Designing a

world-saving

champion

Clairvoyance Blog

Hi everyone! We’re Tog3pi, an Insights researcher, and Kushnood, philanthropy guy. We recently did some pretty unusual global research to help Riot's philanthropy team understand what issues players care about, and what they want to change about the real world. Our hope was that if we answered these questions, we could find better ways to help nonprofits make an impact in areas that matter to players.

Here at Riot, we use a variety of different research techniques depending on the questions we want to answer, including player labs, surveys, ethnography and data analytics. When we first started approaching this topic, it was pretty different from anything we were currently researching. Since we can’t meet everybody (sadface), we created the “Three Wishes Survey,” which reached thousands of players in multiple regions to ensure they were heard. Players were asked to share their top three wishes related to themselves, their country, and the world.

As the survey went live earlier this year, we began visiting our players in their home countries and setting up focus groups to discuss what really matters to them. Sometimes super structured, rigorous surveys aren’t enough—we need creative approaches that are less scientific but more evocative. We needed to go out and spend time talking and getting to know our players in person.

It can be super uncomfortable to talk about feelings, especially with a group of strangers. So, we came up with a fun way to get players talking about what really matters to them: creating a champion. The champs didn't have to fit into the League's game or universe, since we wanted players to explore their own imaginations without any artificial limits like cooldown timers on abilities. We asked players to create champions whose abilities reflected their values and the issues they care about.

As an example, we introduced “Zulia,” a champion whose ultimate—Creativia!—spawned art centers that allowed more people to learn and grow artistic skills. Her W—NomNom—provided food packages for people in poverty. Immediately, players grasped the idea we were pitching, and started making their own real-world OP champs. Here are a few highlights:

Luna

Passive Aura of Happiness
Q Spirit Force: Allows an area to become abundant in vegetation, growth and animal ecosystems
W Cleanse: Sends deep cleansing spells into the earth to purify water
E Mental Comfort: Removes all fears, silences, stuns. Makes people unafraid
R Unite: Stops all conflict in a particular area

Luna was designed by a player in Europe who was a self-described “socially minded person.” She told us how important environmental conservation was to her and how much she love outdoor activities.

With this champion, we thought it was 1) adorable af, and 2) had breadth in terms of the topics it addresses. Luna highlights issues ranging all the way from clean water to mental well-being and conflict resolution. A ton of these values appeared as priorities for players in survey results from across the globe, so it was awesome to get the chance to really talk about them in person.

The Time Controlling Frog

Passive Gain more time by spending other resources
Q Share skills with others so that you don’t need to waste time
W Boosts their skills and abilities and grows physical size at the expense of some life force
E Momentarily increase your ability to memorize. Anything you memorize during this period is stored in your memory and never forgotten
R Slows down time to give you more time during the day

We talked with this player from Asia at the end of their busy week. He had just come from work and had an entire weekend of school work ahead of him. From his champion design, it's pretty clear he was highly focused on optimizing his time during the day. However, during our conversation, the player discussed a lot of his frustration around the hyper-competitive job market for new college graduates, and how much pressure he felt trying to start a good career.

This player was not alone—in fact, quality education and job training was the highest rated value amongst our North American, European, Brazilian and Oceanic players in our multi-region survey.

Poncho

Passive Meditation: When alone constantly battles with his own negativity striving him more to help others
Q Calm Palm: Poncho hits angry people until they feel calm
W Repel negativity: Creates a field that negative energy cannot enter
E Warmth: Poncho gives people that feel alone the warmth of their good memories, boosting morale
R Restoration: Helps people through their problems by channeling his positive energy through them, gradually restoring their mental state

From reading Poncho’s abilities, a pretty clear theme around mental well-being emerges. Further into our conversation, this player shared that they had a friend who was suffering from depression and wanted to help him out, but felt helpless on how to do so. He mentioned that depression is very different for everyone, but a good starting point is to get people to begin talking about it in order to address it. For being relatively young, we were gobsmacked at his maturity and ability to open up about things that can be hard for anyone to talk about.

Interestingly, health and well-being was another value that players shared, scoring as the #2 topic of interest in Oceania and North America, and mentioned by players throughout all surveyed regions.

More Champs

Players created countless other champs during our focus group sessions. Here are a few of our favorites:

As you’d expect, there’s a lot of variety across the different champion designs. In Northern Europe for instance, there was a focus on physical health, environmental conservation, and enjoying the sunny outdoors. However, there were a lot of similarities among certain players no matter where they were living. If you’re trying to graduate from college or find a decent job, life sucks for pretty much everyone (we didn’t really need any research for that gem). Building and maintaining good mental health is also a value we all share, and most of us could use a Poncho in our lives to help us out from time to time.

We’ve learned a ton from our players so far—it's incredible how creative, honest and open these players were when sharing these thoughts with us. But how do we use these insights? First, we can now better understand what's going through the minds of players across the globe when they’re not in game, and especially what IRL issues matter to them. In combination with multi-region survey results, these focus groups helped us identify some particular nonprofits we’re partnering with in the near-ish future. Ultimately, this was about learning so we could find authentic ways to support issues that matter to our players and make a difference in their communities.

If you could make your own champions to help the world, what would they look like, and what could they do?

I think its really neat that your company actually reaches out and tries to understand and unite some ideas for the better good and to get a general brainstorm for what things need to change. This really isn't about politics or any sort of hate, just an idea of better, something that is far too rare in NA. This post made my day 100% better, and I'm truly glad that the company that makes my favorite game can go from silly chef skins, to some really rad lore and concepts (Ivern's lore was touching as all heck), to world concepts like this. I enjoy how much community participation is affecting riot games nowadays, and hope things like this just keep coming. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Well, here's my idea. It's based on problems/issues I've had with my own life. Mainly due to success and failure:

Champion: Hierophant, The Echo of Progress

Passive- Echos: Upon success or failure, Hierophant leaves behind an echo that can be picked up at any time. Echos of Success improve abilities. Echos of Failure deal massive damage but also grant far larger boosts.

Q- Learn from History: Hierophant blesses an ally, restoring their morale based on the amount of echoes he's picked up.

W- Experience: A wall of echos forms, blocking damage in front of Hierophant as he moves forward. The health and thickness of the wall is based on the amount of echos he's picked up.

E- Tell the Tale: Hierophant shares his tale among allies. For the next few seconds, others will leave behind echos that Hierophant can pick up and improve his own tale.

R- Endless Journey: Each echo culminates in a single, focused chance. Success or failure, this ability will leave behind double the echos and remain until all allies have gained an echo.

In my life, I've often struggled with situations. I often feel like everything I don't care about I succeed at yet everything I am passionate about I stumble and falter. Hierophant speaks to me as a character who constantly improves, hurting itself when remembering the faults it made but moving on despite that. Each echo is a story, whether they're his or anothers, and each story creates a tapestry that makes the next project more spectacular and with higher and higher chances of success.

I want to join in on this, too

Champion: Ennyx, The Unknown boy. (pronounced like Linux, but with an E instead of an L).

Resource Bar: This bar starts out at 50/100. Whenever it goes below 50, Ennyx is in the Darkness. Ennyx gains Darkness by being alone (No ally champions around). When above 50, Ennyx is in the Light. Ennyx gains Light by being around allied champions. Being in the Darkness or the Light changes what his abilities do. Darkness and Light are not lost when using abilities. They are only changed by being near or away from allied champions and from the effects of Solace.

Q - Verted. Light: Ennyx gains extra movement speed and attack speed passively, based on amount of Light, increased when Q is active. Darkness: Ennyx gains attack damage and armor passively, based on amount of Darkness, increased when Q is active.

W - Greetings/Nocturnal. If Ennyx has light, he can instantly teleport a short distance, healing all allies near where he teleports to. Heal amount is based on amount of Light Ennyx has. If Ennyx has Darkness, he can stealth and his next attack after coming out of stealth is AoE and does bonus dmg based on amount of Darkness.

E - Solace. Ennyx can teleport to any allied champion's position, regardless of whether they're dead or alive. If they are dead, Ennyx gains max Darkness. If they are alive, Ennyx gains max Light.

**R - ** Apathy/Embraced.
Darkness: Ennyx knocks back all near by champions towards their Nexus turret, dealing dmg based on the amount of darkness Ennyx has. to all effected, including allies. Knock back distance dependent on the missing health of the targets effected (Enemies with more health missing doesn't get knocked back as far as those at full, reversed for allies). Light: Ennyx teleports all his allies to his side. For the next couple seconds, they have a shield and movement speed boost based on the amount of light Ennyx has.

Thank you Riot, I have been going through a tough phase of my life for a year or so now and it has taken a toll on my friends and family. Hearing all the good things you do not only makes you better people, but also affects us in the same way. I thank you for 4 years of just being nice and grateful to me and the community of which you worked so hard to build. If it was not for you I would be a more negative person and Would be more gloomy. Through your actions you've single-handedly changed me to be the best I can be and have as much fun as I want. I love you guys. Keep up the good work Lux

I'll Take a stab at this Ai - The Love Fighter Passive - Love Well: When isolated for long periods of time greatly increases compassion towards others and refill's it's love well. Love Well: The resource for Ai's abilities. Q: _Lovers Brawl _- Force all surrounding entities to engage in a melee brawl battle royale to understand each others feelings. W: _Balance in all Things _- Force all entities in contact with the same medium Ai is in contact with to have true neutrality. E: _Unconditional Love _- Force all creatures in an area to be truly alone and only with themselves so they can understand how to love the most important person and gain understanding and empathy towards others through isolation, sacrifice, hard work, and survival. R: _True Love Attack _- Fires a BEAM made of pure undistilled love Devastating and wreaking Destruction to an area it strikes so life can flourish , change, and grow.

Quote: "I am a Lover & a Fighter, because Love fights."

Word Key: Devastating : Marks the area of effect so previously occupying entities cannot return or use the area but enables new and different entities to take up the space and flourish profusely. Destruction : Annihilates affected area indiscriminately. "Love is blind." - Lee Sin: The Blind Monk.

I had a really interesting idea for a champ the other day actually. Let me know what you think.

Farin - The CopyCat

Passive - Repayment - Every time Farin uses an ally ability, that ally will do an extra 1%/3%/5% (+ 0.5% for every 100 AP) (+ 0.5% for every 100 AD) damage the next time they use that same ability.

Q - Empty Slot A - Farin casts this on an ally, 'borrowing' their Q ability until he switches it out with another. If Empty Slot A is used on an enemy, it disables their Q ability for 2 seconds . (Farin can only have one ability from each Champ)

W - Empty Slot B - Farin casts this on an ally, 'borrowing' their W ability until he switches it out with another. (Same Rules apply as they did with his Q)

E - Empty Slot C - Farin casts this on an ally, 'borrowing' their E ability until he switches it out for another. (Same Rules apply as they did with his Q and E)

R - I'll Take That - Farin targets an enemy champion, channeling for 1.5 seconds as long as they stay in his range. When the channel is complete, Farin can use the target's R ability in the next 30/60/90 seconds. If Farin uses the R on the champion he stole it from, he deals an extra 2/4/6% bonus true damage.

I really love this. I think that as a community Riot has always been unique, and my love for the company just keeps growing :) thank you for actually looking at what matters to your players, and forming a serious division that looks at giving back. I hope there are more progress posts on these efforts in the future, and would love to learn more about how Riot is moving forward in its philanthropic efforts.

I thought this was really cool so I deciced to make my own on the fly. Apologies in advanced for any spelling mistakes as it is really late and im very tired. umm lets go with Mr. GoodPerpesctiveMan. yeah thats a great name. Pasive: Sees things with a positive outlook even tho his life is crappy becuase it makes him happy, therefore.....increased health regen..... Q: reverts ally damage taken by rephrasing the situation. W: Mr. man here feels good and does more damage E: gives all allies around him a sheild becuase of his cool calm and friendly personality. R: makes a bad teamfight good by rephrasing how the fight went to his allys. So I am just always happy. I know a lot of people that have much easier lives than me but are not as happy. I pride myself on feeling good all the time. Yes even when I play lol. Worst case scenario is "man this is really frustrating". I just wish everyone could feel as good as I do being nice and helping others. Above all I just want more people to........play support. Its FUN it really is just FUN HELPING THE TEAM! (yo im like 3 years old so dont hate yo)

This is interesting, reaching out to the players to see what sort of interesting creations they can come up with. I mean you should probably include if all the staff like a character you go into making it, though the one who created it would get it for free showing that you enjoyed their character creation of the champion themself, and if you did do that. You should allow them to give a theme for the skin to come out with it, though this is only my opinion since I have always thought about what form of character creations someone could do, and it's always got me stuck on it lol. So perhaps a contest may be in order, cause that would just be amazing XD But I do wanna see Thunder Lord Olaf since his E calls down thunder but nicely done otherwise.

You guys (Riot) are totally awesome that you interact with your community and fan base sooo much, ranging from replying to a lot to people's comments in the "Discuss" section, to doing fun things like showing off champions made by fans (Including Poncho!) You guys also have totally listened and reached out to what your fan base has to say about tons of things, whether it being them wanting Solo Q back, to the feedback about Zyra during the pre-Mage update! A company interacting and communicating to their fans and community with tons of kindness and personality is rare in other big companies. It really warms my heart that you care about not just the game and how people love it and what they love about it, but you really care about the whole community! You have helped me through some hard times in my life via League of Legends! I had tons of joy playing the game (I still do!) and I am glad that a very thoughtful company like Riot exists! (On a side note, I LOVE the champions in the game like Ahri , Renekton , and even Warwick !)

Champion: Phoenix

Passives - Find goal: While Phoenix has not activated W or E the player has no control and Phoenix wanders aimlessly though the jungle.
Repetition: Repeatedly achieving the same goal results in a stacking 50% experience debuff.

Q - Cool Stuff: Phoenix generates impressive vfx that have no effect on the game. Transforms to ability 'Laser Focus' upon R activation and does TONS OF DAMAGE.

W - Try: Phoenix selects a goal (killing structure or enemy) and deals 50% damage to all targets between themselves and the goal. Re-activation of W cancels all previous uses of E or R and inflicts 90% health damage to Pheonix. Achieving the goal without use of R or E results in 50% experience gained.

E - Try again: Can only be used after E use and R proc. Phoenix deals 200% damage to all targets between them and the goal defined by 'Try'.

R - From the Ashes: Can be used upon death after applying W (long cooldown) or E (short cooldown). Phoenix returns instantly and gains a level. Transforms Q into 'Laser Focus'

I support mental health because I'm bipolar and a lot of people are on that spectrum somewhere. A lot of people think it's normal because what's in our heads and hearts is the definition of our normal but it can be toxic af. Yes, what's in your head may harm you intentionally or not. It did to me. Weird, get over it, get help, move on, be a decent human.

Mental health issues do not define anyone in the same way that a diabetic is not defined by being diabetic. But if you let it ruin your life or kill you, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Wow, where did that come from?

That's mine ^^ [San , The Possesive]

History: '' There was a rumor, people who were living their lives, and suddenly began to act like zombies, picking up all the food that was in the house, and throwing in a hole, they said they were possessed by some spirit with hunger, people lost all their food, and went hungry because of this spirit ... outraged, decided explore the hole where everyone throws their food, there was no one, just a corpse, pale middle, and eyes without soul, they were confused because all the food was gone ... but of course, got scared ... to calm the entity , they called an exorcist, so the possession of bodies will end , and to end everyone's hunger ... someone else was possessed, then the exorcist acted, he went to the body , and kicked the entity, an explorer It was near the hole and heard a noise inside, he went there to check, and a body lifeless woke up , nervous, the body attacked the explorer, so the exorcist heard the noise and went to check, he saw a being, stealing the vital energy explorer, until exclaimed - '' Get out !
