"For the first round the community will be the judge, working in Woobox to pick their favorites."

I'm happy for everyone who won but having the community vote feels very manipulative still

Mistress Nyx5 votes

That's because it was. Traditional artists had ZERO chance in this contest. Everyone picks digital, which is easier to use and requires much less effort. My point is proven on the fact that not one of these is traditional. Plus I am sure most digital artists have a cult following so they probably were like, "Vote here so I can win!" Honestly, this was all about how many friends you had and if your art was just slightly better than the other high vote pieces. This honestly should have been separated into different categories. Since there were two Grand Prize, they should have had the other slot reserved for traditional, since they literally no chance here.

RedundantNameHer12 votes

you've obviously never done digital before to think that its suuuuuper easy lmfao.

Draclen5 votes

I mainly used this contest as an excuse to practice my digital art since I’m very new to it and it definitely was not easier than traditional drawing at all. I’ve been using Photoshop to draw digitally and spent hours trying to figure out how to best use the tools to make my piece. By the time I was out of time to work on it before having to turn it in, I still wasn’t satisfied with it. Not to mention that seeing my average at best entry next to a lot of quality pieces showed me how much I need to learn about the medium.

Papikana22 votes

Can you honestly look at these and say they don't deserve to win? These are beautiful submissions that respected every aspect of the rules and worked hard to have their art voted for. I don't understand the stereotype behind digital art saying it is "easier to use and requires much less effort." To do digital artwork, you must still know how to sketch, outline, use shading, proportions, etc. You can't just pick up a tablet and be a professional artist. Just because it's a different medium does not mean it's easier. Calling out artists that use digital tools is kind of rude. Their art is just as valid as someone else's, whether that is traditional, digital, a sketch, painting, or anything else. Also, I managed to get in the top 30 by sketching out my drawing on paper more than once, uploading it to my computer once I was satisfied with my traditional piece, outlining it and coloring it digitally. This took around a week and was by no means easy. Please respect all art types and not just was you deem valid.

Yeah, I did my sketches on paper first as well. I can understand feeling frustrated at the voting system, but I don't think we should be using that as an opportunity to take down other artists and their medium of choice. The intention of my original post wasn't to incite malice towards the winners - I think everyone did a great job... well, everyone whose piece I can actually see without having to dig through Woobox, ha ha!

The Garen one is pretty bad IMO

FaeSorceressLulu37 votes

Particularly a community vote not tied to players' accounts (so someone could easily spam votes through randomly generated IP addresses) that didn't let participants delete their duplicate posts (potentially splitting their votes across duplicates and hurting their chances of winning)... which Rioters encouraged them to do if they were unsure about their entry... which a lot of people were because the submission system was so confusing (lack of clarity if entry was disqualified if Summoner Name wasn't visible in thumbnail, link provided after entering didn't lead anywhere until after submissions ended, etc.).

[zombie-brand-clap]

butthole soup21 votes

yeah woobox was... pretty bad I had major fucking anxiety and I searched through the pages THREE TIMES COMPLETELY and only saw my other submission on the fourth and I saw a ton of duplicate posts which were sadly fantastic and I think deserved a mention as well I worked hard on mine and I'm proud of them honestly i'm going to turn them into pins at this point since this turned out fruitless but still next time I really hope this is organized better

butthole soup5 votes

also pls do post your submission i'd love to see yours

You just sound bitter you didn't win. Fix your attitude and be happy for your fellow artists. I think Riot is bright enough to look over their own system of voting. Which I'm not mistaken the community vote was consideration and not final, as Rioters themselves had the final say. And if you're really trying to use the "rigged vote" argument than all of of the popular artists that entered would have placed.

FaeSorceressLulu11 votes

If I'm bitter about anything, it was the inability to delete duplicate posts. I know for a fact my votes were split because I had friends that would say they found my entry on Woobox and they'd send me one of two different links, meaning their votes were getting split. Honestly, though, I don't think that would've changed the outcome, and I didn't participate to win nor did I expect to. Honorable mention was already more than I expected to get. I'm both happy for the winners and flattered to have gotten an honorable mention, but I also think the voting system was a bit flawed - I can think both.

The Sunbreaker 14 votes

Well Riot used to only vote themselves but everyone was mad and said the community should vote. Now the community should vote and nobody wants to the community to vote. Lets all face it, no matter what Riot does someone will complain. We're all different humans with different opinions, blah blah, they'll never get it right for everyone.

FaeSorceressLulu22 votes

Is it really a "community vote" if anyone from anywhere regardless of whether they play can vote, the votes aren't tied to user's accounts, and the system is easily exploited by anyone with a random IP address generator?

TheUrbanKitsune21 votes

Yeah I can't help but feel like this was just thrown together... The Woobox voting system felt lazy and cluttered, and it took me forever just to find one of my entries in the mess. I didn't think by any stretch I'd actually win because there were a lot of amazing and well-done entries, but it was REEEEALLLLY disheartening to feel like mine was just lost in the sea of art y'know? I've always hated 'community voting' type contests, but this sorta felt like a slap in the face. If Riot does something like this again in the future i sincerely hope they find a better platform or system.

Mistress Nyx10 votes

I agree, I am not skilled, but I saw a a lot of VERY good artists that were totally ignored. They had one piece... and it was literally the Mona Lisa... no one saw it, no one voted. Community voted events are always based on how many friends you have.

Papikana7 votes

I made it to honorable mentions out of 4k people and I don't have any follower base and I have 2 friends. You can't assume everyone won because they used social media.

RobotoMojo54 votes

you should've just named the contest "Who can draw the Angriest Face"

SniperShiva1 votes

Angry faces are easier for the League community to relate to obviously. It's pure salt :p

The Birch4 votes

I mostly voted for non-aggressive emotes personally, but I see your point.

Comfy Sofa50 votes

4 out of 5 were angry/raging expressions, so much for diversity there ¯_(ツ)_/¯ . I don't know maybe I'm a bit salty since this contest was so unorganized.

Harvey Rabbit14 votes

You're not salty this whole thing has been bullshit. Did community votes even matter in any way? It sounds like they didn't...

Kompi38 votes

This was alright , But I really expected to see more variety. Like I thought it was going to be more organized and see more expressions as the winners not just a bunch of angry faces.

Kringlas27 votes

Honorable mention, awesome!! I just noticed though that all of the winners (except the Bard) were angry faces..Kind of odd.

SpecterVonBaren12 votes

I think you mean, disappointing.

Équinøxe5 votes

it is disappointing.

Harvey Rabbit19 votes

It's a serious wtf, especially when you consider the contest was to depict intense emotions and uncomplicated rage is probably the EASIEST emotion to depict visually and the least interesting one.

Mangled Puppets22 votes

Why are they all the pretty much slight alterations of the same expression? Very disappointed in the lack of diverse emotions.

Velasan18 votes

IMO the Nidalee one is best. Funny though that all the winning emotes are over the top expressions. There is no emote for a champion just looking smug. Those ones are fun.

ScruffytheTurtle21 votes

Wish they'd show the honorable mentions because there were some really good ones there. I managed to get in with a smug draven!

The contest was literally to draw EXTREME expressions lmao

Is the point not that the emotes be expressive? You don't have to be going nuts with your mouth open yelling at someone to be expressive. Look at even the current emotes that exist. The one with Fiora is not over the top but it conveys the meaning nicely. Same with Santa Draven and Salutations Vel'koz where he is literally just waving.

One of the most popular emotes is the thumbs up and it doesn't have any face on it at all. Just a glove.

probably because it's free lmao

Community: "Humans have only one emotion: Edgy Rage."

Digital Artists always win... Traditional artists never had a chance...

Void Kaiju8 votes

Don't know why you got a downvote. Anybody who has looked at ANY community judged contest for ANYTHING knows this is true. I just wish riot had been open about it being community judged from the start. Feels kinda shitty to know that all the cool traditional entries probably didn't even get considered.

Mistress Nyx6 votes

I got downvoted because of digital artists... they know it's true... especially for video game related contests. I do digital art. It's quite literally just drawing a few lines and editing them to make an outline, then you color, easy blending, because it's all computer based clean blending and then you shade which is also hella easy. I DO this all the time. This is just proof...

MenoOG16 votes

you better have some master level digital art to be talking all this shit, you know how disrespectful you're being to all digital artist right now? saying it's easy, no medium is "hard" and I've used oil, watercolor, digital, pencil and charcoal, the subject and fundamentals of art are what make things difficult and if you honestly think otherwise then you don't understand, and it's that simple. Most traditional artists draw some simple ass ugly sketch and expect to beat out more skilled artist who happened to use digital as their medium, I know some people who could destroy these entries in traditional the truth is most peoples traditional art isn't as good as they think it is, Traditional has an IRL charm that can be easily beat by skilled digital artist.

CarameI Frappe15 votes

Why are all the winners expressing anger??? They’re great and all but I was hoping to see other submissions showing different emotions ...

Cyrad13 votes

Sad mine didn't even place, but good job everyone!

Can we see the honorable mention entries?

RiotA1RD0G5 votes

We are working on a gallery that will show off all the great entries that we received. Until then (hopefully next week sometime) you can still browse via https://woobox.com/f4sis9

The Sunbreaker 5 votes

You're only showing the honorable mentions right? We already looked through all of the art but we want to see the pictures that made it into honorable mentions.

You can if you remove the period at the end of that link.

Good catch. I fixed the link.

Wasn't really a fan of Woobox. I don't think the average viewer would browse through 30+ pages of randomly picked entries. Vote refreshing was weird (not gonna tweet every 8 hours asking for new votes), there were lots of repeated images, and participants being unable to update/replace entries was just strange. The whole system seemed all rather wonky to me.

I remember really liking both the entries that won, particularly Poppy :D The Nida entry was also fantastic to me! Bit sad my entry couldn't get anything but still had lots of fun. Congrats to everyone that got honorable mentions and the winners! [sg-poppy] YORDLE VICTORY

Faeowynne12 votes

In the future, I would suggest that the duplicate entries, traces, memes, and entries that don't meet criteria are removed before voting begins. That way, we won't have quite the overwhelming number of entries to vote on! Also woobox isn't the best - it'd be better to have more pics per page. Other than that, Thank you guys <3

FaeSorceressLulu5 votes

Also maybe using a voting system tied to users' accounts instead of one that can be easily gamed by a random IP address generator.
