Champion Insights: Taric, the Shield of Valoran

Riot··5 votes·95,995 views

As we've tuned the visuals on Taric's co-stars, the crystal-coated, pizza-footed Demacian has begun to feel like an eyesore by comparison. Couple his outrageous visuals with an outdated kit, and we had a prime candidate for a rework—but our goal wasn't to completely replace him. Instead, we sent the Gem Knight on an epic journey to transform him into the Shield of Valoran.

Finding grace atop the mountain

When we originally created Taric, we came up with this pretty vague backstory about him being a space alien obsessed with gems. As a result, most players had the impression that he was just a weird dude who's always moaning about gems. The challenge was to write a story that could turn Taric into a believable character with a purpose and a justifiable explanation of his obsession with geology.

We began by looking for a place for Taric to live that fit him thematically. He's supposedly a Demacian, but nothing about his gameplay or pointy wardrobe particularly fit that region's theme. Our first impulse was to do away with that aspect of his story and reinvent him from scratch, but we had a better idea: what if we made the old Taric better by giving him a second act? We began writing a draft for "chapter two" in the tale of the Gem Knight: one which would send Taric on a perilous journey up the epic Mt. Targon.

Sometimes, as with Sion, we actually do have to melt a character down and start fresh when we rework them, but we prefer to avoid complete retcons when we can. “My personal mandate is do no harm and make it better,” says senior narrative writer George "Glorft" Krstic. “Don’t wreck a champ by destroying the things that players really like. You can’t make Wolverine suddenly not have claws.”

Upon reaching the summit, Taric fought and defeated a celestial entity known as "The Protector." The epic creature was impressed by Taric's determination, and it bestowed new protective powers upon the fallen Demacian. Thus the Gem Knight became Valoran’s Shield.

The newer, more glorious Taric is the same absurdly handsome Demacian you know and love. But his new story tells how he fell from grace, then found it again atop Mt. Targon. Taric's journey redefines him as someone who fights for beauty, who defends the delicate. He'd fight two armies at once to defend a flower (or two juggernauts at once to defend an Ezreal ADC, which is sort of the same thing).

Taric's trip to the mountaintop gave him new purpose, but he needed more than that before he was ready for the Rift. He needed some fresh duds.

Shine bright like a diamond

Old Taric’s model is the most conspicuously heinous aspect of the champ; it's about 75 percent gems and crystals exploding out of every part of him. Frankly, it doesn’t look like it belongs in a video game from this decade.

But his crystals don't have to look bad, nor should his epic, flowing, cover-of-a-romance-novel hair. We wanted to keep both of these things but execute them in a way that felt in tune with our current standards. Once we got Taric near Mt. Targon, we just needed to ask ourselves what his crystals actually are: Are they like regular gemstones that you could mine and find in the ground, or might they be something more interesting? We landed on the idea that the crystals represent a power that Taric received during his journey up Mt. Targon.

The crystals aren't stones; they're made of starlight. Throw away your physics textbook, unfollow Neil deGrasse Tyson on Twitter, and believe us when we tell you that if you slow down starlight and concentrate it, it will condense into a solid object imbued with strange, kinetic powers. These crystals (or gems, if you will) are the source of Taric's newfound powers.

To preserve Taric's unique vibe, we tuned up the over-the-top visual aspects of his visual design. When the Shield of Valoran struts around the Rift, his luscious mane flows wildly behind him, as if he’s constantly standing near a fan. It’s longer, wavier, more eye-catching. This is a man who could star in a shampoo commercial. And you'd buy that shampoo.

Emphasizing the best parts of Taric meant embracing and surgically enhancing his masculine, handsome beauty. We gave Taric's base model a stronger jaw and gave his jacket a plunging V-neck. In early playtests, we had his V-neck going to the bottom of his pecs, but during internal testing a few Rioters gave the feedback that the V-neck needed to reveal more, to go deeper. They wanted all the Taric they could get. So deeper we went.

Functional and stylish

Old Taric's kit wasn't obviously terrible, but it did suffer from one big problem: almost nothing he did felt or looked impactful. The Taric player pressed a button, and that caused something to happen, but the result was rarely clear to everyone in the fight. Playing as old Taric rarely offered you the chance to feel the sparkling glee of landing a Lux Q or the earth-shattering BOOM of a Malphite ult—the fun was all in quietly prolonging fights while shrugging off truly outrageous amounts of damage. His abilities were functional, but we needed to make them stylish.

This was in part a visual clarity issue, but it was also a result of how widely dispersed and invisible Taric's abilities were—it mattered to the team as a whole when Taric gave 12 percent of his armor to his teammates, but those players were unlikely to notice the impact on their individual play and react accordingly. To make abilities feel more impactful, we make them more concentrated; so we killed some of his messy stat-boosting abilities and replaced them with noticeably flashier moves like his new ult, Cosmic Radiance, which grants his allies temporary invulnerability. You'll feel like a star when it hits.

Point-and-click abilities have their place, but Taric's old stun was taking up far too much of his power budget. By turning his E (Dazzle) into a skillshot, we were able to ramp up its potential power (it now stuns all struck enemies instead of just one targeted baddie) in lieu of the lower guaranteed power of his old on-click ability. Talented Taric players will have more, clearer opportunities to make lock-down plays for their team, and bad Taric players will have more opportunities to disappoint you.

Taric is still a tank, and he still heals his friends with his Q (Starlight's Touch), but the crystal-sharing mechanic of his new W (Bastion) further cements Taric's role as a protector of those in need. That the Shield of Valoran can only link up with one ally at a time would suggest that he's best when he focuses on helping only that champion, but this isn't the case; he can use his Bastion-buddy as a way to be two places at once, both stunning enemy backline carries and peeling for his own squishies as needed. He's here healing his Wukong, there peeling for his Lucian. Taric is everywhere, always protecting those in need.

Taric has descended from Mt. Targon and is looking gorgeous on the PBE now. Expect to feel the protective embrace of his crystals soon.

It's still his joke. He has additional jokes on top, but the "outrageous" line is definitely still there.

Questions! Why is the Starlight Crystal not mentioned at all in his lore? Without some context, his story and his playable character have relatively little cohesion with one another. Of all the people to drop a point and click stun from, why Taric? Bottom lane has some of the most notoriously cancerous mobile champs like Kalista, Lucian, Quinn, and sometimes Graves, and against them, landing skill shots is like throwing rocks at rabbits. Aside from those, I love everything about the new Taric and you guys did a super fantastic job and you have really listened to his fans and taken him in the direction we've always wanted him to go! I also nominate that if his Cosmic Radiance proves too unbalanced, you return his old Radiance, but with more visual flash, as that combined with Bastion will be pretty amazing. Final question, just for posterity: Can we get a confirmation that Taric is gay? Please?

Do you REALLY want characters to be explicitly defined by their sexual orientation, even when it's not germane to their purpose? I feel like the guy might easily have been bi or gay when he was a man, but he's one of those meta humans with a celestial being riding shotgun now, so the scope of who and how he loves just got really wide and ethereal.

If he's gay in your heart as a Taric fan than I'd just say he's gay. shrug Don't let Riot's lack of shoehorning love scenes into war stories hold you back, mate!

Do we need to know that Anivia froze Gnar, or that Lissandra was blinded by a bear, or that Miss Fortune's first name is Sarah? Do we need taunts, lore, or anything other than numbers? These things make the characters more human and relatable, and having a gay character does the same thing. You probably won't really understand needing someone to relate to in your games until you yourself fall into a social group that isn't represented. Plus, announcing he is gay is not defining him by his sexuality. He's defined by his fall from grace and ascent to becoming an Aspect. Lucian is more defined by his straight sexuality with his vengeance for his wife than Taric would be if he was announced as gay.

KernelKen56 votes

Oleandervine, you're awesome! I keep trying to tell straight people that representation matters. Why can't LGBT people have a piece of the pie? Why can't we exist in this mythical universe? I want our stories told. Straight people literally are represented by every character in the game. Why can't we just have one? Why is it all this fake concern for "not having characters explicitly defined by their sexual orientation" when WE want one character?

Representation matters to those of us who aren't always in the game. I know that whenever Riot has released a person of color as a champ, I play the hell out of them. I feel that connection with the game and the escape of fantasy element. When Ekko was released that was when I felt represented fully. He was a darkskin, Black champion who wanted to have fun and be seen. Give me more of that.

(BTW straight gamers, Taric vogues in his dance animation and I need you to google what that is before asking whether or not Taric is gay)

Just wanted to hop on and say something really quick (well that was my original intention but this turned into an essay)

While I'm totally for LGBT peeps being represented in games, I don't really think Taric should be the first one coming out of the closet. His (and ezreal's) gayness has been a joke for ages, and I'm not sure I'd want the first openly gay character in league to be some hypersexualized guy obsessed with beauty and style. Is it forbidden for gay people to act stereotypically gay? no, but I'm wary that Taric's depth as a character will be lost and transformed into just another gay joke if riot offhandedly mentions he's gay (not to mention that would make no sense within his current lore)

In fact, I'm glad riot isn't making his sexuality a big part of his story, because it's a statement that there's more to him than being a fruitcake. No, I want the first gay champion to be someone unaffiliated with all the stale jokes people have been making about we LGBT people for decades, and I want their sexuality to just casually fit into their story, just like it does in real life.

Obviously, there's room for romance in league of legends, and obviously overt LGBT stuff has been avoided by riot for a long time for less than stellar reasons (not all of their audience is as accepting as coastside NA and western europe, and if graves can't even haVE A CIGAR I doubt riot would be comfortable having an overt queer relationship in the game).

But if they're finally going to breach that gap, I want them to do it right.

I feel that these pieces of lore have more to do with giving the champions a motivation to their actions, rather than character building. Should Taric's motivation be about yearning for Ezreal, for instance, I feel that defining his sexuality is important then to his motivation.

Not that more character building is a bad thing, but I applaud the method by which Riot handles characters expressing their sexuality, in hints. For instance, the new Taric splash for the armor of the 5th age shows Ezreal rather plainly, hinting of an acknowledgement of the ship. Or lets say, Garen's special voice lines with Katarina too, its a hint, but not official. This way, Riot is neutral and attempts to appease most bases without limiting anything, by leaving hints for people to explore with their imaginations.

I'm all for an openly gay character being represented in League. I just don't want it to be Taric. He IS a walking camp trope and he serves to divert the trope more by not being confirmed gay than he does by skipping through summoners rift. He solidifies the idea that being gay means you're frivolous and dainty, even as a massive hulking fighter. Further, he'd only help to push the idea of being gentle hearted or interested in beauty as being a distinctly homosexual or feminine trait. Which is stupid. If anything, I'd prefer someone like Darius, Jarvan, Swain, or Miss Fortune to be confirmed gay. Someone who isn't defined by it, just has it as a part of their lives. Representation is important, I agree- but it's also important to consider how you're being represented.

I just have to say, the discussion on this subject is of way better caliber than I expected from the internet. It is articulate, thoughtful, and respectful. Cookies to everyone. As a person who identifies as outside the heterosexual norm, this is a breath of fresh air and a glimmer of hope for better representation and inclusion of diversity in fantasy and gaming.

Since when the fuck did Anivia freeze Gnar? More importantly, WHY? Was he a threat to the Freljord or something? And what about Lissandra? Where did you find that out?

Riot responded on the Brazilian boards when Gnar came out and they were doing his Q&A there that Anivia foresaw a cataclysmic event in the future, and that Gnar's unique condition would be crucial to saving the Freljord, so she froze him so he would be preserved for when that even occurred. As for Lissandra, I don't recall where, possibly during the Freljord event ages ago, but it was stated that on attempting to conquer the bear tribes of which Volibear is a part of, she was blinded in a fight with one of their elders and was forced to retreat.

But he's not a negative stereotype. Sure, he's got stereotypical aspects to him, but then, so does everyone else. Taric is a man who was a high ranking official in the army. He fell from his position because he valued life and beauty above warmongering. He was banished, yet rose from his exile and braved a mountain that has killed many men before, and he bested a god to become a demigod. That's a pretty damn positive representation of a gay character.

The thing is, if he is gay, that already doesn't have any correlation to his feats as a hero. His lore is about his actions as a defamed elite of the Demacian military who becomes a god, so of course his sexuality doesn't fit because it isn't relevant to his actions as a Demacian or an Aspect. His being gay is purely tertiary to who he is as a champion, just something to make him more human. I want him to be gay because of this, because it isn't linked to his actions or his feats. I want him to be gay because he is a hero, and if he's gay like I am, I can be proud of that, even if it does fall on some stereotypes (though, they don't detract from him or make him a laughingstock in the way that gay tropes are normally presented.)

I feel like Taric would be more pansexual though. Like he doesn't really have a preference, he just loves things that are beautiful. I feel like he sees beauty in all things and could be easily attracted to any man, woman, etc that he found aesthetically pleasing. That being said Ez is definitely beautiful like a delicate flower ;) and he want to explore probably gives Taric a sense of nostalgia from when he was human.

You know, it's funny. The old Taric seemed to me like he was probably a homosexual, but with the rework, I have to agree with you. Now, he just seems like he loves beauty in general, and doesn't really take gender or the like into account.

I suspect because it's a hammer-LIKE weapon that reads as distinct next to Poppy's weapon, and they have an interest in her being THE League hammer specialist... as for the shield, that's probably his whole BEING now; that and the crystals that form from the rune on his free hand when he shields/links allies. This also solidifies Braum's position as THE support shield bearer.

Oh, pick up that cute 5th Age skin BTW if you're interested in a more hammerish take on the weapon!
