Champ Insights: Camille, the Steel Shadow

Riot··3 votes·59,457 views

Sometimes, when we set out to make a new champion, we start with a specific role in mind—like a support jungler. Or we begin with just a theme—like "earth mage."

Camille began with a different sort of plan: "Let's make a champ that makes players feel like in-control badasses."

And, obviously, nothing is more badass than a lady with giant freakin' blades for legs. As a piece of concept art, Camille was pretty dope from the get-go. But to make her into a real character, we had to answer another question: what sort of person would replace their legs with a two-piece hextech knife set?

ON THE KNIFE'S EDGE

The most important thing to know about Camille is that she's better than you. She's smarter than you, richer than you, and a hell of a lot deadlier than you. In-game, she'll taunt you with these facts as she tears you apart with slicing kicks.

Camille is from Piltover, a city enjoying the fruits of a cultural renaissance. It's flourishing, and the moneyed families who pull the city's strings want it to stay that way. So they employ "fixers" like Camille—dark agents who work to maintain the current balance of power. One key to the current balance is that the lower city of Zaun must not rise, lest it become a real threat to the powers of Piltover.

"Piltover has a lot of money," says Ariel "Thermal Kitten" Lawrence, "and when there's a lot of money you often get big differences between the classes—the haves and the have-nots." Zaun's scientists may be more free from rules and regulations, but much of the physical wealth of the two symbiotic cities has gone to Piltover. Camille stands between these two worlds, and if she fails to preserve the balance, the consequences would be tremendous. Piltover would fall, chaos would rule.

So, as you might imagine, Camille's willing to go to some pretty extreme lengths to do her job well. When she realized that replacing some parts of herself with hextech weaponry could give her a leg up over her opponents, she just went for it. The idea of bodily augmentation isn't so strange to the people of Zaun and Piltover, even though many in these cities would consider Camille's particular body-mod to be pretty damn scary.

Admittedly, Camille has had some second thoughts about her big "blades-for-legs" transformation. "She would never admit it to anyone else," says Thermal Kitten, "but there's a little bit of a question lurking in the back of her mind: has she gone too far? How much more could she augment without losing her humanity?"

Her deepest fear is that, because she's traded in her own flesh for tools, others may see her as little more than a tool to be used. Camille is a woman straddling the razor-thin line between machinery and humanity. But none of that matters, she thinks to herself, so long as I'm still in control.

IN CONTROL

Playing as Camille is all about maintaining control, dictating battles on her terms. When she decides she wants a fight, she gets one—zipping in using her hookshot to force enemies into a 1-on-1 duel. "She's so confident that she can toy with you," says champion designer Jeevun "Riot Jag" Sidhu. "That's kind of what her Q is all about. It's like 'I'm going to hit you in two seconds.' And then she does."

Camille's hookshot was the first ability locked down in her kit, although even it went through a few weird iterations. At one point she was basically an English spiderwoman—she could shoot five hooks in a row and dynamically loop around walls. While this mechanic was very fun, it repeatedly proved to be impractical for use in most combat situation (and it was hard as hell to get a grip on).

Camille's kit features some very important cooldowns concentrated around specific windows, and it'll probably take most players a few games to get used to these. But those who put in practice with her will reap the rewards.

"When you pull off your combos correctly, it's supposed to sort of look like a dance," says Riot Jag. "She Qs you, backs away, sweeps you with W, and lunges back in for the second Q."

There are a few combos that'll require even more work to perfect. You can prime her W while you're in the middle of your hookshot/walldive combo so it goes off at the exact moment you dive in on an enemy. "That's the really flashy play that the playtest team always sends me replays of whenever they pull it off correctly," Riot Jag says.

Camille shines brightest when on cleanup duty. If you’re losing a fight to Camille’s team, she’s gonna hunt all of you down like an unstoppable secret agent from one of those movies that gets too many sequels. She will find you, and she will… well, you know.

POWERED BY HEXTECH

A lot of Camille's early concept art pulled influence from other "cyborg assassin" archetypes from movies and videogames. "She’s a James Bond-style agent," says concept artist Hing "Hdot" Chui, "but she’s also an elegant lady."

We came up with a bunch of early nicknames for Camille meant to capture or convey some aspects of her personality: Lady Em, The Gray Lady, The Left Hand of Piltover, or just Diver. Without question, the goofiest of these was "Cyborg MI6 Mary Poppins."

The hardest thing to capture with Camille's visual design was the idea that her hextech core (which powers her legs) has slowed, but not stopped, her aging process. She’s actually around 80 years old, but her form suggests that she’s much younger. She’s not immortal, but she’s older than she looks.

The secret to Camille's good looks has nothing to do with her skincare routine—it's the hextech core embedded in her chest. It takes more than strong hips to maneuver her leggy cutlery, and that means Camille's commitment to the cause has affected just about every part of her body. Even her eyes glow, betraying the inhuman source of her power.

Camille is chopping heads on the PBE now. Stay sharp—she'll hit the live servers soon.

Does Camille have sheathes for her legs? The thought of her poking holes into wooden floors really gets to me.

So, in order to keep the balance in Piltover, she has to make Viktor look like the bad guy, right?

Is her leg-grappling hook inspired from "Attack on Titan"? Cz the functions look hella similar to it.

A robot with blades for legs? Was Camille inspired by a pair of scissors? If so, Camille = scissors, Malphite = rock, and now we need a champion that resembles paper! You know, to have a game of rock paper scissors in-game

Maybe Maokai ? He may not be paper yet but after laning against Camille he just might be.

Unless, of course, your name is Talon. In which case unless she has and lands her ult in time, she gets to run futilely around the first or second wall you hop while you go heal up for your next pass at her.

Talon's post-rework consistent mobility is the stuff of legends. As long as he doesn't stay in one place after having to hop, he's nigh untouchable. Talon One for Alls are amazing. The difference between most mobility champs' short, local bursts of mobility and Talon's ability to just flat out cross the entire map in seconds on whim on a fairly regular basis is huge.

Time Drifter22 votes

How were Taliyah and Ekko a waste of potential? You can go multiple builds on Ekko at ease, and he's just fine the way he is now.

Taliyah is at a person's skill discretion. You can either do nothing with her, or do anything you want. But are you going to tell me that all of these are wrong? Cause if so, continue to tell a level 7 of both that he's wrong [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

CosmicDookie11 votes

'Big Lincoln' why do you even play if you're just gonna insult riot about how horrible their champs are?

SleepiestRobot8 votes

"Ekko is a street urchin stereotype who just happens to be smart enough to make a personal time machine."

Oh, golly gosh. It's almost as if he's, oh, I don't know, a product of his ecology or something! He hails from Piltover's underbelly equivalent, where both science and poverty are symbiotic.

What else do you expect from an ambitious, rough-and-tumble teenager who can't stand to see his parents break their backs just for the bare necessities in life? He is the honor-bound son and the Renaissance man at the same time, looking to broaden his horizons in every direction while also trying his damnedest to stay grounded and remember where he came from. If you actually take a minute to savor the lore of each character, you might find a few that you like, Big Lincoln. However, I get the idea that you would be the person to watch a Shakespeare play with your headphones in and go "eh, writing was shit. I could have done it better."

Itsbeghdev19 votes

Taliyah is a "control mage" who blows you up if you don't respect her zoning perfectly. Ekko is a skirmisher who blows you up if you let him jump on you and you don't kill him first. Camille is a diver who waits around for a good opportunity to enter a fight, does so, and proceeds to chunk out everyone in sight. And don't say she's basically Vi or Hecarim or Irelia, because she's not. Her kit is different and requires different execution. She plays with precision and sorta embodies what it means to be a diver over just a facemelter or a high damage initiator or a pseudo-assassin.

General Theritt16 votes

Agreed on your points there, but she's less precision and more... brute force. My friend played the PBE and claims her extremely simple, and overpowered, as she embodies quick assassination while building tanky, very similar the the characters mentioned. You can go on about her E being all unique, but her two other abilities are just brute force kicks and attacks, and her ult is a bigger jarvan ult, less focused on the burst in a zone and rather trapping out a single unit (once again, Irelia, Vi, or Hecarim can do the same things less efficiently, with only 1 of them having true damage).

Her passive makes her scale in and provides a shield for problematic engages or encounters. (Vi, Irelia (CC shielding)).

Her Q is an easy triforce proc and provides true damage, which to be honest, is absolutely insane considering this is an bruiser/assassin/high damage initation, and there's a reason we don't provide assassins or initation with easy access to true damage besides specific abilities (usually with not even all that much) items or red buff. (Q being similar to Vi's E, Hecarim's Q, and Irelia's Q, W, E, with all of them being her primary resets for autos)

Her W is simple, with % max HP damage and sustain no less, also providing a large slow (Vi's W, Hecarim's W, and Irelia's W, with more or less just better effects if hit on the outer ring)

Her E is flat out ridiculous, providing extreme mobility and an long duration stun that is almost unnecessary considering she'll most likely aim for a bunch of targets grouped up since its an AOE stun. It also provides an extremely quick get away dash, and a secondary dash if needed, providing more than deemably strong mobility to an already ridiculous effect. And it provides attack speed. Yeah. (See Vi's Q+E combo, Irelia's Q+E+W combo, and hecarim's W+Q combo)

Her ult was described earlier, but just to summarize: You are stuck. Camille's team gets to hail mary the zone and if you're the one target, screw you, because you aren't safe. All it takes is one target, and you're done, not even the other bruisers can burst you down, and usually don't have a trap zone to help, meaning even if I ult as Vi or hecarim, Camille has the ability to call for her team to mark down her target, while the others have to hope during a teamfight that their engage is recognized and is assassinated fast enough before their CC wears off. (See Hecarim's Ult, and Vi's ult)

She just does what all these tanks do... but just... better. Its disgusting how much they actually overloaded her kit and made a lot of iconic abilities for these champions. you'd pick these champions that had equal strengths but varying weaknesses, meaning you had to choose a situation where one was good over the other, and just place Camille as a multi-tool capable of doing their jobs for them with just a better kit. And don't tell me "she's skill based" because no offense, but AoE stuns aren't hard to land. Especially with 2 dashes, one that passes through a wall, and then a jarvan ult that your team can just walk through towards the target.
