It’s been a little over a year since the release of the Riot Games API, and since then there’s been a lot of great stuff that we've seen from the community. We’re continually excited to see all the new creations that you guys put together, so in an effort to have a little fun and strengthen the developer community we’re happy to present our first API Challenge.

So rather than building a program that reads everything off of the Match History page (and updating that program when the layout of the match history changes), Riot made an API so programmers can just ask Riot and get the information in a way that's easy to use in programming. Programmers can then go and do fun stuff with that data, like tell you your win rate with a certain champion or with certain friends.
It doesn't interact with the game, just the history.

DrCyanide3 votesDifferent games have different types API's. Riot could have made a spectator API, which would be usable in 8bitbyte's idea. Riot could have also made a mod API, which would have let us design our own custom game modes. Instead, Riot chose to focus on the history of matches being available via the API.
Items and Champion info is also available via the API, so it's not completely limited to Match History, but Match History is the end use case that people are most familiar with.
You'll also notice that 8bitbyte never said they didn't know what an API is, they implied they didn't know what was in the Riot API.
Cryptic Slug24 votesIn layman's terms, API stands for Application Programming Interface. It's what websites usually use to interact with various databases. In this case, an API would be used to communicate with Riot's servers to retrieve information and output it in an understandable manner to individuals such as you and I.
EDIT: (And yes, while keeping your information safe.)
For example, Many websites use API's to attach things like Twitter feeds and such to their websites. Similarly, you could use the Google Map's API to program your own personal distance calculator, or something.
