Road to Pre-Season: Gameplay Systems Update

It’s pre-season again, and that gives us time to work on overhauling the systemic aspects of League, from the jungle to items to masteries. This year, when we think about what we want to improve about our game systems, the word that comes to mind is “adaptability”. We want to introduce new gameplay elements that cause every game to feel different, and force players to adapt to those differences. On the other hand, we want to give players the ability to make clear playstyle choices which have measurable gameplay differences.

Jungle

Let’s start with the jungle. We feel that the jungle has a lot more room to feel intent-driven, and less like a solvable system with a logical next step. Our overall goal is to make sure that junglers have more elements to interact with, and thus have to make choices about which ones are priorities.

Plants

When we originally gave camps Smite rewards, we wanted to allow players to decide how they used Smite to secure certain benefits. We think that system was a good start, but over time players broke into two groups: those who have basically “solved” Smiting, and those who haven’t. This makes the whole experience feel pretty deterministic and doesn’t allow for much expression of individual mastery. Moreover, tying that decision making to Smite makes players who take the PvP smite have to budget their smites a bit too much. If you’re setting up for a teamfight, you want to Smite raptors for vision control, the opposing ADC during a teamfight, and maybe dragon afterwards.

Enter Plants. We’re introducing interactive plants into the game and spawning them with some degree of variance. These plants should give junglers - and to some degree, other players - impactful decisions to make, without tying those choices to Smite.

Camps

Jungle optimization is an interesting skill, but right now one of the strongest routes is just going straight through the jungle in order. We want to introduce more variance between the camps, so players can have stronger preferences about which camps to prioritize, rather than merely clearing whatever is nearby and available. When it came down to it, that degree of variance was incompatible with our Smite rewards, which often established clear “best” and “worst” camps.

Protective Itemization

Aegis of the Legion has been a perennial struggle to balance around. Aura items are *strong*. After all, your team benefits up to five times as much from those stats as you do personally. On the other hand, it can be hard to notice the impact of an aura. As a result, auras have ended up overtuned to the point where they become mandatory. We want players to have itemization choices, and Aegis was simply blocking that goal.

On the other hand, Aegis of the Legion is one of the few items that allows you to make an ally harder to kill, a player fantasy we want to make sure to serve. While Aegis exists, most forms of protection will be overshadowed by the existence of its aura. Even if we made support items stronger to compensate, junglers would become the new Aegis purchasers (as has happened in past metas). So for the good of itemization as a whole, we’re killing its aura stats.

In its place, we’re creating several new protective items that are more distinct, allowing different supports to express different playstyles and goals. Instead of purchasing a generic protection item, we want supports to be able to look at a host of items and think “which one protects my ally in a way which aligns with my playstyle?”

We already have a few of those items. Mikael’s Crucible protects an ally from CC and Ardent Censer helps you keep an ally healed up. But we think there’s a lot we can do to sharpen those items’ identities, while creating new items to appeal to protective supports, whether they’re tanks, disruptors, or healers.

Masteries

Finally, there’s masteries. Our updated mastery system was aimed at making masteries meaningful to your playstyle. We wanted each player and champion to feel like there was a mastery at each level that appealed to their role and playstyle.

Part of that meant having multiple choices at each level of the tree. We shipped with a few holes in the tree, and we’re taking this opportunity to fill those holes in. However, there were also a few outliers we felt like we could take a crack at making more satisfying to use, as well as more specific in who wanted to take them. Overall, we want players to have masteries that make them feel “that’s what I want”, not “I guess this is optimal”.

We’ll be unveiling more details about these changes soon, so stay tuned for Preseason 2017!

5 bans?

It's a game people play professionally. The idea that you can stop people "solving" it is ludicrous. You should just take that idea, put it in a bin and light it on fire. Then take that bin and put it in a dumpster and light that on fire. Then fire that dumpster into the sun.

What are these plants going to do? Are they going to spawn and just be an extra camp for players? Or are these plants going to spawn with random buffs attached to them, where you don't have to smite but you still get the buff? (like vision/poison/minion stun) I'm confused about how these plants will interact.

(This is a rant, i tried to be as clear/sincere as possible) Can i just say, instead of working on junglers AGAIN. How about revisioning the champions that CANNOT see play due to the current state of the game (popular champions mainly). There's so many champions in League that aren't playable anymore at a higher level of elo. It's either META or LOSE now in D5+ [So lower may or may not understand]. Here are examples of popular champions that just simply cannot and probably will not see popular play again due to the fact that EVERYONE 100-0's them including supports "like" karma/brand/alistar - Vayne not only is she fun to play, but has a large mechanical incline, however EVERY ADC can do her job in the early game as well as the late game JUST AS WELL. Not only that, but playing a mechanically inclined champion LIKE vayne means you have to provide skill/timing(dodging/when to Q)/structures and cooldowns. Needless to say, with the new marksman items she is just 100% garbage. Zed Man, not only do people HATE playing against this champion, because he's "slippery, 1 shots too op" BUT he's just NOT that good. It's just like i stated on Vayne, he is a champion that has a high incline of mastery to be incredible at but you guys(riot) have put a cap on him with the extended nerfs, how EVERYONE can 1 shot now, even the easiest of champions. Players should be REWARDED when playing a highly skilled champion and doing WELL on that champion. Not a slap to the face when realistically Ekko, viktor, syndra etc ALL have better teamfight, burst, wave control, denial, and kill potential as a Zed in every point of the game except 6.Azir you guys took an entire 2 years to create a beautiful champion, yet you hide him away and create champions like Auru Sol that didn't let you think at all ENTIRELY. You guys had such a great overlay and idea on what you think you wanted this champion to be, and I had AMAZING hopes, yet we got stuck with that instead of this(http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/d/d5/AoShin_Concept.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130908110634) Azir was a beautiful creation that has been stripped and overtaken by EVERYMID LANER. including urgot. He was a champion that had a academically higher skill cap and players USED to get rewarded highly. But now shurima sits to rust. Orianna A champion that's been loved and hated by every player in League of legends that understands a WOMBOOO COMBOO. This champion not only brought teams together in champion select, but the ability to turn the tides of a teamfight back in Season 3-5 and that ALONE speaks VOLUMES. Orianna is nothing more than a tin can that gets worked over by champions, again, with EVERYTHING in their kits out classing. She's a high skill capped champion but requires a team, surviving laning (WHICH IS HUGE, her mana costs are outrageous, even with a full build) Syndra can get at least 6 combos and still have half mana compared to Orianna. Control mages? Please Balance this. At the end of the day here, people are going to be salty about this post. I'm a veteran to League of legends and i'm not prepared to see the direction it's heading in. One too many settle changes (change can be good, and i'm open to it ALWAYS) but a new champion every month, with 1 meta shift in 5 months, broken champions aren't being fixed, but people complain when someones "OP" but EVERY CHAMPION around them including THEMSELVES are "OP". It makes a lot of champions un-stable and League is becoming 1 trick pony status with Annie/Master yi/graves. How does 1 outplay a graves that's lost his cigar. The game is in complete chaos (the Solo Q side). I understand that this is a team game and I should play friends, but not all of us have that necessity due to daily lives. League of legends ranked/balancing is unstable, and veterans like myself, I believe, can relate to it in someway. Things aren't right when every champion can 100-0, it's a way of balancing but at the same time causation because champions like ^ (stated above) just DONT do that game, I could list off plenty more champions - Kassadin, Xerath, TF, Kalista, Karthus and so on. These champions have always been and always will be the "Omg he's a Legend on ___". INSTEAD we get, oh, it's a graves/syndra/rumble/kennen/zac. The only Champion that has seen ANY kind of love is Lee sin and he rightfully deserves it. Worlds has been nothing more than a disappointment on so many levels. All of these crap teams are able to compete with these amazing teams BECAUSE everything is busted and easy peasy imo, games are lost in champion select and that should NEVER be an ending to a game. Times running out, Overwatch is catching up, I hate that game. PLEEEASSEE, GIVE ME SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR RITO.
