of champions to 15 in the next free-to-play rotation on the first week of September 2019.

Bugfixes

  • Soraka now properly heals herself with R - Wish for more when she is under 40% of her maximum health.
  • Certain champions' movement abilities are now properly disabled when they're Grounded (Zac's E - Elastic Slingshot, Malphite's R - Unstoppable Force, Camille's E - Hookshot, Graves' R - Collateral Damage, Thresh's W - Dark Passage, and Fiddlestick's R - Crowstorm)
  • Rek'Sai no longer gains a short "Can't Be Displaced" buff if her target dies as she starts R - Void Rush
  • Cleanse now properly clears the stun from Viktor's AUGMENT:IMPLOSION W - Gravity Field
  • Lee Sin's Q - Resonating Strike's dash speed is now at its proper speed (not as slow as it was in 9.16)
  • If Sylas dies immediately after casting Pantheon's R - Grand Starfall via R - Hijack, he will no longer be locked out of using items and basic abilities
  • Sivir's W - Ricochet now properly bounces when recast when she reaches 45% CDR by holding Spear of Shojin or Cosmic Insight
  • Statikk Shiv will no longer hit nearby targets outside of Mordekaiser's R - Realm of Death when the holder attacks him within it
  • When Tahm Kench dies while using W - Devour on another unit, that unit's HP can now properly go below 1 HP

I'm not sure if anyone has ever brought this up, but when I check my scoreboard in game I like to have it mirrored (Top -Top, Mid - Mid, etc.) The only feature that doesn't allow that is the teammate bubbles that are either on the side of your screen or above your mini map.

It would be a cool idea to have the teammate bubbles mirrored so that players can see who is dead. For example, if the enemy jungler and top get killed, their grayed out icon should be mirrored above the allied jungler and top laner. Just a thought, it would be a really cool feature to have!

Best Veigar FL8/27/2019, 6:33:16 PM74 votes

Galio has been under preforming? I wonder why. Maybe it's because nobody has any idea on the balance team if they want him to be a tank, a glass canon mage, a bruiser, or an anti tank while randomly buffing or nerfing him based on whatever role people are trying to get to work in esports. Just choose one thing and stick with it or just revert him. Cause at this point it seems like a revert would be the best thing for him over seeing him being forced into whatever someone is feeling at the time.

Jabalor8/27/2019, 6:17:52 PM73 votes

Welp guess no matter how much feedback Aurelion Sol mains gave to you, you still went into with the changes. Changing him to be a more popular instead of the dedicated few is just going to create a Skarner 2.0

Tátsu8/27/2019, 6:37:39 PM54 votes

No Asol main wanted this..........

mrmeddyman8/27/2019, 10:57:14 PM41 votes

Aurelio. Sol changes are really bad. Why create unique champions just to remove their niche. He was one of the coolest designs in all of MOBAs. Now he's just another burst mage

oh hey ahri, i see you're getting your 50th skin

Love how they cancelled 2 buffs but won't cancel the shitty Aurelion rework THAT HE DID NOT NEED.

IM Trogdor8/27/2019, 10:12:58 PM31 votes

It's been real, Space Dragon, but I'm dropping you. Those changes are horrid, a massive gutting and an overall nerf to just about everything interesting about Aurelion Sol.

Warped Artist8/27/2019, 10:47:35 PM28 votes

RIP Aurelion Sol

You will be missed.

panicathebedroom8/28/2019, 5:27:23 AM27 votes

It's a shame that Aurelion Sol has such a beautiful design, just for Riot Games to hate the champion

Rip asol, one of few reasons i kept playing after 9 years

SOOOOOOO.... why didnt IVERN get an ELDERWOOD SKIN?!?!? isnt he a..... TREE!!!!!??????

Sąkurajima Mai8/28/2019, 8:01:41 AM22 votes

I never comment here because I just like to take the changes as they come, but these Aurelian Sol changes are just awful. You guys actually managed to ruin one of the most interesting and unique kits in the game just because he’s not a popular champion. These changes won’t make him popular and on top of that you guys just killed the existing fan base. What’s the point in creating a unique champion if you plan to remove what makes them unique in the first place. I’m genuinely horrified by the lack of thought that went into these changes and really feel these need to be reverted.

DngrNudl8/28/2019, 3:02:55 AM21 votes

Rito, please listen to ASol players. Revert these changes. (except the e range, that's helpful)

Niklas Kronwall8/28/2019, 10:34:28 AM20 votes

I just want to say as an Aurelion Sol main, Riot never really cared for us the Aurelion player base. You heard out pleas to not continue with this change. Most of us in the niche fan base will probably quit out right or just not play Asol at all. You took away our GLP then you took our base stats and continued to nerf his ability stats. After all this you had the gal to ask "Why is he not popular" He's high risk low reward after your changes. Yes he's a roamer at heart, but if a jungler can keep rivers warded, it's the easiest way to counter him. I loved this champion and I will continue to love it, but the love is the same as loving an ex. The memory is there, but it's different.

My fellow summoners, I will bid you farewell and hope you do well on the rift.

Walnutter8/28/2019, 4:18:58 AM19 votes

How does it feel that you just destroyed a fun and unique champ to play and now he is complete and utter garbage now. Great job. Rip Aurelion Sol.

Meepaboo8/27/2019, 11:57:32 PM18 votes

WHY THE HELL ARE AURELION'S ORBS SO MANA COSTLY?! seriously, you guys must hate him. smh

KMS Cyrekt8/27/2019, 6:53:39 PM17 votes

I like the free rotation change

Stexe8/27/2019, 6:15:59 PM14 votes

So... any comment on the lack of focus on keeping some promises that Riot had from years ago? What about bugs that mess up cosmetics and skin borders that haven't been addressed for years? Sending in comments to Player Support gets the "we can't do anything and can't escalate it to anyone who can" response.

How do we actually get these things fixed? Who do we contact and what can be done? Seems like there's no answer for this stuff... and it seems like Riot doesn't care since it is impacting such a small number of people. But we still paid money for this stuff, like the special borders, and yet we don't get them... =/

Vhozek8/28/2019, 2:59:30 PM14 votes

I don't even play Aurelion Sol but you guys ruined him for the people that do. It's okay for a champ to be unpopular IF his style is just simply unique as oppose to being unpopular because he's bad Nocturne

riseyoudongers8/28/2019, 1:56:43 PM12 votes

I dont get it riot you keep buffing champs that dont need it and nerfing champs that dont its getting annoying you keep trying to balance champs not even high end challanger players but esports players. Its rather annoying you keep trying to make every single champ look really flashy in every thing they do when its not needed like Aurelion Sol hes a hard champ there should be harder champs then others to master those who know how to put their balls where they need to be will just destory most midlaners but a new one will just smack to smack and lose. Its insane watching highend ASol players because they understand how to work those stars.

Hungry Cancer8/27/2019, 7:36:00 PM10 votes

Yet again no supports in the skin line. 3 midlaners and no support skin. Whatevs.

XERATH SKINS Lets get some new skins going for Xerath. Dark Star. Infernal. Something dark, evil, and powerful!

So is no one gonna mention the fact that elderwood veigar looks almost identical to skull kid from majoras mask? Hes wearing majoras mask and there is a deku baba from the game as his recall animation.....

Papa Kled8/28/2019, 9:07:31 PM9 votes

Wow, they actually went ahead with those god-awful Asol changes. After browsing the Asol main subreddit a bit while this was on PBE, I thought it was obvious that they pretty much unanimously thought the changes were overall a bad idea.

Yet another case of Riot not listening to its playerbase, I guess.

MintyFresh2328/29/2019, 3:40:40 PM8 votes

The Aurelion Sol change to his W was a huge mistake. Considering that that ability was his best chance at staying useful in a team fight and taking that from him after a mere 3 seconds is just so confusing. Someone in a game I was in /all chatted "report sol he's trolling" because he thought I was turning off my W during team fights on my own since he didn't read the patch notes. I do enjoy the pro's associated with the patch like greater movement speed in all areas and how early game you can pretty much fly bot and be there in 5 seconds but at the cost of his dps when he actually gets there is a huge con...not sure that was a good idea.

If you're just trying to make him more vulnerable in the early game, increase mana cost in his W so that Sol's cant just sit near a bush, cast W to clear waves instantly then gank a lane. I can see why that is OP in higher elo games but an increase in cost can hopefully assure a Sol to stay in lane till they can get a ROA to begin looking elsewhere. Also, as a mini buff, let his stars do microdamage to towers. Sols don't stay in lane too because of how miserable of a kit he has for sieging objectives and is FORCED to help other lanes. A small damage amount can give some peace of mind to Sol players that if they dominate their lane, then it's okay to stay in lane and not look to gank losing lanes and jeopardize their lead since they can focus on finishing their tower.
